Lyons was a member of a press team that covered the shooting death of Nathacha Augustin, 38, earlier that day from Pine Hills in Orange County on February 22, 2023.

The shooter from the earlier incident, Keith Melvin Moses, returned to the scene and shot Lyons and Spectrum 13 photographer Jesse Walden. He then went to a house nearby and shot a woman who has not been named and her daughter, T’Yonna Major, 9, as well.

Moses, a person Augustin knew, was subsequently detained by police. While the lady and Walden were seriously hurt but survived, Lyons and Major perished.

Police Statement

Later on Wednesday, police revealed that they had detained suspect Keith Melvin Moses, 19, who they claim knew the first victim but had no apparent ties to the other victims.

Authorities have not yet established a motive, and because Lyons and Walden’s vehicle was not obviously marked as a normal news van, it is unclear whether the shooter was aware that they were journalists.
