Using PowerPoint’s Screen Recorder
PowerPoint comes with a built-in, no-nonsense screen recorder. There are a lot of things that PowerPoint’s screen recorder can’t do that more full-featured screen recording software can, but that’s the beauty of it—it’s great for a quick, no-fuss recording.
First, open PowerPoint, head to the “Insert” tab, and then click “Screen Recording.”
PowerPoint will minimize, and the screen recording dock will appear at the top of your screen. Here’s where the “simplicity” of PowerPoint’s screen recording feature comes in—you only have five options. By default, PowerPoint will record audio and your cursor. Toggle these options to disable them if you want. When you’re ready to move on, click “Select Area.”
Your pointer will turn into a crosshair. Click and drag to select the area of your screen you want to record.
Next, click the “Record” button in the screen recorder dock.
A three-second countdown will begin. Once it reaches zero, your recording will begin. When you’ve finished recording everything, move your cursor back to the top of the screen where the dock was, and the dock will reappear. Click “Stop.”
Your screen recording will now appear in your PowerPoint slide.
Customizing Your Recording
Now that you’ve successfully embedded the recording in your presentation, you might want to adjust a few of the settings. There are a few things you can do here, including trimming the video, setting how the video plays during the presentation, or applying a style to the video’s frame.
Trimming Your Video
There may be a few seconds of your video that you’d like to remove. You can trim these parts out directly in PowerPoint. Right-click the video and select “Trim.”
The “Trim Video” window will appear. Here, click and drag the green and red bars to adjust the start and stop time, respectively. Once you’ve set this up, click “OK.”
Your video will now be trimmed.
Setting Video Playback Rules
You can tell PowerPoint how to play your video during the presentation. To do this, right-click the video and select “Start” from the menu.
A sub-menu will appear, presenting three different playback options:
- In Click Sequence: The video will play in the appropriate order you’ve set in terms of actionable sequences (such as animations).
- Automatically: The video will automatically play when it appears.
- When Clicked On: The video will play when you click on it.
Select the one that works best for you.
Applying Frame Styles
If you want to make your video more visually appealing, you can apply a frame to it. To do so, right-click the video and select “Style” from the menu.
A sub-menu will appear, presenting a large library of frames for your video. Hovering over each one will show a live preview of how the frame will look.
Select the one you like, and it will be applied to your video.
Record the Screen in PowerPoint: Overview
You can record the screen in PowerPoint and add it, with or without audio, to a presentation, by using the “Screen Recording” command. Drag your cursor to the area you want to be the bottom-right of the area to record. A dotted rectangle will outline the area to be recorded on the screen. Anything displayed inside the outline will be recorded.
The “Audio” and “Record Pointer” commands are automatically selected by PowerPoint. You can click either of these commands to turn them off, before you start recording. Open the program, video or whatever it is that you are recording and make sure what you want recorded is contained in the red rectangle.
When you are ready to record the screen in PowerPoint, click the “Record” button in the popup box. You will be given a three second countdown before recording begins. When you have completed recording, click the large square in the popup box to stop recording. You can also press the “Windows logo key” + “Shift” + “Q” keys on your keyboard to stop recording.

Your screen recording will display in the current slide you are working on as a new object. To save your screen recording, right-click the object and choose “Save Media as…” A dialog box will open. Navigate to where you want to save the file. Enter a name for the file in the “Name:” field and click “Save” to save the screen recording.
You can now manipulate the screen recording as needed. It will act just like any other video file inserted into a presentation.

- In the dialog box that opens, navigate to where you want to save the file.
- Enter a name for the file in the “Name:” field and click “Save” to save the screen recording.
- You can now manipulate the object as you would any other object.

- The Control Dock will appear, which is a small rectangle that displays at the top. You’ll be prompted to select the screen area for the recording. Drag the cross-haired cursor to select the area or use the keyboard shortcut Windows logo key + Shift + F for your entire screen. The minimum size for screen recordings is 64 by 64 pixels. If you don’t select the correct area, click the Select Area button to begin again.
- By default, PowerPoint will record your mouse pointer and your computer audio. If you prefer not to include these, click to deselect Audio or Record Pointer in the Control Dock.
- When you’re ready, hit the red Record button in the Dock. You’ll see a brief countdown so that you can prepare. You can then perform the actions you want to record in the selected area.
- If you need to pause, the Record button will transform into a Pause button during recording. Click it to pause and then click Record to resume.
- You’ll see the elapsed time below the Stop button, which is helpful if you have a time limit for the recording. Click the Stop button or use the shortcut Windows logo key + Shift + Q to stop recording.
Immediately after clicking the Stop button, your recording will pop onto the slide you selected in PowerPoint. You can click the Play button on the recording to watch what you captured, move forward or back, mute, or adjust the volume if you recorded audio.
To make sure you don’t lose the recording you carefully captured, you should save your presentation. Click File > Save or Save As, as you normally would, to save your slideshow.
Edit Your Screen Recording
After your recording appears on your slide, you’ll also be redirected to a Video Format tab where you can edit your recording. You have plenty of ways to customize and adjust your screen recording.
Starting on the left of the ribbon, you have these options:
Adjust: Make brightness or contrast corrections, add a color filter, use a frame, or reset formatting adjustments you make.
Video Styles: Use a style, make the recording a shape, add a color border, or apply an effect like shadow or bevel.
Accessibility: Click the Alt Text button to include alternative text for your recording that describes the object.
Arrange: Bring the recording forward or send it back if you have other objects on the slide. Or, use the alignment, group, and rotate features.
Size: Crop or adjust the height and width of the recording.
Control the Playback for Your Recording
After you finish making adjustments to your screen recording, you can click the next tab for Playback. Here you can trim the video, choose the volume level, and pick how to play the recording.
Bookmark: Add or remove a bookmark for the current time in the recording.
Editing: Trim your video or add fade in and fade out effects with the duration for each.
Video Options: Select a volume level, choose when to play the recording (in click sequence, automatically, or when clicked on), play it in full screen, loop the video, or rewind it after playing.
Insert Captions: Insert WebVTT closed captions that you have saved on your computer.
Save the Recording as a Separate File

- Right-click the recording on the slide.
- Select Save Media as.
- Choose a location on your computer and a File name. By default, the recording will be saved as an MP4 file.

I have recently started to have problems with making screen recordings in PowerPoint in Office 365.
I can make a screen recording, but it has nearly no duration. This example lasts 00:00.114 seconds. Other attempts produce nearly identical results.
I have been able to make screen recordings with no problems up until a few days ago. I do have three monitors, but have tried with only one attached. This behavior occurs even after full restarts of the computer.
My Windows 10 and Office 365 are all up to date.
Any help would be appreciated.

Try following one by one and see after every step whether it resolves the issue-
1. Sometimes, add-ins can cause problems. To determine, if add-in is a problem start your application in safe mode and see if problem has gone away.
To start in Safe Mode –
Hold CTRL key and click on application icon and don’t release the CTRL key till it asks you for Safe mode confirmation.
If yes, then start application normally and disable add-ins one by one and start application again every time you disable an add-in to determine the culprit add-in.
2. Try repairing your office installation (Quick repair is good enough). Try repairing your Office installation. First try Quick Repair (takes 5 – 10 mins) , if that doesn’t help then try Online Repair (Takes more than 30 mins but less than 1 hour in general)
3. Login to Windows with a new user profile and see if problem is resolved.
4. Sometimes, this is caused due to application not being able to access the default printer. Close all office applications and change your default printer through Start > Devices and Printers to another printer. It may be some physical one or One Note or XPS or PDF or anything else. If this is the problem, then you will need to update your printer driver for default printer.
5. Many third party applications also cause the problem like Tuneup Utilities, Abby Finereader, Kaspersky / Avast Anti Virus etc. See if you have any of them installed. Close them one by one and see whether it helps.

Get started
To record your screen, you must use the latest Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome on Windows 10 or macOS. Learn about supported browsers and limitations.
Select Create > Record screen in Microsoft Stream.
When prompted by your browser, select Allow Microsoft Stream to use your camera and microphone.
If you select Block, your camera and microphone will be disabled. To enable them, click Lock icon in your browser’s address bar and select Allow next to the appropriate device.
Select or to set up your camera and microphone. If you’re using a USB camera or microphone, make sure it’s plugged in and select it from the menu. You can also turn off your camera and microphone if you don’t wish to include them in your recording.
You’re now ready to start recording!
Record the screen
Select to start recording.
Select which content from your screen you wish to share—your entire screen, an application window, or browser tab—then click Share. To include audio from your computer in the recording, select the checkbox Share audio.
If you’re using macOS Catalina, you may need to set up screen recording permissions in System Preferences. Learn more about macOS Catalina permissions.
Wait until the countdown for the recording to begin. Once you begin, you’ll see a timer and the time limit.
You can now switch to the application or window you wish to record.
When you’re finished recording, or if you want to take a break, switch back to the Microsoft Stream screen recorder tab in your browser.
Select   to pause recording the screen, audio, and camera at any time. Select to Resume.
When you’re finished, select Next to review your recording.
Review the recording
On this page, select the Play button to review the recording. Select Record again if you’re not satisfied and want to try again.
When you’re satisfied with your recording, select Upload to Stream to continue to the next step.
If you want to trim the video, you can do so after uploading and processing the recording.
Upload screen recording
On this page, your video will start uploading to Stream. While you wait, you can:
Monitor the uploading progress
Fill in the video name, description, and language in the details section
When published, everyone in your company will have permission to view your video. To make the video visible only to yourself, deselect this checkbox: Allow everyone in your company to watch this video
To set custom permissions, groups, channels, and other options, click Update video details
After the upload is complete, you can either publish or save, as follows:
a. Click Publish. Your video is now ready! Select Go to Video to go to the video page on Stream and watch or share your video. After processing is complete, you can also trim your video by selecting the More actions menu , then click Trim video.
b. Click Save as draft if you’re not yet ready to publish your video. Your video will be saved to My Content > Videos in Stream, from where you can publish it at any time.
Supported browsers and limitations
Screen Recorder works on the following browsers:
Safari on MacOS is not supported
Microsoft Stream Mobile on iOS and Android is not supported in mobile browsers
Recording system audio is available only on Windows, not macOS
Including the camera in the recording is available only when recording the entire screen, not when recording an application window or browser tab.
Screen recordings are limited to a maximum length of 15 minutes. For longer content, break up your video into shorter segments.
