The release date for Alchemy of Souls season 2 (part 2) has finally been confirmed alongside a brand new teaser trailer.
The Summer Korean drama slate had been dominated by Extraordinary Attorney Woo, but the extended broadcast of Alchemy of Souls saw the series rise through the ranks to become one of the most popular series of the past few months.
The hit series saw rather extraordinary success both with domestic audiences in South Korea and internationally, with season 1 (part 1) having reached its conclusion on August 28.
The good news is that the release date for Alchemy of Souls season 2 has finally been confirmed alongside a brand new teaser trailer.
Alchemy of Souls’ conclusion was a stop-start affair
In August 2022, with just two weeks of Alchemy of Souls’ domestic release left, the series decided to take a surprise break ahead of the penultimate broadcast.
The reason, according to a statement from the production team via Soompi, was “to enhance the level of completion for the second half.”
Thankfully, the hit K-drama returned for its 17th episode on August 20, with episode 18 arriving the next day, August 21.
The series then concluded its first season/part with back-to-back episodes on Saturday, August 27, and Sunday, August 28.
Alchemy of Souls season 2 release date confirmed
The tvN Twitter account has just uploaded a brand new teaser trailer for Alchemy of Souls season 2 alongside confirmation that the series’ second part will begin its domestic broadcast on December 10.
The post also confirmed that a three-year timeskip has occurred between season 1 episode 20 and episode 21:
“Jang-wook, who returned from the end of death (Ft. Blackening Completed) And three years later, the story of the magicians unfolds anew.” – Alchemy of Souls season 2, via tvN Twitter.
Back on June 14, four days before the series premiered, Naver News reported that Alchemy of Souls would be broadcast over two parts – season 1 with 20 episodes and season 2 with 10 episodes.
Director Park Joon-hwa was cited as saying “When writing the script for the first time, there are various stories, the narrative is interesting, and there are sharp conflicts and various stories about relationships and stories about each family. I didn’t have time to do fun with the tiki-taka.”
“There are so many changes and variations in our narrative, so I thought I wanted to put a human story in it. I’m still writing the script for part 2, but it’s in progress. A story that can be contained. It was more difficult than I thought to put the narrative and relationship story in 20 parts, so I made the decision early on.” – Park Joon-hwa, via Naver News.
Naver News then shared a follow-up report that confirmed season 2 would “be broadcast next December” i.e., December 2022
“[Alchemy of Souls] is divided into Part 1 and Part 2 to be broadcast. Part 1 first aired on June 18, and ends with episode 20 on the 28th. Part 2 will be aired in the second half of the year. A total of 10 episodes are planned.” – Naver News.
Filming for the second half of the Alchemy of Souls K-drama reportedly started in early July, with the most recent Naver News breakdown reporting that “all filming is scheduled to end this fall.”
How has the K-drama been rated so far?
Alchemy of Souls has had an exceptional response from fans both in South Korea and around the world.
Domestically, the series has ranked as the most-watched show in its programming block (both nationwide and in Seoul) for its entire broadcast, peaking with episode 20’s outstanding 2.410 million viewership.
Internationally, the K-drama has also been met with solid scores on various user-based feedback websites. These include a score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, 8.7/10 on IMDB, 9/10 on MyDramaList, and 91% on AsianWiki.
“Reminiscent of the k-drama Crash Landing on You, in that it’s a love story with charming and very competent actors. I’m sure I’m missing some relevant cultural context, but I find this series, through the first eight available episodes, thoroughly enjoyable, a needed escape. Accolades to the director who allows the actors to showcase both their individual charisma, and their chemistry with each other as they glide seemingly effortlessly through this light hearted escape.” – IMDB.
