The beginnings
Carr was born in Bakersfield, California. He was Rodger and Sheryl Carr’s third and last child. Before 2002, he and his family lived in Bakersfield. They moved to Sugar Land, Texas, when his oldest brother, David Carr, was picked first overall in the NFL draft by the Houston Texans, who were just starting up. For Carr’s senior year, he and his family moved back to Bakersfield, where he went to Bakersfield Christian High School.
Carr played football for the first time in high school at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas. As a freshman, he played on the freshman team. As a sophomore, he moved up to the varsity team and became the backup quarterback. He didn’t train to be the starting quarterback, but when another quarterback got hurt in preseason, he was forced into the role.
Carr got better as a Clements High School Rangers starter over time. As a sophomore, he threw for 1,246 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a junior, he threw for 1,622 yards and 16 touchdowns. As a junior, Carr led his team to a 13–0 season that included the playoffs. They lost in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Class 5A Division 2 State playoffs in Region 3 to the Katy High School Tigers, who were also undefeated and would go on to win the championship. During his junior year, Carr also got a lot of attention from teams. He could have gone to Fresno State, SMU, Boise State, the University of Southern California, UCLA, or Utah. Fresno State, SMU, and Utah were the only ones to offer Carr a scholarship. In the end, he told Fresno State over the phone on May 25, 2008, the last day of his junior year. In 2008, Doug Barnett, the athletic director at Bakersfield Christian High School and a former NFL player, confirmed that Carr would transfer there. At the time, there were rumors that he would have gone to Stockdale High School or Bakersfield High School, both of which have good football programs.
As a senior, Carr led the Eagles football team to a 12–1 record and the California Interscholastic Federation Central Section Division V championship. The only loss came in the season opener at home against Oaks Christian High School, a national football powerhouse. ESPN RISE named Carr the National Football Player of the Week on October 29, 2008, after he passed for 441 yards and three touchdowns in a game against Tehachapi High School five days earlier. Carr would later set a Central Section record by throwing 544 yards in a win against Arvin High School on November 7, 2008. The Bakersfield Californian also chose Carr as the 2008 All-Area Football Player of the Year. Carr also set a new school record when he threw six touchdown passes and ran for two more in a home blowout win over a small school. After his high school football career was over, the National Private Schools Athletic Association named Carr the National Player of the Year in 2009.
Going to college
Carr went to Fresno State as an early-entry freshman in the spring of 2009 so he could play spring football with the Bulldogs. His brother David also played quarterback at Fresno State. Fresno State’s coach at the time, Pat Hill, said that true freshman Carr was “in the mix” for the starting quarterback job as late as the middle of July. But a few days before the September 2009 season started, Hill said that junior Ryan Colburn would start instead of Carr. Carr played in five games as a freshman, but he didn’t do much in those games.
Colburn was still the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs in 2010. After sitting out the 2010 season as a redshirt, Carr took over as the starting quarterback for Fresno State in the fall of 2011.
The year 2011
Carr earned the right to start for the Bulldogs in 2011, when they went 4–9. He started for the first time in the Bulldogs’ season-opening loss to California. [18] Three weeks later, Carr had a breakout game against Idaho with 371 passing yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. Six games later, on November 12 in a loss to New Mexico State, he had a season-high 391 passing yards and three touchdowns. The year 2012
Carr had a new head coach for the new season. Tim DeRuyter took over for the fired Pat Hill. Carr helped the Bulldogs get better, and they went 9–4 in 2012. Davante Adams was coming off a redshirt when the season started, and he was an easy target for Carr right away.
After splitting the first two games of the season, Carr had a career game in a 52–40 win over San Diego State two weeks later. He threw for 536 yards, which tied the school record. He scored five touchdowns and threw two interceptions. On Oct. 27. He had 416 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception in a 49–32 win on the road against New Mexico. In the Bulldogs’ last game of the season, a 48–15 win over Air Force, he threw for 452 yards and four touchdowns. He threw for 4,104 yards, 37 touchdowns, and seven picks during the 2012 season. He was named the MWC Offensive Player of the Year for the 2012 season. Like the year before, he led the Mountain West Conference in many passing categories.

In 2013, Carr helped the Bulldogs get an 11–2 record. The Bulldogs’ 11 wins were their most since 2001.
In the first game of the season, Rutgers beat the team 52–51. Carr completed 52 of 73 passes for 456 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. Carr’s pass attempts and completions in the game set new school and conference records. After beating Cal Poly in the next game, Carr led the Bulldogs to a win over Boise State by throwing for 460 yards and four touchdowns. The Bulldogs are now 3-0. After beating Hawaii in the fourth game, Carr won two games in a row with over 400 passing yards. During that time, he had a five-touchdown game against Idaho and a four-touchdown game against UNLV. The Bulldogs went from 0–0 to 7–0 after beating San Diego State on October 26. The month of November was the start of some good games for Carr in terms of statistics. On November 2, in a win over Nevada, he threw for 487 yards and scored three touchdowns. The next week, in a win over Wyoming, he threw for 360 yards and four touchdowns. Two weeks later, in a win over New Mexico, he threw for 522 yards and seven touchdowns. This made the Bulldogs’ record 10–0. During that time, the Bulldogs got as high as number 15 in the AP Poll, which was their best since 2001. On November 29, Carr threw for 519 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception as the Bulldogs lost their first game to San Jose State 62–52 in a high-scoring game. Fresno State made it to the Mountain West Conference Championship Game. Carr threw for 404 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions as Utah State lost 24–17. Fresno State won the conference outright for the first time with this win. He ended his college career with 217 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a 45–20 loss to USC in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Carr led the FBS in 2013 with 5,083 yards and 50 touchdowns. He was also one of the best passers in the conference in many other ways. He won the Sammy Baugh Trophy, which is given every year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus to the best college passer in the country. He finished eighth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy.
Carr got the 2013 CFPA Elite QB Award for how well he did at Fresno State over three seasons. He was the second CFPA winner from the school, after Phillip Thomas, who was also from Bakersfield.
He wore number 4 at Fresno State to honor Brett Favre, his favorite NFL player. Fresno State retired Carr’s number in 2017 during halftime of a game against Incarnate Word. Carr got a mural at his old college, Fresno State University, on July 14, 2019.
