The exact cause of Elizabeth’s spinal injury has not been specified by officials. The California Surf Lifesaving Association, which promotes beach safety awareness, states that most spinal injuries occur when someone dives headfirst and hits the bottom. Such injuries can have severe lifelong consequences for the victim, as well as their loved ones and rescuers. Symptoms of a spinal injury can include paralysis, bruises, neck pain, difficulty breathing, weakness in the limbs, and numbness or tingling sensations.

Before the incident, Elizabeth Lovat excelled as a water polo player at Huntington Beach High School, earning recognition as an All-Wave League first-team selection during her senior year. She continued her athletic journey at Iona University, joining the women’s water polo team. Despite facing a shoulder injury that sidelined her during her sophomore year, she made a strong comeback as a junior, playing in multiple games and receiving All-Metro Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team honors for her academic achievements.

Elizabeth is set to begin her senior year in late August, pursuing a degree in speech pathology. She hails from a family with a strong aquatics background, as her brother John Lovat excelled in water polo and her sister Allison had a long-term lifeguarding career.
