LeAnn Mueller, one of the co-owners of la Barbecue, has sadly passed away unexpectedly this morning, June 14. According to her representatives, the press announcement conveyed that she passed away peacefully while being “surrounded by friends and family.”
While the specific cause of her death has not been disclosed, it is worth noting that Mueller had been traveling recently, having embarked on a trip to Los Angeles with trans artist Xavier Schipani, whose artwork graces the walls of la Barbecue.
LeAnn Mueller hailed from a Texas barbecue dynasty, being the granddaughter of Louie Mueller, a renowned figure in Taylor’s barbecue scene. Her father, Bobby Mueller, and brother, John Mueller, further cemented the family’s legacy in the realm of perfectly smoked meats.
Together with her wife, Ali Clem, LeAnn Mueller established la Barbecue as a humble food truck on South First Street in 2012, garnering attention through the long queues of customers eager to savor their exceptional barbecue offerings. In November 2021, they expanded their enterprise with a brick-and-mortar location at 2401 E. Cesar Chavez, where the loyal following persisted.
Mueller’s talents extended beyond the barbecue realm, as she gained recognition as a celebrated photographer. Her portfolio boasted portraits of notable figures such as Jay Z and Willie Nelson, gracing the covers of esteemed publications like Rolling Stone and Texas Monthly.
Although LeAnn Mueller achieved great success in both photography and barbecue, her career was not devoid of controversy. In 2012, she made headlines when she dismissed her brother John from their joint venture, JMueller BBQ, accusing him of embezzlement. This prompted a swift rebranding of the business, resulting in the birth of la Barbecue. (Tragically, John passed away in December 2021 at the age of 52.) Additionally, in August 2022, Mueller and Clem faced indictment for workers’ compensation fraud.
LeAnn Mueller was 51 years old at the time of her passing, and the details regarding her funeral arrangements are currently pending.
