Arati Saha or Arati Gupta’ Saha was an Indian Bengali long-distance swimmer, who was best known for becoming the 1st Asian woman to swim across the English Channel on 29 September 1959.

Arati had established herself in swimming at age 4 after her talent was spotted by Sachin Nag (An Indian freestyle Swimmer at the 1948 Summer Olympics), and Saha was later inspired by the Indian swimmer Mihir Sen to try to cross the English Channel.

Arati Saha Death (Cause of Death)

On 4 August 1994, Arati was admitted to a private nursing home in Kolkata with jaundice (icterus) and encephalitis (Inflammation of the Brain), and she died as a result of the illness after 19 days. She died on 23 August 1994 just a month before turning 54.

In 1946, at the age of 5, Arati won the gold medal in 110 yards freestyle at the Shailendra Memorial Swimming Competition, and it was the beginning of her swimming career.

Between 1945 to 1951, Arati won 22 state-level competitions in West Bengal, India. Her main events were 100-meter freestyle, 200 meters breaststroke, and 300 meters breaststroke.

On 29 September 1959, Arati Started from Cape Gris Nez, France, she swam for 16 hours and 20 minutes, battling tough waves, and covered 42 miles to reach Sandgate, England. On reaching the coast of Sandgate, England, Arati hoisted the Indian flag.
