All Hail Garlic Jr The Only Dragon Ball Villain To Win – Dragon Ball is a Japanese media franchise created in 1984 by Akira Toriyama. The early manga, written and illustrated by Toriyama, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 to 1995, with 519 individual chapters collected into 42 tankobon volumes by its publisher, Shueisha.

Dragon Ball was originally inspired by the 16th-century classical Chinese novel Journey to the West, which incorporated elements from Hong Kong martial arts films.

The series follows the adventures of protagonist Son Goku from childhood to adulthood as he trains in martial arts. He spends his childhood away from civilization until he meets a teenage girl named Bulma, who encourages him to join her in exploring the world in search of seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls. which when gathered summons a wish-granting dragon.

Along his journey, Goku makes many other friends, becomes a family man, discovers his alien heritage, and battles various Villains, many of whom also seek the Dragon Balls. 

Toriyama’s manga was adapted and split into two anime series produced by Toei Animation: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, which aired simultaneously in Japan from 1986 to 1996. The studio has also developed 21 animated feature films and three television specials, including two anime sequel series titled Dragon Ball GT (1996–1997) and Dragon Ball Super (2015–2018).

From 2009 to 2015, a revised version of Dragon Ball Z aired in Japan under the title Dragon Ball Kai, which more faithfully followed the manga’s storyline by removing most of the material featured in the anime.

Several companies have developed a variety of merchandising based on a series of large media franchises that include films, animated and live-action, collectible trading card games, numerous action figures, numerous collections of soundtracks, and numerous video games. Dragon Ball has become the highest-grossing media franchise of all time.

There is one Villain in particular that is conspicuously absent from almost any and all discussions of Dragon Ball’s greatest Villains, a Villain who – despite being associated with Dragon Ball Z’s most infamous story arc – has nevertheless stood the test of time. But it comes true—the only Dragon Ball Villain ever to actually shy away from everything they wanted to. 

I’m talking about Garlic Jr, the Villain of the 1989 anime film Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone and the titular antagonist of Dragon Ball Z’s 10-episode Garlic Jr. Saga arc.

Even if you’re a diehard Dragon Ball fan, it’s entirely possible you have no idea who this weird blue dude is, so here’s some background for those unaware: Garlic Jr. Appeared in 1989’s Dragon Ball Z. Dead Zone, the first Dragon Ball movie is apparently set within the continuity of the Dragon Ball Z anime.

Garlic Jr is introduced as the son of Garlick, an evil entity who assumed the role of Guardian of Earth 300 years ago. After being rejected for the role by the previous Guardian, who sensed Garlic’s desire to subdue the planet, Garlic amasses an army of demons and storms the Lookout to take the position by force.

Garlic and his followers are defeated and subsequently sent to the “Dead Zone”, a void-like prison dimension housed inside a dodecahedron-shaped crystal. Crystal eventually comes into possession of Garlic Jr, Garlic’s demon egg and apparent reincarnation, who then swears to release his father and exact revenge on Earth.

During the film, Garlic Jr and his followers manage to collect all seven Dragon Balls, releasing the eternal dragon Shenron, who then grants Garlic Jr. his wish for immortality.

Close to killing Kami, the then Guardian of Earth, Garlic Jr. is later attacked by Goku and Piccolo, who put aside their grudges against each other in order to defeat him.

In retaliation, Garlick Jr opens a portal to the Dead Zone, hoping to imprison both his enemies and himself in a desperate bid for a Pyrrhic victory. That is, until Gohan, seeing his friends and family in trouble, becomes enraged, unleashes his latent Saiyan abilities, and promptly transports Garlic Jr. to the Dead Zone.

Garlic Jr. is not seen again until the events of The Garlic Jr. Saga, a 10-episode arc that takes place between the Frieza arc and the aftermath of the Trunks Saga.

Garlic Jr. is the first of only a few original characters from the Dragon Ball spinoff film to later appear in the anime series, 27 years prior to Super Saiyan Broly’s formal introduction into Dragon Ball Super’s canon.

The arc opens with Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, and the rest of the so-called “Z Fighters” returning to their lives on Earth after their battle against Frieza.

Goku, having narrowly escaped Namek after Frieza’s defeat, is training on a distant planet to learn instant transmission techniques; Meanwhile, Vegeta sets off searching the universe for Goku so that he too can learn to be a Super Saiyan.

The central premise of the Garlic Jr. saga can be summed up as: “How would the Z Fighters do if Earth was under attack and Goku and Vegeta were nowhere to be found?” Answer: Not well!

Using the power of a destructive celestial object known as the Makyo Star, Garlick Jr. is able to escape the Dead Zone and leads a group of followers known as the “Spice Boys” to attack Kami’s lookout.

After defeating Kami in battle and imprisoning him in a sphere, Garlick Jr. uses an artifact containing Black Water Mist, a magical element capable of summoning the evil in people’s hearts and turning them into mindless soldiers, which spreads over the surface of the earth.

With the exception of Gohan and Krillin, most of the Z Fighters turn into mindless warriors thanks to Garlic Jr. Next, the pair advance against Garlick Jr.’s Spice Boy warriors at Kami’s Lookout, which they join. Piccolo, reveals that he is in fact immune to the mist’s effects.

The battle is a difficult one, as Garlic Jr. is still technically immortal and the power of the nearby Makyo Star only continues to increase his power. Within striking distance of victory, Garlick Jr. proceeds to use the star’s power to open a portal to the Dead Zone once again, destroying Earth and releasing his father.

All hope seems lost – that is, until Gohan devises a way to destroy the Makoyo Star and once again devour Garlic Jr. back in the dead zone, this time feeling good.

Given its status as an anime-exclusive, non-canonical “filler” arc of Dragon Ball Z, its overworld story spread over 10 episodes, and its deus ex machina plot contrivances but it is highly dependent. and the previously mentioned absence of series protagonists Goku and Vegeta, the Garlic Jr. Saga has an infamous reputation among fans of the franchise.

That said, Garlic Jr. still remains one of the only Dragon Ball Villains to have actually come close to killing the Z Fighters, and even then, he’s still the only one capable of conquering and subsequently destroying Earth. comes closer to doing and achieving its goal. The ultimate goal is to free his father while becoming immortal in the process.

And it turns out that to accomplish these feats, Goku and Vegeta needed him to coincidentally go on a faraway vacation. While this doesn’t speak too much about the competence of the superheroic martial artists known as “Earth’s Special Forces”, it certainly says a lot about Garlick Jr.’s impeccable sense of timing.
