How to Create a Group Chat on Kik

Kik is a social media messenger app that has been running for a few years now. It has amassed millions of users around the world with an estimated 40% of American teens registered and actively using the app. SMS is so last century, Kik is the new way to communicate!
Kik was initially designed as a better version of AOL Instant Messenger, and it grew from there. The design intent was to make Kik better looking, simpler to work with, and faster to use and communicate. There is also an element of privacy built into it, too, as you create a username rather than share your cellphone number. This works both for you and against you as anyone can use the app with the same anonymity.
Kik also has another trick up its sleeve. It is a mini internet within an app. Kik has its own apps, own web browser, own video and music player and other neat tricks. So you can listen to music while chatting, watch videos, look at memes, check out Reddit, play games, and more. All from within Kik.
How to sign up for Kik
To use Kik you will obviously have to download a copy of the app for your device and install it. Get it here for iPhone and here for Android. You can use it on a Windows desktop or a Mac, too, but that requires some pretty specialized software and is outside the scope of this article. Just focus on your mobile device for now.
Once it’s installed on your device, we can create an account and get started.
- Tap Register Account once Kik is installed.
- Fill in your details, add a profile picture, and create a username.
- Allow, or not, Kik to access your contacts on your device. It is completely up to you whether you allow this or not. You can always allow it later if you don’t want to at first.
- Tap Find People to locate friends or contacts. You will need their username to be able to find them, though.
- Confirm your email address to complete account creation. You will not be able to use your account until you do this.
Chatting and sharing with Kik
Chatting with friends or contacts is as simple as you would hope for a messaging app.
- Tap a contact and select Chat at the bottom of the screen.
- Enter your chat text into the window and tap Send. Depending on which version of the app you’re using, Send may appear as a button or a speech bubble.
- Add characters, emojis, and the usual messaging content in the usual way by selecting numbers, characters, or emojis from the keyboard icons on your device.
Sharing video and images on Kik
To share media, you will need to allow Kik to access your images and video. Kik won’t do anything aside from send the media you tell it to, but it is important to know that the app does have access to the media you create on your device.
To send a video or image:
- Tap the image or video above the message box.
- Add an image or video, or record a video.
- Add a message to go with it if you like.
- Tap Send or the speed bubble icon to send the media.
You can also send other content by tapping the little square icon to the right above the chat box. You can then send stickers, video links, Sketches, memes, and your web history.
How to find people on Kik
All social media apps depend on you having people to talk to in order to work. Kik is no different. When it was first released, it wasn’t exactly intuitive to find people, but it’s gotten a lot easier to understand since then.
You can search by username or phone contacts, or you can use a Kik code. The system will not search by real name, nickname, phone number, or email address. It will only search using Kik usernames. This is good for privacy, but it does make finding people slightly more difficult than it needs to be.
- Tap the big blue ‘+’ button in the bottom right of the front Kik screen.
- Choose Search by username, Start a group, Scan a Kik code or Discover bots.
- Enter your criteria depending on the choice you made.
As mentioned, Kik will only search by username. You either have to know it in advance or get it from your friends by normal SMS, email, or however you feel like getting the info from them.
Group chatting on Kik
One strong feature of Kik is the ability to group chat. You can gather up to 9 people at once into a group and chat, share media, or whatever else strikes your collective fancy.
- Tap the big blue ‘+’ button in the bottom right of the main Kik screen.
- Select Start a group.
- Give the group a name so it can be found.
- Add contacts to the group by entering their username.
- Start the chat.
You can also use the Kik code to add people to the group or use a group hashtag.
Talk to the bot
Another neat feature of Kik is the kikbot. This is a literal bot who can answer many basic questions about Kik and even hold a conversation with you should nobody you know be online.
- Tap the big blue ‘+’ button in the bottom right of the main Kik screen.
- Select Discover bots.
- Scroll through the results to find a bot you want to chat to.
- Tap the bot and select ‘Start chatting’ on the next page.
Bots are pretty good at holding a conversation but don’t do so well in group chats. Although there is no reason why you would want a bot in a group chat anyway, as you have real people to talk to. And even one-on-one, most bots aren’t going to pass the Turing Test and will start running into conversational hurdles, so maybe save the bots for a very slow day.
Kik is a pretty good messaging app that does a lot of things well. It is easy to use, it’s fast, it works with multiple media types, it offers a semblance of security, it functions as its own mini-browser, and it has those bots. On the downside, it is harder than it should be to find other users and requires you to share usernames by other means in order to connect. But even that downside is balance out by the privacy it allows you, and once you do connect with someone, it is easy to communicate entirely within Kik.

Tech is moving so fast, most people cannot keep up without tripping over themselves. First it was text messaging, then photo messaging, and now you can even have live video chats. With Kik video chat you can chat with your Kik friends as if you were right next to them.
How to Start Using Kik Video Chat
To start using Kik video chat, open the Kik app. Then in either one of your private one on one chats or within one of your Kik groups, go to the top right corner of the Kik Messenger screen and tap the Video Chat option to toggle it on. You will see a video chat bubble pop up when you start the video chat. Tap the video chat toggle button again to turn it off and leave the Kik video chat. Once you have video chat on, you cannot switch to another chat until you turn it off. If you want to chat in fullscreen you can swipe left.
Other Things to Know About Kik Video Chat
So if you’ve found some great people/groups through kik usernames, you have probably found some not so great people/groups as well. Sometimes people are obnoxious and you have to mute them. To mute people on video chat you can tap on the persons video chat bubble. Once you’ve muted someone you’ll see the mute icon. You can also mute yourself. This means that other poeple will not be able to hear you. So if you have loud noises going on in the background, it will not disturb your group chat.
So you’re chatting in a group – everyone’s responding, sending stickers and even the occasional GIF. The chat is blowing up your phone. Then you make a joke, and all of a sudden – silence.
What do you do? You can’t just double text the group…but you can mention a bot. You mention @roll .
Roll pops into your chat and immediately assigns everyone a number! Why did Austin get 41? Omg, Angie totally won with 99. The group laughs and you mention @roll again to ask “Who wants to date me me?” Roll says: “I’d say… @drewtellerxp” – you and your best friend type “lol.”
But then the chat dies again . This time, you mention @murdermysterybot .
Murder Mystery Game bot enters your chat and suddenly you’re all in Hartkill Manor with Master Dreadly. Who will be the Senator? Who will be the Doctor? Who will be murdered?! You’re on the edge of your seat as you play the game.
Turns out you’re the murderer 😱. Talk about buzzkill. RIP chat. Unless…
You KNOW someone in this group is still on Kik. You can just feel it. So you mention @whoslurking .
Whoslurking pops into your chat, ready to expose your friends. In 10 seconds, you find out that Angie’s still lurking. Angie’s like, “ 😂 snitch.”
Annnnddd the group’s dead again. At lunch, you mention @popchat to try your hand at group trivia. It’s lunch, so of course you choose the food category! Did you know you need THREE years of training to prepare pufferfish as a Japanese chef? Austin gets it right, but you guessed 10 – whoops. Drew and Angie jump in and also play trivia. To no one’s surprise, Austin wins.
School’s over, and the chat is…you guessed it, dead again. All that’s left to do is send photos of cats to @enhance .

Chat apps are one of the hottest things on the Internet these days – in 2016 more than 1.4 billion people used a chat app, making them the most popular type of mobile application. What many people don’t realize is that some of the “people” they’re chatting with online are actually automated programs, also known as bots. The popular chat app Kik created and deployed a Kik bot that people can chat with, but you can make your own bot too!
Why make a Kik bot? Well, the process isn’t difficult, it’s interesting, and creating a bot can teach you a little (or a lot) about how automation works. Kik has its own Bot Store so if you create a quality bot, you could get it placed in the store. Most bots are pretty low in quality, so if you have a good idea and implement it well, you could get a lot of attention for your bot. In addition, bots have a legitimate function providing some forms of online customer service, so developing a bot could be a useful resume item that could get you a programming job one day!
There are a couple of different approaches to building a bot on Kik. The Kik process requires you to know how to code (at least a bit) in either Python or Node.js. There are also standalone bot software platforms out there that let you configure a bot without knowing how to code.
Planning your Kik bot
Before jumping right into to developing your bot, you should spend some time planning. What do you want your bot to do? What do you want it to achieve? What is going to make it different from all the other bots out there? Consider all these questions before moving on to the build stage as having a clear goal in mind will help you maintain focus as you develop your bot. If you’re planning to build a bot just for fun, then these questions are less important – you can just start developing it and see what happens. It doesn’t matter if it has been done before because you’re doing it for yourself. If you’re planning to build a bot for others to use, then these questions are more important. If your bot does nothing new, why would anyone use it?
Some of the items you should plan ahead of time include:
- Thinking of a short, snappy name for your Kik bot.
- Picking a personality. Will it be sarcastic? Friendly? Aloof?
- Deciding on your target audience and subject matter. Is this a bot that talks sports with grownups? A bot that tells jokes to kids?
- Thinking about the kinds of conversations you want to have. Does the bot really analyze what the other person tells it, or is it very shallow?
- Considering how to redirect conversations that go off topic.
Initializing the bot
In order to start building a bot you will need the Kik app and you will need to sign up at the Kik developer site.
- Get the app from the app store (Apple or Google Play).
- You will then need to visit the Kik Dev website and register.
- Open the Kik app on your device and scan the Kik Code from the dev page.
- Wait for the Kik bot @Botsworth to send you a message and follow the wizard that’s linked in that message. You will need to enter a user ID, display name and profile image.
The bare bones of your bot have now been created, and it’s ready to be given some intelligence.
Option 1 – Build a bot using a programming language
Once you’ve completed the steps above, visit the Kik Getting Started page.
- Install your API library as directed, using either Python or Node.js depending on whether you want to code in Python or Java. The Kik manual is pretty helpful here, and shows you example bots to help you configure yours.
- Kik has their own Github page too if you need a little help.
- Program your bot using your language of choice.
- Test, test and test again. You should also invite friends to help you test it, since they will come up with ways to break your bot you wouldn’t have thought up on your own.
- When you’re happy, release the bot into the wild through the Kik bot store.
You may have noticed I glossed over the actual programming of the bot. Kik has created a great set of tutorials on how to do that.
Option 2 – Build a bot using ChatFlow
ChatFlow is just one of many API tools that makes bot creation simple by letting you use a graphical interface to build your bot, rather than using code.
- Follow the steps above under Initializing the bot to download the app and log into kik.com.
- Follow the instructions to create and name your bot using Botsworth.
- Select Configuration within the Kik.dev website and copy the bot name and API key.
- Create a ChatFlow application and create a flow beginning with kik-in and kik-out.
- Right click the kik-in node, select ‘Add new kikbot-controller’ and edit. Paste the bot name and API key and select Add.
- Right click kik-out, select the bot name and click OK.
- Select Deploy.
This creates a basic Kik bot. This bot will just echo back any message that you send it, but the bare bones of your bot have been created. From here you can develop more advanced messages and interactions for your bot until you are completely happy. The instructions within ChatFlow are very clear and logical so almost anyone can create a chat bot!
Summing up
Building a bot in Kik can be done either by programming or by using one of the bot starter platforms like ChatFlow. You can build a bot either way, but if you do it via programming you will learn more. Kik isn’t the only chat service that encourages the use of bots in their ecosystem, and bots are a growing Internet trend. Learning to code intelligent bots is a job with real potential.

Because Ragebot is so popular and trusted, nefarious people use this trust towards Rage to fool people.
One of the ways they do this is by making fake Ragebot accounts to get people to give them admin permissions in groups so they can purge/ruin the groups for their amusement.
You may have seen a few of these fake accounts throughout time.
Here we will explain what to look for when trying to figure out if the Rage you’re interacting with is the real or fake.
The username
All of the offical free Ragebots are listed on the status board that can be viewed here.
If the one you’re interacting with is not on this board, it means it is most likely a fake.
Premium Ragebots are not listed on the status board though.
If you’re unsure of how to check a Ragebots username from inside of a group, tap here.
Tap on the profile that you suspect of being a fake Ragebot, and tap “View profile”.
It should look like the screenshot below.
Tap on “Start chatting”, and it should open a chat with the Ragebot like the screenshot below.
Now you should be able to see the full username.
Check if the username is listed on Status – if it isn’t, it is most likely a fake Ragebot.
Offical Ragebots will never act on their own
Although a few commands work in PM, an offical Ragebot will never initiate PM with you first, and it will only PM you the times when it responds to your commands.
The times when it responds to you, it will usually be instant – like when you PM it “friend”, it’ll respond right away.
If you receive a PM from a Rage without having PM’ed it first, it means it is fake, especially if it’s asking for something from you or threatening you in some way.
Additionally, if it PM’s you saying that it is an “updated” version of Rage, perhaps with more features, then this is also not true.
All bots run on the same back-end system and they all get updated at the same time – there are no free Ragebots that are superior to other Ragebots.
Furthermore, offical Ragebots will never join a group by themselves – they can only be added to the group by someone else.
In the group chat you can see how it joined.
Premium Rage
Premium Ragebots are not listed on the status page, and their usernames can vary.
But just like normal Ragebots, they will never message you first, and they’ll never join your group chat by themselves.
There are a couple of other indicators you can use to check if a Premium Rage is legit – but the safest method by far is to PM @NyxieDK with the username, and she will check it for you.

Kik started out as a social messaging platform on which two people, strangers or friends, could communicate with one another. However, since then, the platform has grown to be a multimedia platform that you can use to talk with bots, groups, and even some companies that allow for social interactions. Kik also offers the function to join an existing group chat, or to make one yourself. Here are a few reasons why you should absolutely join or create a group chat!
Meet Like-Minded People
This may potentially be the biggest reason for joining a group chat. Group chats on Kik are divided per interest. So, when you are looking for a group chat, you will need to fill in a keyword in the search bar, like Overwatch. Then, you’ll receive results for various groups containing people who enjoy talking about Overwatch. It’s an ideal way to find like-minded people to chat with instead of having to search for them through hundreds of Kik Usernames .
Chat Whenever You Like
Sometimes you’ll find yourself awake at 2 a.m. in the morning with no one to talk to. However, when you’re in a group chat on Kik, there’s a big chance that there’s someone from another time zone online to chat with you. You can still send messages, memes, or ask a question, and there’ll be someone to answer them for you.
Do Activities Together
Sometimes, there’ll be a Kik group from a specific area in your country or province. For instance, many LGBT+ groups often host get-togethers to talk to others in real life and to support each other as well. When you join a group from your city, chances are that you will get to meet them in real life as well. There are plenty of Kik groups dedicated to befriending others. So, if you’re looking to make new friends, you can join a group and start chatting with other members.
