He is of American descent and follows the Catholic faith. Clarence completed his elementary and secondary education at St. Pius X High School and later at St. John Vianney’s Minor Seminary on the Isle of Hope.

Clarence claims to have dropped out of the seminary after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. He heard another student say after the shooting, “Fine, I hope the son of a bitch dies,” and thought the church wasn’t doing enough to combat racism. After that, he studied at Missouri’s Conception Seminary College. At the suggestion of a nun, he enrolled as a sophomore transfer student at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts.

When he was a student there, he was important in the formation of the Black Student Union. When several black students were punished for violating school rules, he and other students walked out of class to protest the disparity. A group of priests allowed black students to return to the institution. While in college, he participated in anti-war demonstrations and was a first-hand witness to the Harvard Square riots in 1970. This is attributed to his disillusionment with communist causes and his subsequent shift to conservatism.
