Northwest Ohio was the scene of tragedy. Hayden Smith, a 16-year-old high school student, was killed in an automobile accident Thursday morning close to the remote town of Haviland.

The highway patrol claims that Smith suffered fatal injuries when he collided with a semi-truck at a stop sign intersection.

On November 30, just after 9:30 AM, an early-morning incident happened. While workers cleared significant debris from the tragic collision, the crossing at State Route 114 and County Road 87 was closed for more than four hours.

Hayden Smith failed to stop at the posted stop sign at the intersection while traveling south on CR 87 in a 1991 Ford pickup truck, according to investigating authorities.

Rather, Smith’s car proceeded through the junction and straight into the path of a 2017 Volvo semi-truck being driven by 51-year-old Gary Ballenger, who was transporting freight westward on Route 114. The teenager’s Ford pickup truck was struck by the semi-truck at a fast speed.

Hayden Smith was evacuated by first responders to a Fort Wayne hospital for immediate trauma care after the serious truck wreck hit.

By the time the Rossford High School student arrived at the Indiana medical institution, however, there was no saving him.

Shortly after the Fort Wayne attempt at lifesaving, Smith’s time of death was noted by the Allen County Coroner’s Office. Gary Ballenger, the unhurt semi-operator, was questioned and then cleared from the scene.

The tragic death of Hayden Smith, who was only 16 years old, has left the Rossford area inconsolable over the loss of a beloved community member. Smith, according to friends, lived life to the fullest and had big hopes for the future.
