Just because your SD card is spitting out file errors and gibberish file names doesn’t mean your photos are gone forever. Read on as we show you how to recover your images (and for free, at that)!

Why Do I Want Do This?

Many of our tutorials center on things that are useful or even fun but that might need a little explaining for the unfamiliar. In the case of recovering files off your corrupted SD card, there’s little sales pitch needed. You’re likely here via search engine query and panicked because you plugged in your SD card and either the files were outright missing or instead of the familiar file structure like /DCIM/ with the subsequent folders for your camera model and then the image files, you see something like this:

That screenshot, by the way, isn’t a mock up of what could happen, it’s a very unsettling look at exactly what did happen to us shortly before writing this article. Despite the fact that we know better than to physically eject the SD card from our camera before powering the camera off we do so all the time. The problem with doing something you should know better than to do is that eventually it catches up with you. Not only did that SD card contain a bunch of product photos we’d just taken for various HTG tutorials but it also had a bunch of great holiday photos we hadn’t yet properly dumped and backed up: quite the double whammy of bad luck.

Fortunately, it’s surprisingly easy to recover data from an SD card assuming the SD card isn’t outright physically destroyed. Let’s take a look at how we can recover the files easily with a free Windows tool.

What Do I Need?

While there are many ways to recover corrupted or deleted data off an SD card we’re operating off the basic assumption that readers of this tutorial are, statisically speaking, Windows users, in a bit of a panic, and definitely not data recovering experts. In light of that we’ve opted to go with a very easy to use Windows solution that we’ve had good luck with.

With that in mind let’s take a look at what you need to attempt an SD card data recovery.

First, grab a copy of ZAR X Systems recovery software. The full suite is a for-pay product but the creators of the application have graciously set up the application so that it will recover common image formats for free.

Second, you need enough free space on either your primary or secondary system drives to hold the full capacity of the SD card. This means if you’re recovering a 16GB SD card you should have 16GB of free space. (Note: if you have a huge SD card, like 64-128GB and you’re certain that it was only partially full then you can use a smaller amount of space like, say 16-32GB.)

Finally you need the misbehaving SD card on hand with an SD card reader that is known to be properly functioning (and has been tested with a non-corrupt SD card). Resist the urge to do anything to the SD card like fiddle with the files, delete or rename anything, or otherwise interact with the files or file system.

Recovering Your Files With ZAR X

ZAR X works extremely well at recovering data but some of the settings are just a wee bit arcane. We’re going to walk you through the settings with an emphasis on maximum data recovery. It’s possible you may end up with some duplicate data along the way but that’s not a bad problem to deal with: it’s far better to end up with two copies of a recovered image than no copies at all.

After you’ve installed ZAR X launch the application. You’ll see the screen below.

Select “Image Recovery (Free)”; the program will hang for a moment with the message “Enumerating Devices” as it checks for removable media and drives.

Here you can see the three drives on our test system an SSD, a HDD, and the much smaller “Mass Storage Device” that’s the size of the SD card we inserted. Once you’ve properly identified the SD card you wish to recover click “Next”.

Sit back and relax. Depending on the size of your card this can take anywhere from a good chunk of time to a huge chunk of time.

Once the file analysis is done you have the option to selectively or completely recover files. While you can always use the extra options (like file dates and min-max size) if you have the disk space to totally recover the SD card and you have no pressing reason to use any of the file filters we’d suggest doing a full recovery to ensure that every recoverable file is copied.

To that end select, as seen in the screenshot above, the “RAW” and “FAT” options. RAW will copy the raw file data and attempt to turn it back into individual files and FAT will copy the data preserving the FAT file structure. (It’s possible, depending on the SD card or USB drive you’re recovering, that the second option won’t be FAT but will be another file system name. That’s OK, select it anyway.) Click “Next” to continue.

On the final screen you’ll select a destination folder to dump all the photos into. Click “Start copying” to begin the process.

When the process is complete navigate to the destination directory you selected. Depending on which files you’re attempting to recover and how they were recovered you may find your images are in different locations. We found that half of our recovered images were in /RAW/Jpeg, which gave us a bit of a panic that we’d lost all the new ones. But in /FAT/Fragments/ we found not only the first half but the complete set in numerically ordered folders. When it was all said and done we were able to perform a complete recovery of the SD card with no loss of personal or work-related photos.

There are few things more soul-crushing than losing that last photo of grandma, or videos of your child’s first steps. But SD cards can be fussy, and occasionally those photos get corrupted or accidentally deleted. And it’s not quite possible to recreate those photos after the moment’s passed.

The good news is that if you still have that SD card, you still have hope.

How file recovery works

This may come as a shock to you, but when you delete a file from an SD card (or hard drive, or flash drive) that data isn’t erased right away—instead, your computer just marks that space as available for re-writing. Even though you can’t see the files, they’re still there until your camera (or computer) overwrites them with something else. That means that if you haven’t taken too many new photos, you might be able to get those old ones back.

So if you lost or accidentally deleted files off an SD card, the first thing you must do is stop using it. Don’t take any more pictures—remove it from your camera and set it aside. If you keep snapping away, you might overwrite the photos you’ve lost, and then you really won’t be able to get them back.

Be ready to pay a little money if things get tough. We’ll go through two free SD card recovery programs here, but if they can’t find what you’re looking for, it may be worth trying a paid option instead—sometimes one program can root out files that others missed. You’re not going at it blind, though—most paid programs will let you scan the drive for free, at which point you can pony up to actually recover the files. A few bucks is usually a small price to pay for those irreplaceable family photos.

Windows: Recover your files with Recuva

Recuva is a free tool that can be a little finicky, but it’s a good place to start. Install Recuva like you would any other Windows program and start it up. If, for some reason, it doesn’t launch, it may be conflicting with a driver on your PC or an antivirus program—this is a somewhat common issue, and I was able to get it to launch by booting into Safe Mode. (Just hold Shift while restarting the computer, head to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings, and restart into Safe Mode with Networking.) I also had to plug my SD card in using a USB card reader, rather than my laptop’s built-in SD card slot, though your mileage may vary.

Recuva’s Wizard will attempt to make the scan a bit speedier by asking you what you’re looking for. The first time you go through, I recommend choosing Pictures on My Media Card or iPod, but you can choose All Files from All Drives if you prefer to catch everything humanly possible—it’ll just take longer.

Recuva will then present you with a list of files it found. In my case, it found about 13 deleted photos I’d taken for work a couple years ago, and I was able to recover all but one of them (which had probably been partially overwritten with new data at some point). If the software found a lot of files, note that checking each box can be a tedious task, so I recommend selecting the first photo, holding Shift, then selecting the last photo to highlight them all. Then, right-click on a photo and choose Check Highlighted to mark every photo for recovery. Click the Recover button to find a place for them on your computer’s hard drive. Do not recover them to the SD card, or you may overwrite the files before they can be recovered.

If you don’t find everything the first time, try re-running Recuva and doing a Deep Scan—it’ll take longer, but you might get lucky. When I ran a deep scan, Recuva found about 35 photos from years ago that it didn’t find in the initial scan.

Mac: Recover your files with LazeSoft Mac Data Recovery

If you’re a Mac user, I recommend starting with a freeware program called LazeSoft Mac Data Recovery. It isn’t pretty, but it’s completely free, and worked remarkably well in my tests. Install the program as you would any other, then start it up and select either a Fast Scan or a Deep Scan. (A deep scan will find more, but will take longer.) Select your SD card when prompted, and let it do its thing.

When LazeSoft is done scanning, you’ll have a list of folders in the left sidebar you can browse through. It doesn’t show thumbnails, so it can take some time to find the photos you’re looking for. Once you do, you can check them off and click on Save Files along the top to recover them to your hard drive. Again, remember not to recover them to the SD card, or you may overwrite the files before they can be recovered. Be sure to check through all the folders in the sidebar to make sure you catch every photo that’s available for recovery.

What to do if you don’t find what you’re looking for

Here’s the thing: The above programs are great first efforts, but they’re free for a reason. If you aren’t finding everything you want to recover, it’s time to try something a bit heftier, like Disk Drill Pro ($89, for Windows and Mac, including the latest Big Sur OS), EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard ($70 per month or $100 per year, for Windows; $90 per month or $120 per year, for Mac), or Ontrack EasyRecovery ($79 per year, for Windows and Mac). When I tested these programs, I found 200 photos—a far cry from the 51 found in Recuva’s deep scan—plus a couple of videos, taken so long ago I barely remembered them. All three options will scan your drive for free, but will only recover between 500MB and 1GB of data before you have to pay. Honestly, that’s a pretty good deal. Try one or all of them before you pony up to make sure you get the maximum amount of recovered photos possible.

If they still can’t do the trick, you may be out of luck. But if those lost photos are incredibly important to you, a data recovery service like DriveSavers or LC Technology may be able to recover files that consumer-level software can’t—at a cost of hundreds or even over a thousand dollars. So you’ll have to decide if recovering those photos is actually worth potentially spending that amount of money.

Whether you’re able to recover your photos or not, remember that the story doesn’t end here—you’ll also want to do everything in your power from preventing this in the future. Copy your photos to your PC early and often, properly eject your SD card before removing it from your PC, and have a good backup strategy in place, so those memories never disappear.

Plain and simple this works and worth the $40. I was using my Nikon S9100 Coolpix for the first time while on vacation. Over the course of the week, I took about 100 photos. I had viewed them on the camera and deleted the ones I didn’t like. I used a new card reader for the first time. After copying Canon camera folders one at a time, each with 100 pictures, I hit one folder that threw an “invalid parameter” error and the copying stopped. Looking at the SD card (a Patriot 2GB SD) I saw many garbage files and folders, all with special character files names. It seemed most old pictures were trashed, but luckily the most recent photos were OK (but I wondered what I lost). I thought perhaps it was me opening the folders in thumbnail view that caused the problem, as Windows was writing the thumb.db file.

Stupidly I went to copy my brother’s SD card (a PNY 4GB SD HC), but this time I did not open the picture folder, I just bulk-copied the whole card. After a while, the same invalid parameter error was thrown, with the same results. Only this time older pictures (previously backed up) from the card were OK, and the newest photos trashed. In fact about half the photos from our recent trip were gone. I was devastated. In fact I could hardly even sleep that night I felt so bad. The next morning I awoke, prepared to scour the Internet for a file recovery application.

I tried a few other programs (I’ll be happy to provide the names if you want) but none of them worked. In fact none found ANY lost pictures.

A friend turned up today with a curly question. She’d been using a SD card in her point and shoot camera for some time and now the card had stopped functioning. If she put it in her computer she was told to format the disk to use it – sensibly she didn’t do this. However, she was sure she’d lost the shots she’d taken on her recent vacation.

She took the card to a camera store and was quoted $25 to look at the card and then $15 for every 25 pictures recovered from it. Even though she only wanted the most recent images – some 30 or so – she’d have to pay for all the images they recovered. As she had over 1,000 images on the card – the math wasn’t pretty – over $600 to get her images. The shop owner explained the process was time consuming and complex – hence the cost.

For my friend, the thirty or so photos just didn’t justify the expense. Luckily she called by to ask if she should she simply put the disk in the trash or was there an alternative? I grabbed the disk and sent her to get coffee – before she got back I had her images off the damage disk and burned to a DVD.

Here’s what I did:

The program I used is called Zero Assumption Recovery or ZAR. You can find it at I opted for this program because it allows you to recover digital pictures from digital camera memory free of charge – for other uses it is a for fee program.

Start out by downloading an installing the ZAR Recovery software. Insert the damaged disk in the card reader and launch the software. When prompted that antivirus software may impact performance, click to accept the warning and go and disable your antivirus software.

When prompted, click the Image Recovery (Free) option.

The program looks for devices that are installed. This is probably the most confusing portion of the exercise because you’ll need to identify which of the devices in the list is your camera card. It’s not really that difficult and, in my case, Disk 4 shows as an SD card with 1,876 MB of data on it – pretty clearly it is the SD card. Select the disk and click Next.

Wait as the program analyzes the disk. You’ll see a list of the recovered files. In my case I wanted all of them because not only did I not know which images she wanted but this dialog really isn’t the place to start getting fussy about which images you want and which you don’t – it’s simplest to take them all. So click the Root checkbox to select all the images.

Click Next and you can then select the folder into which the recovered files will be placed. Because I selected the Root folder on the SD card these images will all go automatically into a subfolder called Root. Make sure you always recover files onto a disk other than the one they came from – it sounds self-evident but the busted SD card is not the place to put the recovered images.

I left all the options set to their defaults and simply clicked Start Copying the Selected Files. The software copied 1099 files to my hard drive in a few minutes.

Open the folder in Windows Explorer and set it to view thumbnails to see what you have. I found a handful of images were unreadable and a few images were only half full of data with half the image missing but well over 1000 of the files were there and most of those my friend remembers taking on her vacation.

The moral of this post is to never throw out a camera card until you’ve tried to recover the data from it. There is good and free software out there that can do the recovery for you and it isn’t difficult or time-consuming to attempt it yourself. Oh! and don’t format a card if it has images on it that you want to download – even if your computer prompts you to do so – it’s not being helpful and the results might reduce your chance of recovering your images.

I have a 4GB SD card with some family pictures on it that I need to recover. When I insert the card into my card reader, it shows up as an unknown 32MB device (as /dev/sde ) and cannot be mounted. When inserting back into the camera (a Nikon D60), it says the cards needs to be formatted (as does inserting it into a Windows machine). I want to recover all of the pictures on the card (there were others before the family pictures) because I don’t know how many I took or their exact sizes (but I believe they were all JPEGs). The card should be formatted as a FAT32 filesystem.

What Linux or Unix utilities are available to recover the files? Can I do it myself or do I need to seek professional help?

Edit: It appears that my card reader has damaged the card in some way, making it unreadable and and unformattable. When I checked another card that was the exact same (save for no files), it “ruined” the second one. I would like to use the second card again, so is there a tool to format a damaged card that doesn’t know (or cannot report properly) how large it is?

First, from your experience with the second card, it seems that your reader is damaged and now damages the cards you insert into it. Stop using that reader immediately, and try to recover the card with another reader. If your data is at all valuable, try to get a brand-name reader with better quality than a bottom-price one.

If the card is merely partly unreadable and not completely unreadable, first try to copy what you can from the card to an image file. Don’t use dd for this as it’ll stop reading on the first error. Use tools such as dd_rescue or ddrescue . Both tools try to grab as much data as possible from the disk. Example usage ( /dev/sdc being the device corresponding to the card; if you don’t know which one it is, run cat /proc/partitions and pick the one that seems to have the right size):

Since it looks like the filesystem structure is damaged (your OSes offer to format the drive because they don’t see a valid filesystem on it), you’ll have to try to recover the files individually. Fortunately, image files start with a recognizable header, and there are many existing carving tools that recognize images: Foremost, MagicRescue, PhotoRec (from the makers of TestDisk), RecoverJPEG, …

Most of these tools are available on typical unix distributions. But if you prefer, you can run a special-purpose distribution or other live CD including recovery tools such as SysRescueCD, Knoppix, CAINE…

Step 2: Install and launch Recoverit

When the setup file is downloaded, simply open it and click on the “Install” button to get things started. Follow a basic click-through process to complete the installation and launch Recoverit on your computer.

Step 3: Connect your SD card

Carefully, unmount your SD card from your digital camera or camcorder and connect it to your system. If your computer doesn’t have an inbuilt card reader, then use a dedicated card reader unit to connect it. As soon as it is detected, you will be notified by the system.

Step 4: Select your SD card as a source location

Once you launch the Recoverit data recovery application on your computer, you can view different location options on its home page. My brother’s 8 GB SD card became unreadable/damaged as it was removed while there was read/write access to it.

From about 500 pictures of the last holiday only 20 were readable. When opening the other ones, the following errors came up:

• Decode error! JPEG datastream contains no image!
• Can’t open this picture because the file appears to be damaged, corrupted, or is too large

We tried checkdisk (chkdsk /F and chkdsk /r) and a lot of other free available data restore/recovery tools.

Most of them were not really free and you had to pay before you really knew if they can help you.

Finally I found a tool that helped us to restore all the photos (or nearly all… only ten out of 500 were definitely lost or garbled).

The name of the tool is Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery (ZAR).

Generally the software is not free of charge, but the digital image recovery function of ZAR is available at no charge. And this function is the one we need 🙂

After installation, open ZAR and select Image Recovery (Free):

But it is worth to wait – because now you are only one step away to (hopefully) restore your data.

I know this is not specifically a photography issue but since many of us with prosumer/professional-level DLSRs use Compact Flash cards, it is bound to happen to others as well.

I have a Sandisk 16GB Ultra card that occasionally had the camera reporting inability to access the card. I had to reinsert the card to continue using it. I was able to read the card and transfer the photo files to my computer drive. Today, the same thing happened again, just that nearing the capacity of the card, it failed one last time and the camera was subsequently unable to read it anymore. Despite reinsertion.

My other CF cards never once exhibited this problem, so it’s pretty much isolated to this card.

The card is similarly unrecognisable on my computer CF card reader. I think the filesystem is toast, but I suspect the photo files are still intact. I would like to find ways where I can inspect the raw binary data in the card and hopefully recover the photos?

There are two utilities from CGSecurity that might help.

• TestDisk – Allows direct access to disk data and file recovery from corrupt partition tables.
• PhotoRec – Specifically targeted at recovering photos by identifying byte patterns in images (& video) files.

Depending on what has caused your card to fail will depend on which of these tools will work best.

You can use TestDisk to do a raw backup of the card first to prevent further damage by using recovery tools incorrectly.

Can you distinguish if it’s the card that is inaccessible, or just it’s filesystem? I know in Linux, you can access the raw device and try to get you data out of that (which should be possible, since it’s usually just sequentially stored JPEG files).

On Windows and Mac, you can try recovery software recommended by SanDisk, demo version which shows you what it can rescue is avaiable here: (see also SanDisk FAQ entry about that).

If you can’t see the raw hardware then I guess your only chance is to try some data recovery service to tear the card apart and attempt to get you data from the flash chips.

If you are able to get to the card at all, you could try using Recuva from Piriform, Inc. It is a free download, and I have used it to get back files that were accidentally deleted.

One of the features listed is:

Recovery from damaged or formatted disks

Even if you’ve formatted a drive so that it looks blank, Recuva can still find your files on it.

As Simon wrote, photorec is a good tool to recover lost data, not only image files. I the past I recover jpg files with success, but it used signatures to find the files, and I don’t know if it has signatures for raw files.

Just a tip, first copy the content of the card with dd and the used photorec with the image created by dd. By making this one-time copy, you avoid making more damage to the card.

If photorec doesn’t recognize raw files, see if you have any luck with other tools, as example: Foremost.

I’m currently in the process of using ddrescue to recover photos from a corrupt CF card (I believe hardware failure).

The problem I have is not only parts of the filesystem/files being unreadable, but when I attempt to read a specific part of the CF card, the disk stops responding entirely, which makes it quite difficult to import files off it.

I imagine this might be a pretty special case, but in any case I’ve been able to piece most of the disk back together with ddrescue , using the -i option to skip the chunk where it fails, and otherwise read the sectors that work, to generate a new disk image file to use with PhotoRec.

If the CF card wasn’t having such serious failures, I think it’d be possible with PhotoRec alone, as others have suggested.

ddrescue’s main utility seems to be the way it lets you get as much of a disk as is available, and use various techniques (e.g. retries, which can be good on magnetic/optical disks) to fill in the gaps. You can keep re-running it to build up an image of the disk from whatever is readable with the various techniques. And it automatically works out how much it can actually read successfully between the failed/damaged sectors.

You can try using chkdsk first to recover partition. I am assuming your card is FAT32 formatted. You can use following command on Windows Command Prompt (cmd):

Please note that you should write your memory card drive name instead of g:

After chkdsk is completed and your drive is visible again, you should be able to recover your files.

If you cannot see your image files but can access to the memory card, you can use the software Recuva to rescue your image files.

“The card is similarly unrecognisable on my computer CF card reader.”

Basically for software to work, the card has to be detected in Windows Disk Management with correct capacity.

Verify with a different reader, if card still isn’t recognized then in general this can’t be recovered using software. If I am asked to handle a case like that I:

Open the ‘case’ and inspect the PCB using multimeter and microscope. If I can spot defects I’ll try repairing them, and if successful I can now access the card. Some times it’s enough to reflow the solder under the NAND chips. If a working and matching donor board is available, often NAND chips can be transferred to donor PCB.

If unable to repair I unsolder NAND chips and ‘dump’ them using a reader. Using specialized software I then convert the dump to a logical file system using software that emulates the controller (or tries as good as it can) from which files can be recovered. Ideally result is a coherent file system, however sometimes raw recovery is highest achievable. It’s the logical image reconstruction part that is most complex and time consuming.

NAND readers are not overly expensive (but still too for a single case probably), it’s the software that is needed to convert the raw dump to a logical image that is. I use the Soft Center reader and software (called Flash Extractor).

With regards to logical photo recovery software, often mentioned names are PhotoRec and Recuva, also free and very good is R-Photo made by the company that produces R-Studio which is used in many labs for logical data recovery.

If card (whatever card, CF, SD etc.) is detected but physical capacity is incorrect:

In these cases dumping the NAND is almost always required. Typically physical capacity is decreased to MBs rather than GBs. It’s an indication controller is working but in let’s call it a safe mode. It is either unable to detect the NAND memory -or- NAND translation table is corrupt. See this translation table as a ‘FAT’ for the firmware, only this table is used by firmware to map LBA addresses to actual NAND pages.

“Oh! I can’t see my pictures saved on my SD card. I tried connecting it multiple times but I failed”. If you too have recently encountered an issue with your SD card and the data within, don’t despair. This is one of the many common issues and you can troubleshoot the issue to recover photos from the SD card.

When you are unable to load images saved on an SD card on your computer, there are two issues that come into limelight. One, maybe your computer is not able to read the format of the image files or your SD card is not showing up at all. Also, many times, as you insert an SD card it shows you a blank SD card and asks you to format.
