*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Better Call Saul*

After six stellar seasons, Better Call Saul has come to an end following a masterful finale that wrapped up the story of Jimmy McGill, aka. Saul Goodman.

As always, the finale gave fans plenty to ponder and left many viewers with more questions than answers.

The fate of Saul Goodman was understandably a hot topic of debate prior to the finale but what happens to the shady lawyer in the Better Call Saul finale, does he die?

Does Saul Goodman die in Better Call Saul?

If we’re talking physically, then no, Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill ends Better Call Saul alive and well.

However, metaphorically speaking, Jimmy does put an end to the Saul Goodman alias that caused so much harm, meaning that you could argue Saul Goodman is indeed dead.

After several years on the run, hiding as Gene Takavic, Saul Goodman is finally arrested and charged with an endless list of crimes after helping to build Walter White’s criminal empire in Breaking Bad.

He faces a potential life-plus-190-year sentence but, Saul being Saul, he is able to cut a deal that would see him serve just seven years in prison.

However, during the eventual court case, Jimmy McGill takes the reigns and puts his Saul Goodman alias to one side. He confesses to playing a much bigger part in Heisenberg’s crimes than he first admitted to, resulting in him receiving an 86-year prison sentence.

Why did Jimmy abandon his deal?

Throughout the Better Call Saul finale, Jimmy reminisces about conversations he had with Mike, Walter, and his brother, Chuck.

In each instance, the subject of time machines is raised and what you might do if you had the chance to re-write the past.

For Jimmy, his first instinct when talking to Mike is to go back in time to invest in Berkshire Hathaway so that he would become a billionaire in the present.

Later, when asking Walter White the same question, Jimmy says that he would go back to a slip-and-fall scam that went wrong and permanently damaged his knee.

Both instances reveal that Jimmy would use his ability to change the past for selfish reasons.

But finally, in a flashback to a conversation with his late brother, Chuck asks Jimmy to consider taking a different path if he doesn’t like where his life is heading before picking up a copy of H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine.

What Jimmy comes to realise from these conversations, and especially Chuck, is that things have always gone wrong when he has leant into his Saul Goodman persona and that no good will come if he doesn’t accept the consequences of his actions.

Jimmy is also inspired by the actions of Kim, who admitted her part to play in Howard Hamlin’s downfall and death despite knowing that she could face serious consequences for doing so.

As a result, the Jimmy in the present finally puts Saul Goodman to rest and admits his part in building Walter White’s criminal empire and in the process, abandons his seven-year plea deal, with him eventually being handed an 86-year sentence instead.

In doing so, Jimmy is breaking the spiral of Saul Goodman-led destruction that saw Howard and Chuck both die, Kim leave him and end with him hiding in a dumpster in an attempt to escape from the police.
