Recording your smartphone or computer’s screen can be useful, but sometimes you have to download third-party apps to do it. Fortunately, Chromebooks have a built-in tool that makes it easy to create screen recordings with no extra software required.
Introduced in Chrome OS 89, the Chromebook screen recorder tool is available in the Quick Settings panel. The tool can be used to capture static screenshots and record video. It’s surprisingly powerful, yet easy to use. We’ll show you how it works.
First, click the clock on the Shelf in the bottom-right corner to open the Quick Settings panel.
Select the arrow in the top-right of the menu if it’s not fully expanded.
Next, click the “Screen Capture” button.
The Screen Capture toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen. Make sure the video icon is selected for screen recording. The camera icon will only capture screenshots on your Chromebook.
There are a few different ways you can record the screen. You can choose to record the full screen, partial screen, or a specific window. Select one to proceed.
Before we start recording, click the gear icon. Here you can choose to record audio through the onboard microphone during the screen recording.
Starting the recording is a little different depending on the type you selected.
- Full Screen: Click anywhere on the screen to begin recording.
- Partial: Drag to select the area you want to record and then click the “Record” button.
- Window: Click the window or area of the screen you want to record to begin recording.
As mentioned, with a full-screen screen recording, simply click anywhere on your Chromebook’s display.
Full-Screen Recording
If you only want to capture a small section of your computer’s display, drag out the capture window and then click the “Record” button.
Partial Recording
And with window recording, begin the screen video capture by selecting the specific window you wish to record.
Window Recording
A three-second countdown will appear on-screen and then the recording will begin. When you’re finished recording, click the red stop button on the Shelf.
A notification will appear after that says “Screen Recording Taken.” Click it to go to the video file in your “Downloads” folder.
The folder will open and you can select the video file to watch, share, save to Google Drive, or delete the recording.
The built-in screen recording tool a great, easy way to create screen recordings on your Chromebook. The only annoying thing is the videos are saved as WEBM files. You’ll want to use an online converter to change them to MP4.

Screenshots are great, but sometimes you need to create a video recording to really get your point across. You can record your computer’s desktop, your smartphone’s screen, or your tablet’s display.
This process gives you a video file, which you can do whatever you like with. Upload it to YouTube or email it to a friend. Put together a video tutorial or just capture a problem you’re having so you an demonstrate it later.
Windows
Windows 10 includes a built-in tool for recording your screen, so you don’t need to install anything—just use the GameDVR tool to create a quick desktop recording. Don’t let the name fool you: GameDVR can record any application, even if it’s not a game.
For more advanced screencasts (or Windows 7 users), we recommend OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). It’s a powerful, free, open-source tool that allows you to do a lot more than GameDVR. Insert watermarks, embed a video of your webcam while capturing your desktop, or capture multiple windows at once and position them wherever you like. OBS is widely used for video game streaming on Twitch.tv because it’s so powerful, but it works just as well for creating a professional-looking video of your desktop.
If you want something even more powerful that also comes with editing capabilities, you can pay for Camtasia, which doesn’t just record your screen, but contains powerful video editing tools as well. Just be warned, it’s not cheap. Luckily they do have a free trial, so you can test it before you buy.
macOS
macOS offers a convenient, built-in screen-recording tool. It’s one of the many useful functions hidden in QuickTime, which is more than just the simple media player it looks like on the surface.
To record your Mac’s screen, open the QuickTime application and click File > New Screen Recording.
You can then click the little menu to the right of the Record button and choose whether you want to capture audio from your microphone in the video, too. This will allow you to narrate along with your actions. Click the Record button to start when you’re ready.
QuickTime will minimize itself to a small icon on the right side of your menu bar and start recording. Click Stop when you’re done, and you’ll be able to preview and save your video. QuickTime can also edit the video, trimming out any unnecessary bits.
For something more powerful, you may want to try Open Broadcaster Software (OBS). It’s not just for Windows—it works on Mac, too. If you want something even more powerful that also comes with editing capabilities, you can pay for Camtasia, which has powerful screen recording and video editing tools, but like we mentioned earlier, it’s not cheap.
Android
Android allows you to record your screen through a few different methods. The easiest is to download an app with screen recording features, like AZ Screen Recorder. It has a ton of features, allowing you to control the quality of the video, record your voice, add a watermark, or even record video from your camera as well.
Alternatively, Android also allows you to capture a video of your device’s display via the adb command if you connect your Android device to your computer, but you’ll likely find apps like AZ Screen Recorder more convenient. You can read up on both methods here.
iPhone or iPad
There are two ways to record an iPhone or iPad’s screen: An official one that requires a Mac and an unofficial one that can be performed on a Windows PC.
Apple offers a convenient, official way to record an iPhone or iPad’s screen. This requires a Mac running OS X Yosemite or newer, along with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iOS 8 or newer. Unfortunately, this feature is only available for Mac users. It’s intended for developers to capture their apps in action, and iOS developers will need to have Macs anyway.
If you have a Mac and an iPhone or iPad, you can connect your iPhone or iPad to it and use the QuickTime application to capture its screen. Just select File > New Movie Recording, click the menu button next to the record button, and select the connected iOS device instead of your Mac’s built-in webcam.
If you don’t have a Mac, you can use AirPlay mirroring software like the free LonelyScreen tool to view your iPhone or iPad’s screen on your computer’s desktop and record it using any Windows screen capture tool.
Linux
There are quite a few open-source screen-recording applications for Linux, and you’ll probably find many of them if you pull up your Linux distribution’s package manager and do a quick search. There’s even a way to do this with ffmpeg and other commands from the terminal, if you’re into that sort of thing.
One of the most popular and longest-standing open-source tools for this is recordMyDesktop, which you can install from the Ubuntu Software Center or your Linux distribution’s package management interface of choice.
Launch recordMyDesktop and use its options to choose video and audio quality levels. This tool can record your entire desktop or just a small portion of it. recordMyDesktop works well, provides a simple interface, and offers the most important desktop-recording options.
If you want something more powerful, try Open Broadcaster Software (OBS). It’s available for Linux as well as Windows and macOS.
You can live-stream your desktop instead of recording it, too. On a desktop PC or laptop, OBS works very well for live-streaming. You can even live-stream your desktop straight from VLC!
Here’s how to capture your computer screen using the built-in tools in Windows and macOS as well as a couple of third-party screen capture apps.
Want to record the screen on your computer? Maybe you’re a professional who needs to capture your screen for a presentation at work, a software developer generating a how-to video, or just someone who wants to upload a helpful video clip to YouTube. Windows and macOS allow you to capture your screen activity thanks to built-in tools, though there are also many third-party screen-capture apps. Here’s how to get started.
Xbox Game Bar
Built into Windows 10, Game Bar is designed to record games that you play directly on your PC or those you stream from an Xbox console. However, it can just as easily capture screen activity from other applications. To set this up, go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and turn on the Enable Xbox Game Bar switch.
Here, you can also change any of the keyboard shortcuts for opening the Game Bar, taking a screenshot, and recording a video. And if you connect an Xbox Controller to your PC, you can trigger the Game Bar by pressing the Xbox button on the controller (Opens in a new window) .
You’ll be able to record activity in most applications and windows, except the Windows desktop, File Explorer, and certain Windows apps, such as Weather. Navigate to the screen you wish to record and press Win + G to open Game Bar. Several Game Bar widgets appear on the screen with controls for capturing screenshots, recording video and audio, and broadcasting your screen activity.
Click the Start Recording button or use the Win + Alt + R keyboard shortcut to capture your screen activity. Now perform whatever screen actions you want to capture. After you click on the screen, the Game Bar widgets vanish, replaced by a small floating bar in the upper-right corner of the screen through which you can control the recording.
To stop the recording, click the Recording button on the floating bar. Once the recording ends, a notification tells you that the game clip was recorded. Click the notification to view your video in the Game Bar. Click the Play button to play the video.
You can also access and play your video from its default location in File Explorer: C:\Users\[username]\Videos\Captures. Your videos will be stored here as an MP4 file, which can then be uploaded anywhere you like.
You can tweak the Game Bar if you go to Settings > Gaming > Captures. From here, you’re able to change the default file location for your videos, turn on background recording to capture activity after the fact, opt to record video along with your audio, and switch the frame rate between 30 and 60 frames per second.
In Game Bar itself, click the Settings icon to the right of the top bar. Browse the different categories under Settings to modify the shortcuts, change the theme, tweak the widgets, set up background recording, and record the audio with the video.
macOS Screenshot Tool
Your Mac comes with its own screen-recording feature on macOS Mojave and higher. Open the app or window you want to record and press Shift + Command + 5 to open the system’s screen-capture tool. From the bottom toolbar, you can opt to capture the entire screen, just the selected window, or a custom portion of the screen. For video, your options include recording the entire screen or a custom portion.
Click the Options button and you can choose where to save your recording and initiate a countdown timer to start the recording. Make sure to check the option to use your Mac’s microphone if you’re recording your own voice or external audio.
Click Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion to begin recording. A Recording button appears at the top of the screen on the menu bar. Click this button to stop recording, and a thumbnail of your recording will be added to your computer. Double-click the screen recording file to play it in your default video player.
You can also trigger the screen recording directly from QuickTime on a Mac. Open QuickTime Player and then click File > New Screen Recording. The first time you do this, you’ll be asked to open System Preferences to grant QuickTime Player permission to record your screen. Go into your settings and check the box to grant the proper permissions. Start the new recording through QuickTime again, and you can then use the Mac’s recording tool.
OBS Studio
The free OBS Studio (Opens in a new window) works with Windows, macOS, and Linux, and packs a lot of features into one program. Use the program’s floating control panel to start and stop your recording. Along the way, OBS Studio can record screen activity, your microphone, and computer audio. The program then saves the output as an MP4 file.
You can also stream your video live or turn to Studio Mode for adding cuts, fades, and other transitions to the video. The program offers an array of settings where you can change the format and other criteria for both the video and audio portions of the recording. OBS Studio looks intimidating at first, but you should be able to catch on and learn how to use it effectively.
Free Cam
Free Cam (Opens in a new window) is an extremely basic screen recorder for Windows users, but it remains capable for most needs. This program captures your screen activity and audio, then saves your recording as a WMV file. Simply click the New Recording button, then select which area of the screen you want to capture, anything from a single window or application to the entire screen.
Click the Record button to begin the capture, then press Esc when you’re done. Your recording appears in a preview window where you can edit it, save it as a video file, or upload it directly to YouTube.
If you need to record the screen on your smartphone, we have a guide for using the built-in recorder on iPhone and iPad. We can also help you choose the right app for Android devices.

Windows 10 includes a built-in tool for recording videos of PC games. You can upload gameplay footage to YouTube or any other video-sharing site — or just keep the clip on your own PC and share it with your friends.
You can do this with the “Game Bar,” which is part of the “Game DVR” feature offered by the Xbox app. Windows 10 also includes customizable keyboard shortcuts for recording videos and capturing screenshots.
Open the Game Bar
To open the Game Bar while playing a game, press Windows Key + G. It will pop up above the game you’re playing. If you press Windows Key + G while Windows thinks you aren’t playing a game, Windows will ask if you really want to open the game bar.
You may need to be playing the PC game in windowed mode to see the game bar, so try setting your game to windowed mode if you don’t see it.
The Game bar includes icons for quickly opening the Xbox app, controlling background recording, taking a screenshot, recording a gameplay video, and accessing settings.
Record a Gameplay Video
To record a video, open the Game Bar with Windows Key + G and then click the red record button. A timer will appear at the top-right corner of your game window while it’s recording.
To stop recording the window, bring up the Game Bar again and click the red stop button.
You can also start and stop recordings with Windows Key + Alt + R. If you’d like to hide or show the timer, press Windows Key + Alt + T. These are the default keyboard shortcuts — you can change them in the Xbox app.
Take a Game Screenshot
Use the Game Bar to quickly take a screenshot by clicking the screenshot icon at the center of the game bar. Or, press Windows Key + Alt + Print Screen to take a screenshot of the current game.
Find Your Videos and Screenshots
Windows saves all videos you record and screenshots you capture to your user account’s Videos\Captures folder. Videos are saved as .mp4 files and screenshots are saved as .png files, each tagged with the game’s name and the date and time you captured them.
You can also access these in the Xbox app. Open the Xbox app from your Start menu and click the “Game DVR” icon at the left side of the app to access the Game DVR section. You’ll see a sorted list of all your captures screenshots and videos under “On this PC.” You can view and watch them from within the Xbox app.
Configure Game DVR Settings
The Game Bar and Game DVR settings are controlled from within the Xbox app. Open the Xbox app, click the Settings icon, and then select Game DVR to customize them.
You can disable the Game DVR entirely from here, or set different keyboard shortcuts for opening the game bar, recording videos, taking screenshots, toggling the timer, and using the “Record that” feature.
There are also options for selecting the folders where Windows 10 will save game clips and screenshots, and choosing different video quality and resolution settings. By default, audio is saved when you record gameplay — you can tell the Game Bar to not record audio or control the audio quality level from here.
Use Background Recording
The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 automatically record your gameplay in the background, allowing you to instantly save interesting gameplay clips after they happen.
Game DVR on Windows 10 can function similarly. To use this feature, you’ll need to enable the “Record in the background while I’m playing a game” option under Game DVR Settings in the Xbox app. As the Xbox app tells you, “this may affect game performance.” System resources will be constantly used for recording while playing games with this setting enabled, so you’ll want to leave it enabled unless you really want to record gameplay or you have a very powerful PC with extra resources to spare.
By default, it will always record and keep the last 30 seconds. To save the last 30 seconds, you can open the Game Bar and click the second icon from the left, or press Windows + Alt + G. This is the “Record that” feature, which will automatically save the last recorded bit of gameplay. It works similarly to the equivalent feature on Xbox One.

It may not be every day, but there will be times when you need to mirror your Android screen to your Linux PC. There may be any number of reasons like giving presentations from your mobile phone, to checking the app you are developing without touching your Android device, to viewing photos and other media on a bigger screen, etc. No matter what the reason is, it is really easy to cast your Android screen to a Linux desktop. Here’s how to do it in a simple and straightforward way.
There are many ways to cast or mirror Android screen to your Linux PC. I’m going to show you two of the easiest methods, both wired and wireless methods. Follow the method you are comfortable with. Moreover, the methods shown below are independent of any Linux distribution. All you need to have is the Google Chrome web browser.

Cast Your Android Screen to a Linux Desktop Wirelessly
To cast your Android screen to a Linux Desktop wirelessly, we are going to use a free app called Screen Cast. This app is pretty minimal and casts your Android screen wirelessly as long as both your system and the Android device are on the same network.
Download and install Screen Cast like any other Android app. Once installed, open the app menu and launch the app. After launching the app, tap on the “Start” button appearing on the main screen.
In the confirmation window tap on the button “Start Now.” If you don’t want to see this window again, simply select the checkbox “Don’t show again.”
Now, type the displayed URL in your favorite browser. As soon as you execute the URL, your screencasting will start, and anything you do on your Android device will be mirrored on your Linux machine.
Being a minimal app, there are no settings to tweak the image quality while casting. However, you can password protect the connection. To enable password protection, tap on the Menu icon (three horizontal lines) appearing in the upper-left corner and select the option “Settings.”
Select the checkbox “Required password for viewing screen cast” and you are good to go.
From this point forward, whenever you try to access a screencast from your web browser, you will be prompted for the password. Simply type the password displayed in the app and the screencasting will start.
Cast Your Android Screen to a Linux Desktop Via USB
If you are not on the same network or not able to cast your screen wirelessly, you can achieve the same by connecting your Android device via USB. Before you can do anything, you need to enable the Developer option followed by the USB debugging mode.
Open Developer Options. Now, scroll down and toggle the button next to “USB Debugging Mode” to enable USB debugging mode.
After enabling the debugging mode, open your Chrome web browser and install Vysor Chrome App.
Once installed, connect your Android device via USB and launch the Vysor app in the Chrome browser. You can access all your Chrome apps by entering the URL chrome://apps in the address bar.
The above action will open the Vysor app. Here, click on the “Find Devices” button.
As soon as you click on the button, Vysor will list all the attached Android devices. Select your device from the list and click on the “Select” button.
You will be prompted whether or not you want to allow the connection on your Android device. Simply tap on the “OK” button to continue.
Once you allow the connection, Vysor will automatically install the required Vysor Android app. After the installation procedure, you will see your Android screen cast to your Linux machine.
The good thing about Vysor is that you can control your device directly from your desktop. If you want to, you can also record and take screenshots by clicking on the Video and Camera icons respectively.
Moreover, by clicking on the little settings icon, you can customize different settings like casting quality, resolution, etc.
However, most of the settings are locked, and you need to purchase the app to unlock them. With the pro version you can also cast your Android screen wirelessly.
Do comment below sharing your thoughts and experiences about using the above methods to cast your Android screen to Linux.

Chrome’s Incognito Mode allows you to surf the web without leaving a trace, so that you may browse privately. However, this theoretically implies that there’s no record, or history, of your search history. Luckily there are still some ways to find your history. Below we explain how to in greater detail of how you can see your incognito on Chrome on Android, Mac and Windows devices.
How to view incognito history?
With a Chrome extension
If you’re on Google Chrome, a great way to temporarily save your history in Incognito mode is to install Off The Record. This extension lets you access any closed tabs, as long as you’re in the same browsing session. Once you close your browser, you will no longer be able to access you history in Incognito mode.
With Windows DNS records
If you’re using a Windows PC, you can access the entire DNS record of internet actions, including while in Incognito mode. First go to the Run menu by typing Run in the search bar. You can also access it using the Windows + R command.
In the pop-up window that opens, enter cmd and press OK. On the next screen enter: ipconfig/displaydns, and then click the enter. Now you will have access to you internet history. To delete it, on the same screen type ipconfig / flushdns and press enter.
Imagine you need to show someone how to log in to an online account or how to use a feature in a product. You could write out an email. Or you could capture your screen and take a few screenshots.
But best of all might be recording your screen.
Screen recording, also known as a screencast, is perfect for creating:

Choose your screen recorder
The first thing you’ll need to do is choose the screen recording software you’ll use. A
Snagit is great for simple, short desktop recordings, while something like Camtasia might be better for longer, more complex jobs.
However, recordings made with Snagit can be easily shared with Camtasia and assembled into longer, more complex videos there.
Today, I’ll show you how to record your screen with Snagit for simple recordings, and Camtasia for more polished videos.
How to record your desktop screen (Use Snagit for short, quick recordings)
Short, simple recordings that won’t require much editing can be done with something like Snagit (which is what I use most of the time).
Snagit is great for screenshots and quick and easy screen recordings. It’s perfect for when you want videos that look great, but don’t take hours of editing time.
Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Choose what you want to record
Step 2: Record your audio or webcam
Step 3: Trim your video
Step 4: Save or share
When you have your video ready to share, use the Share menu to save the video or send it to the web.
How to record your computer screen (Use Camtasia for polished, professional-quality screen recordings)
Longer or more complex recordings may need more editing. Something like Camtasia will give you a full built-in video editing suite of tools you can use.
Camtasia even allows you to enhance the video by zooming in on areas of emphasis, highlighting your mouse clicks, adding text or graphic call-outs, and more.
Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Choose your recording options
Step 2: Choose the region you want to record
Step 3: Record your desktop with audio (if you want to)
Step 4: Edit your video
Step 5: Produce and share
How to record your screen with sound
To record your voice, select the microphone. And if you want to record the sounds that come from your computer, like the beeps and boops you hear, select the system audio option.
When you record your screen you can include typing the address into your browser and show all your mouse movements and clicks to let people see exactly where to go and how to get there.
You can include video and audio when you record your screen too. Use microphone audio to narrate your video from your computer’s built-in microphone or an external mic.
You can also record your system audio (that’s the sound that comes out of your speakers).
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Yep! Here are a few of the top shortcuts for Snagit and Camtasia:
Snagit Hotkeys
Start Recording
- Windows: Shift+F9
- Mac: Control+Shift+Spacebar
Pause/Resume Recording
- Windows: Shift+F9
- Mac: Control+Shift+Spacebar
Stop Recording
- Windows: Shift+F10
- Mac: Control+Shift+V
To configure your own hotkeys for your keyboard, see Customize the Snagit Hotkeys.
Camtasia Shortcuts
Start/Pause Recording
- Windows: F9
- Mac: Command+Shift+2
Stop Recording
- Windows: F10
- Mac: Command+Option+2
To customize the shortcuts for your keyboard, see Customize Camtasia Shortcuts
Should I use a free screen recorder?
Maybe. You can use free apps like QuickTime (on Mac) or Xbox App (Windows), but, if you’re comparing different screen recording tools, make sure you get a screen recorder with sound recording and video editing options built-in.
The problem with many built-in screen recorders that come standard on your computer is that they limit you to just recording. And you end up needing extra tools and software just to edit and share your videos.
Quick tips!
- Camtasia’s advanced (but super-easy-to-use) video editing capabilities allow you to add audio tracks after you record your screen. Whether you want to record your narration after the fact or want to add some music, you can do it!
- Be prepared to record your screen a time or two to get what you want. Almost everyone messes something up along the way. But recording your screen is so easy, it won’t matter if you have to do it again.
- Don’t get too hung up on making everything perfect. If you’re demonstrating a process, make sure the steps are clear and easy to follow. If you’re narrating, you can decide how many “umms” and “uhs” you can live with. It also depends on your audience.
- Recordings meant for people outside your company probably need to be more polished than things you’re sending to one of your fellow employees.
- We also have a full list of screen recording tips that you can use to get the best recordings possible.

Apple AirPlay allows users to seamlessly mirror their iPhone or iPad screen to Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TVs out of the box, but what if you want to use this feature on your Windows PC? You’ll be pleased to know that there are multiple software choices that you can make use of to accomplish mirroring an iPhone or iPad screen to a PC, like Reflector, ApowerMirror, LonelyScreen, and more.
These software applications essentially turn your Windows PC into an AirPlay receiver and allows you to share videos, presentations, spreadsheets and just about anything that’s displayed on your iOS or ipadOS device’s screen wirelessly. Plus, you don’t need to install any additional third-party app on your phone, as everything is handled by the software on your Windows PC.
Most of the AirPlay receiver software work in a very similar way, so if you’re interested in trying this out, we’ll walk you through the necessary steps to screen mirror iPhone or iPad to your Windows PC using Reflector 3.
How to Screen Mirror iPhone or iPad to Windows PC
Before you get started with the procedure, you’ll need to install Reflector 3 on your Windows PC. You can take advantage of the free 7-day trial before you decide on purchasing the software. Once you’ve installed it, simply follow the steps below to mirror your screen.
- Open Reflector 3 on your computer. If you don’t know where you installed it, use the Windows search bar to find it. Now, click on “Try Reflector 3” if you’re not willing to purchase it.
The software will now open up in a tiny window and you’ll see that no devices are connected.
Next, you’ll need to head over to the Control Center on your iOS device. If you’re using an iPad, iPhone X or newer device, you can access the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right edge of the screen. However, if you’re using an iPhone with a physical home button, simply swipe up from the bottom of your screen.
Now, long-press on “Screen Mirroring” as shown in the screenshot below.
Here, you’ll see your PC show up in the list of AirPlay receivers. Tap on it.
Now, you’ll be asked to enter an onscreen code that’ll be displayed by the software on your PC as shown below.
Type in the code and press “OK” to initiate the connection.
As you can see here, the screen mirroring session has begun. If you want to disconnect at any time, you can either tap “Stop Mirroring” on your iOS device or simply click the “x” icon in Reflector.
There you go, you’re now able to mirror your iPhone or iPad screen to a Windows PC. Pretty easy, right?
If you hover over the screen mirroring window on your PC, you’ll have the option to take a screenshot or record your screen using Reflector.
By default, the resolution of the mirrored content is set to 1080p, but this can be easily adjusted within the software’s settings.
Once the 7-day trial period is over, you’ll have to purchase Reflector for $17.99 in order to continue using it. However, the pricing is reasonable in comparison to various other AirPlay receiver software like ApowerMirror that costs $59.95 for a lifetime license. That being said, if you want a completely free solution to mirror your screen, you might be interested in trying out LetsView. Regardless of what software you choose to use, the procedure to mirror your iPhone or iPad screen will remain fairly identical, so feel free to explore other apps and share with us what you find works the best.
Do you use a Mac as your secondary computer? If so, you’ll be pleased to know that AirPlay receiver software like Reflector are available for macOS devices too. You can take advantage of it to mirror content to your MacBook or iMac from your iOS device. Likewise, once you’ve learned how to use AirPlay mirroring on a Mac, you can also mirror your Mac’s display to a Windows machine using these software.
We hope you managed to mirror your iPhone or iPad screen to a Windows PC without any issues. Have you tried out any software other than Reflector? Let us know your experiences with mirroring iPhone and iPad to PC’s in the comments!

At a time where work from home has taken center stage, screen sharing has become a must-have feature in every video conferencing app. Considering how essential this feature is for collaboration and presentation, most video-conferencing services like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet have supported it for the longest time. Better later than never, Apple’s FaceTime video calling service has also joined the party with seamless SharePlay (enabling you to watch movies, TV shows, and listen to music together with friends) and screen sharing features. That means you can now share your screen using FaceTime on Mac for improved collaboration. With that said, let me show you how screen sharing works in FaceTime on macOS Monterey.
Share Screen Using FaceTime on Mac (December 2021)
Before getting started, make sure to check the requirements to keep hardware or software incompatibility at bay while using this nifty new FaceTime feature.
How Does Screen Sharing Work in FaceTime on Mac & What Are the Requirements?
Screen sharing in FaceTime on macOS Monterey works almost the same way as it does on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Once you have initiated a FaceTime call, you need to click the screen-sharing icon to start broadcasting your screen to others in the call.
As for the requirements, your Apple devices must be running macOS 12.1, iOS 15.1 or later, and iPadOS 15.1 or later. It’s worth pointing out the devices of all the participants must also be equipped with the supported operating systems and not just the host.
Can You Use FaceTime Share Screen with Android or Windows Users?
Sadly, there is no way to share your screen with Android or Windows users in a FaceTime call. Call it Apple’s age-old ploy to keep notable features exclusive to Apple Device users or a strategy to entice non-Apple device users to switch over. Even though you can now use Apple FaceTime on Android and Windows devices, you have to live with this harsh reality – for better or worse.
The Facetime functionality is rather limited on Android and Windows devices. To be more precise, non-Apple device users are merely allowed to join a FaceTime call (audio/ video) via a link. Forget about generating a FaceTime call link. They can’t even take part in any screen-sharing or SharePlay-enabled calls. What if that non-Apple device owner happens to be a loved one or close friend? Wouldn’t they feel left out of your movie night or the exciting virtual watch party powered by SharePlay? Sure they would.
A light FaceTime web app with all the basic features could have been a better option. It would have not only delivered a great experience to the end-user but also for Apple’s effort to establish its video-calling app as a compelling alternative to Zoom or Google Meet. While the rest of the world puts emphasis on connecting lives during the pandemic, FaceTime seems to be disconnected more than ever before. Hopefully, Apple listens to user feedback and fixes it sooner than later.
Enable and Use Screen Sharing in FaceTime on macOS Monterey
1. To get started, launch the FaceTime app on your Mac.
2. Now, click on “New FaceTime” and add the contact you wish to share your screen with. After that, hit the “FaceTime” button to initiate a video call. Alternately, you can also select a recent contact to start a call.
3. Once the call has connected, click the “SharePlay” icon in the FaceTime controls overlay. The SharePlay icon sits between the video and end call buttons.
4. Now, you will get two options in the FaceTime menu bar drop-down menu.
- Window: Select it to share a specific window or an app with others in the FaceTime call.
- Screen: Choose it to share your entire Mac screen with the users in the FaceTime call.
5. Under the “Choose Window or Screen to Share” option in the drop-down menu, select the desired option as per your need, and you are all set. If you choose the Window option, you will need to select a specific window from the apps open in the background.
Do note that you may be prompted to click “Share This Window/ Share This Screen” options for confirmation to start broadcasting your screen, as shown in the screenshot above.
How to Change Shared Window in FaceTime on Mac
Notably, FaceTime also lets you change the shared window with ease. Simply hover the pointer over the thumbnail of the currently shared window in the FaceTime menu bar menu. Then, click on “Change Shared Window” under the “Currently Shared Window” section. After that, click the window you want to share.
How to Stop Sharing Window or Screen in FaceTime on Mac
It’s pretty simple to stop sharing your screen in FaceTime on macOS Monterey. To get it done, you simply need to click the “Stop Sharing Window/ Screen” button in the drop-down FaceTime menu bar.
Learn How to Use Screen Share in FaceTime on Mac
So that concludes our guide on how to use the screen share feature in FaceTime on macOS 12 Monterey. While there is no denying the fact that FaceTime has always been feature-rich and easy-to-use, the inclusion of a native screen-sharing feature has made Apple’s video calling app more capable. My only qualm will be Apple limiting this cool new feature to Apple device owners, leaving Android and Windows users to miss out on the fun. What’s your take on the redesigned Facetime app and its screen share feature? Do let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.

If you want to record your iPhone or iPad screen, the process is simple — whether you’re nearing the rewarding conclusion to your favorite Apple Arcade game and you want to document it, or you’re trying to walk a loved one through how to set up their new phone.
Of course, you can still take screenshots and use its tools to draw and annotate something on your screen, but there are times when a recording — complete with audio — is the better route. You’ll need to have iOS 11 or a later update installed on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, but that’s the only requirement.
Before you can begin using the screen recorder tool, you’ll first need to add the feature’s button to the Control Center. On your iOS device go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls then tap the green plus button next to Screen Recording.
The Screen Recorder button will show a countdown (here it shows “2”) after it’s selected, allowing you to go to the app or screen you want to record.
Record your screen
After adding the shortcut, you begin by opening Control Center. On iPhones older than the iPhone X ($264 at GameStop) , get there by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. On newer iPhones, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.
Tap on the Screen Recording button, which will prompt a countdown inside the button followed by it turning red to indicate to begin capturing whatever’s on your display.
You’ll know when your screen is being recorded because there will either be a red bar across the top of your screen (on older iPhones) or the time will have a red highlight behind it (on newer iPhones). Tap on the red button or bar to stop recording.
With a long-press, you can opt to turn on audio recording so you can narrate your video.
Spice up a recording with audio
What if you want to walk someone through how to use a feature or get past a bug you keep running into? Well, you can turn on your phone’s microphone and have it record for as long as a screen-recording session is active.
To turn it on, open the Control Center and long-press on the Screen Recording button. A new menu will show up, with a toggle to turn your microphone on at the bottom. Tap on the Microphone Audio button, it will turn red and then select Start Recording.
The Screen Recording button turns red when your screen is being captured.
OK, I made a recording. now what?
Once you stop recording, you’ll be asked if you want to save the video to the Photos app. Open the Photos app to view, edit, crop, and share the video through Messages, email, or even post it to your favorite social network.
Apple delivered the ability to record your screen in iOS 11 a few years ago, but iOS 15 brought even more additions. We’ll show you how to clean up your FaceTime video . And check out how to get a burner email address from Apple.

Share All sharing options for: How to record your screen on an iPhone
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge
Recording your iPhone screen can be super helpful, whether you want to save a clip of the game you’re playing, record part of a live stream on Instagram, or create a how-to video for your friends. You can send the video clip you record to a relative or friend, upload it to Twitter, or post it to your Instagram story. Here are the steps on how to record your screen, whether you have a newer or older iPhone.
Screen recording is built into iPhones, but in order to use it, you first need to check to see if the screen record button is in your Control Center. To open the Control Center, swipe down from the top-right corner if you’re using an iPhone X or later, or swipe up if you have an iPhone 8 or earlier. Check to see if you have the screen record button, which looks like a dot with a circle around it. If you don’t, here’s how you can add it:
- Open up Settings
- Tap “Control Center”
- Tap “Customize Controls”
- This is where you add and remove items from your Control Center menu. Scroll down and press the green button with a + next to “Screen Recording.” That will move it from the “More Controls” section at the bottom to the “Include” section at the top.
Record your screen
Now, you’re ready to record your screen. (Just know that there are apps that block screen recording.) To begin:
- Open up the app or website you want to record
- Swipe up to pull up the Control Center menu (iPhone 8 or earlier) or pull down the menu from the top-right corner (iPhone X or later)
- Tap the crescent moon button to switch on Do Not Disturb, which will temporarily pause calls and notifications. This is useful because when you record your screen, you’ll record everything that shows up, including notifications. If you press and hold the Do Not Disturb button, you’ll see more options, like switching the notifications off for just an hour or scheduling when you want to pause them.
- While you’re still in the Control Center, tap the screen record button to start recording. Once you hit the screen record button, a timer will start, which gives you three seconds before it starts recording. Tap the screen to hide the Control Center menu.
Now you’re set to record both the video and the audio of whatever you’re watching or listening to on your phone — however, you won’t record any audio that isn’t generated from your phone. If you want to record yourself talking (or any other external sounds) in addition to recording the audio you’re playing on your phone, you’ll have to turn your microphone on:
- Before you start recording, press and hold the screen record button. Tap the microphone button on the pop-up screen to turn the microphone on. Then tap “Start Recording.” The countdown will begin in this window. Tap anywhere on the screen to exit the screen, and then tap the next screen to close the Control Center.
- Keep in mind that once you turn the microphone on, it will stay on the next time you record your screen unless you go back in and turn it off
- To stop recording, swipe up (or down) to access the Control Center again and tap the record button again
- Unless you have media open (you’re watching a YouTube video or Instagram story, for example), you’ll see a red bar at the top of your screen (or top left if you have a newer iPhone) showing that you’re recording. If you tap on that bar, you’ll get a pop-up window asking you if you want to stop recording. Tap “Stop.”
- The video will be stored with the rest of your photos and videos in your Photos app
