Barcelona’s 2015 Champions League-winning side

FC Barcelona are one of the biggest clubs in all of sport, yet it has incredibly been seven years since their last triumph in the UEFA Champions League.
With the La Liga giants this year crashing out of the UEFA Europa League, Barcelona are a shadow of their former selves, with Xavi Hernandez, who played his last ever game for the club in the 2015 final in Berlin, eager to bring his former side back from the brink.
Whilst the ex-Spanish international is slowly making progress, it will take some time before Barcelona are back to the level they were at in 2015, with their squad that day one of the club’s best in recent history.
Many names from that famed XI have moved on for greener pastures, and so today, we take a look at the Barcelona squad that lifted the Champions League in Germany seven years ago, and where they are now.
GK – Marc-Andre Ter Stegen
Current club: FC Barcelona
The first of five players to still be at Barcelona, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been a key player for the Catalan side ever since arriving from Germany in 2014, and the keeper still remains the club’s no. 1 shot-stopper.
The 29-year-old’s overall form has dipped in recent seasons, but Ter Stegen is still a vital member of Xavi’s side who is about to hit the prime of his career, with the keeper no doubt eager to win the Champions League again for Barcelona.
RB – Dani Alves
Current club: FC Barcelona
One of the greatest defenders to ever play the game and quite literally the most decorated player in football history, Dani Alves re-joined Barcelona this January at the age of 38 despite looking like his days in Europe were over.
However, after a turbulent falling out with Brazilian side Sao Paulo, Alves is back in Catalonia with Barcelona, and what is more, the right-back is still performing well under his former teammate Xavi, with his presence both on and off the pitch huge for the club.
CB – Gerard Pique
Current club: FC Barcelona
Another veteran defender still making an impact at Barcelona, Gerard Pique is in the final years of his career with his boyhood club, yet the defender will easily go down in Barca history as one of their finest centre-backs.
A member of both the 2015 and 2011 Champions League-winning sides, the Spanish international is intertwined with Barcelona’s most successful clubs, and the 35-year-old defender will leave a huge void with the La Liga titans once he calls time on his career.
CB – Javier Mascherano
Current club: Retired
The only player on this list to hang up their boots, Javier Mascherano was a unit at the back for both Barcelona and Argentina during this period of his career, with the former Liverpool icon a star in the 2015 Champions League and 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Hanging up his boots in 2020, Mascherano left Barcelona in 2018 for a move to China before returning to his homeland of Argentina to play for Estudiantes, where the defender would play one more season before retiring from football with an incredible career to recall.
LB – Jordi Alba
Current club: FC Barcelona
Just like Alves, Jordi Alba has enjoyed an incredible career with Barcelona and still remains one of the top fullbacks in La Liga, with the defender impressing against Juventus in the 2015 Champions League final.
Still only 33, Alba could remain Barcelona’s starting left-back for a few more seasons to come, with the club in seemingly no rush to replace the former Valencia star this summer if reports are to be believed.
CM – Ivan Rakitic
Current club: Sevilla
Finally, a player who is still actively playing and not employed by Barcelona. Ivan Rakitic was signed in 2014 from Sevilla as a replacement for Xavi, and with the midfielder scoring just four minutes into the Champions League final against Juventus, it’s safe to say that the Croatian international lived up to the title.
Now back at Sevilla after six mixed seasons with Barcelona, the 34-year-old midfielder is continuing to impress in La Liga, with Rakitic playing a key role in the club’s Champions League qualification push for this season.
CM – Sergio Busquets
Current club: FC Barcelona
From the metronome in arguably Barcelona’s best-ever midfield to now captain of the club, Sergio Busquets is the fifth and final member of this XI who still remains in Catalonia, with the 33-year-old a regular under Xavi as well with the Spanish national team.
One of Barcelona’s most decorated players and a true legend of the club, Busquets will be hopeful of putting his lifelong team back to the top of European football under Xavi, who could be back in the Champions League next season.
CM – Andres Iniesta
Current club: Vissel Kobe
Arguably the best midfielder to play football this century and potentially of all time, Andres Iniesta was at the peak of his powers when Barcelona faced Juventus in Berlin, and the former Spanish international is still playing to this day.
Moving to Japan in 2018 to join J-League side Vissel Kobe, Iniesta has no plans to retire just yet from football with his 38th birthday coming up in May, and for this Barcelona team, the midfielder was at his best for Luis Enrique’s side.
RW – Lionel Messi
Current club: PSG
If there’s one thing fans remember most about this Barcelona side, it’s just how ridiculous the front three was, with Lionel Messi the star playing in an attacking trio of Luis Suarez and Neymar.
The undisputed greatest player to ever represent Barcelona and arguably the best of all time, Messi was in otherworldly form this season for the Catalan side, with the Argentine hitting an astonishing 58 goals in all competitions in their treble-winning season.
ST – Luis Suarez
Current club: Atletico Madrid
At the height of his powers, Suarez was arguably the best striker in world football, and the now reported £160,000-a-week Aston Villa target was influential in Barcelona’s Champions League win over Juventus.
Scoring the second goal of the match, the Uruguay international was the perfect attacking teammate for the likes of Messi and Neymar, with Suarez linking up with the trio in flawless harmony and causing havoc for any side that came in his way.
LW – Neymar
Current club: PSG
The youngest member of the MSN partnership and another scorer in the final, Neymar had the hallmarks of becoming a Barcelona legend, before PSG did the unthinkable and signed the Brazilian for a world-record transfer fee which still stands to this day.
Whilst the winger is yet to win the Champions League in Paris, Neymar has been key to PSG’s quest for global domination and increasing their profile in the world of sport, as well as winning domestic trophies.
