  • It’s easy to set up call forwarding on your iPhone so incoming calls are directed to a different phone.
  • The method you use to set up forwarding depends upon the your cellular carrier.
  • GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile let you set up forwarding in the Settings app.
  • CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon need you to dial a carrier code.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

If you plan to be in an area with poor cell phone coverage, or if you know that you won’t be using your phone for a while, you can forward calls that would ordinarily ring on your iPhone to another number.

It’s fairly easy to do — and equally easy to undo when you want to restore your phone to normal. But the specific process depends on the kind of cell phone carrier you have, since there are two fundamentally different cell phone technologies in use in the US today.

How to forward calls on an iPhone with AT&T, T-Mobile, or other GSM carriers

AT&T and T-Mobile are the most popular examples of a kind of network technology called GSM. So-called mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) like Cricket and Consumer Cellular use GSM as well, since, as “virtual” operators, they piggyback on a larger carrier — in this case, AT&T’s network. Similarly, Metro is a MVNO of T-Mobile, so it’s a GSM carrier as well.

All you really need to know about GSM, though, is that you can forward your iPhone’s number to another phone using the Settings app.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap “Phone.”

3. Tap “Call Forwarding.”

4. On the Call Forwarding page, turn the feature on by swiping the button to the right.

5. Tap “Forward To” and enter the phone number that you want to forward to.

6. Tap the arrow to go back to the previous screen.

You’re now set up to forward your incoming calls to the number you entered. When you’re done forwarding, return to the Call Forwarding page and turn the feature off.

How to forward calls on an iPhone with Verizon, Sprint, and other CDMA carriers

Carriers like Sprint and Verizon use older CDMA technology for their network, and networks like Boost Mobile and Jitterbug are CDMA-based MVNOs of those larger carriers. If you have a phone on a CDMA carrier, you can’t simply turn on forwarding in Settings like you can with a GSM phone. Even so, it’s not very difficult; you just need to dial a carrier-specific carrier code in the Phone app.

To enable call forwarding, you obviously need to know the proper carrier code. If in doubt, you can find it on the carrier’s website or by calling customer service. That said, the most common CDMA carriers — Verizon, Sprint, and Boost Mobile — all use the same code. To forward your calls:

1. Open the Phone app and tap the keypad button at the bottom of the screen.

2. Dial *72 followed by the 10-digit number you want to forward to. For example: *722125551212

3. Tap the dial button.

Later, if you want to stop call forwarding, you need to enter another carrier code, and this one can vary by carrier as well. Here are the most common ones:

  • Sprint: *720
  • Verizon: *73
  • Boost Mobile: *720

How to forward calls on your iphone

You’d think call forwarding would be an easy thing to set up on your iPhone. While it isn’t really complicated, how you enable it depends on whether your phone provider uses the GSM or CDMA standard.

If you use a GSM network, like AT&T or T-Mobile, you can do it right from your phone settings. If it’s CDMA, like Verizon or Sprint, you’ll need to type carrier codes on your phone’s keypad. There are some cool things you can do with carrier codes, like accessing your iPhone’s hidden field test mode, but their original use actually was to activate extra phone features like call forwarding.

Here’s how to enable call forwarding, no matter which network you use.

AT&T, T-Mobile, and Other GSM Carriers: Use the iPhone’s Built-In Option

If you have service with AT&T, T-Mobile, or other GSM carriers, you’ll have access to call forwarding right in the iOS interface. To access it, fire up your Settings app and tap “Phone.”

How to forward calls on your iphone

On the Phone screen, tap “Call Forwarding.”

Next, tap the “Call Forwarding” option to turn it on.

How to forward calls on your iphone

Type in the number to which you want to forward calls received by your iPhone. Your phone doesn’t give you any indication to let you know it’s saved the number, but it has. Just tap to go back to the Call Forwarding screen.

How to forward calls on your iphone

You’ll now see the number listed on the Call Forwarding screen. Note also that a new icon appears on your menu bar to remind you that call forwarding is active.

How to forward calls on your iphone

To turn call forwarding off, just return to the Call Forwarding settings screen and disable it. If you re-enable it in the future, it will remember the last number to which you forwarded calls and immediately begin forwarding them to that number again. This makes it easy to turn call forwarding on and off with no extra configuration required unless you want to change the forwarding number.

All Carriers: Use Your Carrier’s Codes

If you’re using Verizon or another carrier that provides CDMA-based phones, you won’t have the option to turn on call forwarding using just iOS settings. Instead, you’ll have to do it the old fashioned way using carrier codes that you key into the phone’s keypad. You can also do it this way if you have a GSM-based phone. Just note that you won’t get the reminder icon on the menu if you forward calls using carrier codes; you’ll have to remember when it’s turned on.

To set up call forwarding using a carrier code, all you have to do is open your phone’s keypad, type the code followed by the number to which you want to forward calls, and then hit the Call button.

How to forward calls on your iphone

The code you enter to enable or disable call forwarding changes depending on your carrier. You can always hit up your carrier’s web site to find out the right codes to use, but here’s a list of codes for the major US carriers:

  • AT&T. To enable, dial **21* followed by the ten-digit phone number to which you want to forward the calls. To disable, dial #21# .
  • T-Mobile. To enable, dial **21* followed by the ten-digit phone number. To disable, dial ##21# .
  • Verizon. To enable, dial *72 followed by the ten-digit phone number. To disable, dial *73 .
  • Sprint. To enable, dial *72 followed by the ten-digit phone number. To disable, dial *720 .

Again, you won’t have a notification icon letting you know when it’s active, but your phone should forward calls to the number you specify.

FAQ about iPhone call forwarding

Can you forward calls to other kinds of devices?

Yes, you can! If you set up call forwarding from your iPhone to another phone number, the phone you’re forwarding your calls to doesn’t have to be an iPhone. You can forward calls to landlines, Android devices, or other types of mobile phones.

What should you do if call forwarding isn’t working?

If your call forwarding isn’t working properly, or if you’re having trouble getting it set up, we would recommend contacting your mobile carrier. Some carriers may not offer call forwarding, or your personal plan may not include the service. Your service provider should be able to help you through any issues you may experience.

Is call forwarding free?

Most phone plans nowadays do include call forwarding as part of their service package. However, if you’re on an older or more budget-friendly phone plan, you may not be subscribed to a call forwarding service. Check the details of your phone plan to see if it’s included. If not, you may be charged extra on your next bill for enabling call forwarding.

Will I still receive any voicemail messages?

Most of the time, you won’t receive voicemail messages when you have call forwarding enabled. Call forwarding can interfere with your voicemail service. Your carrier may be able to give you more information about how their voicemail system works when call forwarding is enabled. Call their customer service department if you want to know more.

Does call waiting still work when calls are forwarded?

In most cases, call waiting will not work when you have call forwarding enabled. Generally, only one call can be forwarded at a time. Get in touch with your personal mobile service provider to ask about how their call forwarding/call waiting system works.

That covers everything you need to know about call forwarding on your iOS device. Have another question that we missed in our FAQ? Leave it in the comment section below. Understanding Call Forwarding

What is Call Forwarding?

With Call Forwarding, you can forward your mobile calls to another phone number, including another mobile phone or a landline phone, your home or office number.

You can set up Call Forwarding as either:

  • Immediate Call Forwarding lets you automatically forward all calls to another number, without making your mobile phone ring first.
  • Conditional Call Forwarding first sends calls to your mobile phone, and if you don’t answer or the phone’s in use, the call will be forwarded to another number.

Call Forwarding is available on all plans.

How much does Call Forwarding cost?

If you don’t have unlimited minutes, you’ll be billed for all forwarded calls according to your plan. You’ll be billed just like you would if you answered the call from your mobile phone, even if the calls are forwarded to a landline.

There’s no monthly fee for Call Forwarding on most plans, but a fee may apply on some older plans. If you have a plan that includes long distance, long distance isn’t charged on forwarded calls.

How do I forward calls?

You can turn on Call Forwarding from your mobile phone:

  • Immediate Call Forwarding (mobile phone won’t ring) – Call *72 + the 10-digit number that you want to forward your calls to (e.g., *72-908-123-4567).
  • Conditional Call Forwarding (mobile phone will ring first and forward call when there’s no answer) – Call *71 + the 10-digit number that you want to forward your calls to (e.g., *71-908-123-4567).

You can also turn on Call Forwarding by visiting My Verizon from your computer and through the My Verizon app.

Visit the following for step-by-step instructions to turn on Call Forwarding from the:

Prepaid accounts can only manage Call Forwarding by phone, not through My Verizon.

How do I stop forwarding calls?

You can turn off Call Forwarding from your mobile phone by calling *73. You should hear a confirmation tone or message.

Note: The confirmation tone may sound like a busy signal, but that’s OK. It still means your Call Forwarding has been turned off.

You can also turn off Call Forwarding by visiting My Verizon from your computer and through the My Verizon app.

Visit the following for step-by-step instructions to turn off Call Forwarding from the:

Prepaid accounts can only manage Call Forwarding by phone, not through My Verizon.

Can I forward my calls to another number if I don’t have my phone with me?

However, in order to complete the forwarding process, you may be required to enter an Online Authorization Code that we’ll send to your mobile device as a free text message. In most cases, you must have your mobile phone with you to receive that code and verify your identity.

If you’re an Account Member on your account, you may be able to send the Online Authorization Code to the Account Owner’s phone instead.

*Not currently available for prepaid accounts. Call Forwarding can only be turned on by calling from your prepaid mobile phone.

Can I use Call Forwarding while I’m outside of the Verizon wireless network?

You won’t be able to set up Call Forwarding if you’re outside the Verizon wireless coverage area or traveling internationally.

However, if you set it up before you start roaming, Call Forwarding should continue to work while you’re traveling.

Are there any restrictions on what number I can forward calls to?

The phone number you’re forwarding calls to must be 10 digits long. So even if you’re forwarding to a local number, be sure to include the area code.

Calls can’t be forwarded to an international number.

Does Call Forwarding also forward text messages?

No, Call Forwarding won’t forward text messages you receive on your mobile phone, only calls.

If you set up Verizon Messages (Message+) on your phone, you’ll be able to read your texts and reply to them online.

I activated Call Forwarding on my phone. Why are people getting a busy tone when they call me?

If callers are receiving a busy tone, you may want to check that the call was forwarded to the correct phone number. Sometimes additional buttons are accidentally pressed while setting up Call Forwarding. If that happens, the number won’t be recognized.

Set up Call Forwarding again from your mobile phone by calling *72 plus the forwarding phone number, including the area code (e.g., *72-555-555-5555).

You can also edit the number you’re forwarding calls to online from the Call Forwarding page in My Verizon.*

Note: Calls can’t be forwarded to international numbers.

*Not currently available for prepaid accounts. Call Forwarding can only be turned on by calling from your prepaid mobile phone.
