Expired passes

Some limited or single-use passes, such as boarding passes or event tickets, will be automatically hidden after they’ve expired. These passes are moved to a separate list where you can view, unhide or delete them:

  • Unhiding a pass returns it to the main view of the Wallet app.
  • Deleting a pass permanently removes it.

You are going to open the Wallet application on your iPhone so that you can delete a card or pass that you wanted to get rid of, only the button to remove the card is nowhere to be found. Apple made this a bit fiddly, but it’s easy once you figure it out.

Six Apple Wallet Features You May Not Know About

There are a few different ways to open the Wallet app: from the lock screen (if you have that method enabled), from the Control Center, or from the home screen. However, it turns out that only one of those ways allows you to remove cards and passes.

Simply put, to remove a card or pass from the Wallet app, you have to open the application from the home screen. Opening Wallet from the lock screen or Control Center will not allow you to remove cards for security reasons.

There are a couple of ways to remove cards and passes from the Wallet.

Delete individual cards or wallet passes

To get started, find the Wallet app on your home screen and tap on it to open the app.

Select the card you want to delete.

Tap the little ellipsis button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Tap “Delete Pass” at the bottom.

A pop-up window will appear confirming this action. Touch “Delete” to finish it.

You would also perform the same steps to remove a credit or debit card from Wallet; you just need to tap “Remove Card” instead of “Remove Pass”.

Mass delete wallet passes

If you want to delete more than one pass from Wallet, you can still use the above method, but there is a faster way to delete multiple cards quickly and easily. However, this will only work with passes (not with credit or debit cards).

Open the Wallet app and scroll to the bottom. Touch the “Edit Passes” button.

Tap the round red button next to the pass you want to delete.

Tap on “Delete” to delete it.

Of course, you can also use this method if you want to remove an individual pass, but it is the way to go if you have more than one pass that you want to remove from the app.

There’s a good chance that you’ve forgotten about this app. It used to be known as Passbook, and it’s an app may iOS users forget about. If you look into all the apps you have on your iOS device, you’ll find it sooner or later. Every app has a right to be used, and Wallet is no different. Some may not bother with the app because they may not know how to use it and aren’t aware of what it can do for you. Hopefully, by the time you’re done reading, you’ll know how to use and add passes in Wallet app on iPhone.

Add Passes in Wallet App

1. Add a Pass by Scanning a Code

In the app’s welcome screen one an option you have to add a pass. All you have to do is tap on the Scan code link at the bottom. The only drawback is that it’s not compatible with every barcode you may want to use.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

But, that’s not a problem since that can easily be fixed by installing the Pss2U Wallet ( a Free app). It will give you access to unsupported barcodes and make the app fun again.

2. Add Passes in Wallet from a Pass File

Last but not least you have the option of adding a pass from a Pass file. For example, whenever you book a flight you always get an Email with all your information. Look for that Email and see if the Email has an attachment with a .PKPASS extension.

If you see it, tap it to download it. You should see a preview of the pass and there should also be an Add button as well. This is also possible on Android but you’re going to need an app like passbook.

3. Add a Pass from a Supported App

If the first option doesn’t convince you can try an app. Another option you’re going to find on the app’s welcome screen is an option to find Apps for Wallet.

Choose the one you want to install and search for the ¨add to wallet¨ option it will have. If you can’t find it be patient, it’s there somewhere. The location is going to depend on what app you use.

Tap where it says to add and you should now see the information appear in your Wallet. It will ask you to confirm your request.

4. Arrange Your Passes in Order of Use

The app will arrange your passes in the order to added them but sometimes it’s better to have them in order of use. That way the one you need at the moment will always be right there.

You can do this by tapping, holding and dropping the pass in the right location. If you notice that you can’t drag the pass, hold your finger on the pass for a few seconds and then drag it.

How to Delete, View and Share a Pass

If you want to see the details of the pass tap on it and tap again to return it to the stack. To see all the information on the pass make sure you have it full view. To get extra information on your pass tap on the i at the bottom.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

You don’t have to go very far to share your pass since the option is also in the information section. Tap on the Share Pass and choose how you want to share it.

Right below the sharing option is the Delete Pass option. The passes won’t be deleted automatically, so to avoid clutter it’s a good idea to erase ay passes you know you don’t need anymore.

Get Quick Access to Your Wallet

By double-tapping on the home button, you can get access to your wallet. This feature isn’t on by default so you’re going to have to enable it. You can do this by going to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay and toggling it on.

If it’s not there, you can try Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked. Another way to get access to your wallet is by swiping left to right on a pass on your Lock screen.

Conclusion

As you can see that this is one very useful app. Why many overlook it is a mystery to me but it’s definitely worth a try. It will help you stay on top of things and organized.

So, if the last thing you want to do is install another app, this one is already on your iOS device anyway. Do you think that you’ll give it a try? Share your thoughts in the comments.

For some people, the Wallet app in iOS might be synonymous with Apple Pay — something you only see briefly after double-tapping the home button. For the experienced though, it’s also a way of keeping passes handy without stuffing paper copies in your pocket.

There are a variety of ways to add passes, including Wallet-ready apps, scanning a code, or even tapping an iOS notification after using Apple Pay at a store. Often, however, you’ll be tapping on an “Add to Apple Wallet” icon, whether on a webpage or in an email, such as a receipt for concert tickets. Be sure to do this from your iPhone to make it work.

After confirming that you want to add an item, it should show up in Wallet automatically. Tapping on a pass there will bring up details and make it ready for use, including any QR or barcodes that need to be scanned at a merchant, station, or venue. In some cases, simply appearing at the right location will trigger a lock screen notification you can swipe to jump into the appropriate pass.

You can swipe down on a pass to go back to the main screen, or swipe left and right if there are multiple items associated with the same event, like a ticket for your spouse.

Each pass may also include a link to a relevant app in the lower-left, but will always include an “Information” button in the lower-right. Here you can do things like toggle lock screen notifications and automatic content updates.

More importantly though, this is the only way to remove a pass, as even time-sensitive ones will clutter up Wallet long after their expiry date. It’s worth coming back to the app periodically to clean things up if you become a regular user.

I am an avid user of this feature. It is incredibly handy. I have used it to store my boarding passes with many airlines, hotel reservations, loyalty cards, etc. Lots of international airlines are still not using it as I experienced it during my recent trip overseas, but they are getting there. The wallet would be even more handy if it did following

  • Support storing digital identification such as Driver licenses, club membership cards, etc.
  • Ability to create digital passes of anything, so I can store it in my wallet
  • Search capability (though I do love the location based function today)
  • Chronologically ordered for passes with event dates

I wish there was a way to automatically expire a ticket, such as a boarding pass or a movie ticket. If you want to access it after it expired, just visit your History.

Have you wondered what you can do with the Wallet app on your iPhone? Although it started out life called Passbook, Apple soon realized that the only sensible name was Wallet. That’s because it stores digital versions of roughly the same sort of things you might put in a physical wallet: credit and debit cards, store cards, membership cards, and even cash (well, Apple Pay Cash, anyway).

Nearly all airlines can put your boarding passes in Wallet, too, and if you buy something like a concert ticket online, you may be able to add it to Wallet by tapping the “Add to Apple Wallet” button in the confirmation page or email. Having a boarding pass or ticket, which Apple calls a pass, in Wallet makes it easy to scan for a gate attendant.

Here’s how to use cards and passes in Wallet.

Display Your Cards and Passes

The main Wallet screen shows your cards and passes in a scrollable list, with credit/debit cards at the top. (If you’ve set up Apple Pay Cash, it’s treated as a debit card.)

To view more details about a card or pass, tap it.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

In the case of a credit/debit card, you see the face of the card and a list of its recent Apple Pay transactions.

For boarding passes for multi-flight trips, you see a single pass in the main list, but after you tap it, you can swipe horizontally to display the pass for each leg of the trip.

Membership cards, such as the ChargePoint card, may work like credit/debit cards in that you need to hold them near a reader to sign in.

In each case, to access settings related to the card or pass, tap the black ••• button at the upper right.

Adding and Using Credit and Debit Cards

Adding a credit/debit card so it can work with Apple Pay starts with tapping the black + button at the upper right of the Wallet screen. From there, follow the prompts—you can scan your card with the camera instead of keying in the data.

If you add more than one card, you’ll want to specify which should be the default for Apple Pay. Go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay. Scroll down to Transaction Defaults, and tap Default Card. Tap the desired card. In Wallet, the default card appears with its full face showing, below your other credit/debit cards.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

To pay for a purchase with a stored credit/debit card at a payment terminal, put your iPhone right next to the terminal. The iPhone may automatically prompt you to authenticate Apple Pay, but if not, double-click the Home button or, with the iPhone X, XR, XS, or XS Max, double-click the side button. Wallet displays your default card. To authenticate, rest your finger on the Home button or, with the iPhone X models, authenticate with Face ID. To use a non-default card, tap the card pile at the bottom of the screen and then tap the desired card.

Adding and Using Airplane Boarding Passes and Event Tickets

For flights, when you check in and get boarding passes using the airline’s iPhone app, you’ll be given the opportunity to tap an Add to Apple Wallet button. Do that and the boarding pass appears in Wallet, which will also display a notification for it on the Lock screen in the hours before your flight. When you need to show the boarding pass to security or the gate attendant, tap that notification to display the boarding pass with its QR code.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

For events, the ticket-seller may display the Add to Apple Wallet button on the confirmation page of the checkout process or attach the tickets to your email receipt. In the latter case, open the message in Mail and tap the attachment to open it, and then tap Add to put it into Wallet. Later, when you arrive at the venue, open Wallet and display the ticket—again with a QR code—to gain entry.

Deleting Cards and Passes

Although you may want to keep some digital tickets for nostalgic reasons, it’s best to clean out old items:

  • To delete a credit/debit card, tap the card to view it and then tap the black ••• button. Scroll down and tap Remove This Card.
  • To remove a pass, go to the bottom of the main Wallet screen and tap Edit Passes. Tap the red delete button for that item, tap the next Delete or Delete All button, and then tap Done at the upper right.

Using Wallet makes it easier to keep your physical wallet slimmer. It can take a few minutes to add your cards and passes initially, but it’s worth the effort.

You’re probably already aware that iOS 15.1 lets you add a digital proof-of-vaccination card to Apple Wallet for quick and easy access, but with many public health agencies now offering additional “booster” shots of COVID-19 vaccines, you may be wondering how to get that third shot to show up on your card.

Many local health authorities are requiring folks to show proof that they’ve received a COVID-19 vaccination before entering certain venues, and the ability to add the card to Apple Wallet is a really convenient way to do it — assuming of course that the public health agency in your state, province, or country is issuing these cards using the SMART Health Card standard. Fortunately, most are.

To be clear, you may not technically need to have that third shot listed on your proof-of-vaccination card — at least not yet — but it also doesn’t hurt to be thorough, and the good news is that iOS 15 makes it pretty easy to update your proof of vaccination.

It’s important to know that this is a manual process, however. Your COVID-19 Vaccination Card in Apple Wallet will not update automatically when you get additional doses of the vaccine.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

Instead, you will need to go back to the QR code-based proof of vaccination certificate issued after your third shot, which actually contains a new QR code.

Apple’s COVID-19 Vaccination Cards do not have a direct connection to public health databases. The SMART Health Card QR code is a standalone code that contains all of your relevant vaccination information directly in the code itself, along with a digital signature that confirms it authenticity.

How to Update Your COVID-19 Vaccination Card

Technically speaking, Apple doesn’t provide any way to update your existing COVID-19 Vaccination Card, so what you’ll actually be doing is adding an entirely new card, based on the new QR code issued by your public health agency.

We previously shared details on how to add your COVID-19 Vaccination Card to Apple Wallet, and you’ll be happy to know that you can follow the same procedure to add the updated COVID-19 Vaccination Card.

  1. Obtain the QR code for your latest vaccination record from your local public health agency. This can be in printed form or displayed on another screen such as an iPad, Mac, or Windows PC.
  2. Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
  3. Confirm the rear-facing camera is selected, and point it toward the QR code.
  4. Center the QR code in your viewfinder, and you should see yellow brackets appear around it, with a yellow button below it that says, “COVID-19 Vaccination.”
  5. Tap the COVID-19 Vaccination button. A screen will appear prompting you to add the vaccination record to the Health app and Apple Wallet. This will also show you all the vaccinations that are embedded in the QR code record.
  6. Tap Add to Wallet & Health to add the new COVID-19 vaccination information.

You can also do this entirely on the iPhone using Live Text if you don’t have a printed version of the QR code, or a second screen to display it on.

The new three-dose card can be used as a replacement for any older two-dose version you’ve added previously. However, it’s important to note that iOS 15 adds a new card — it doesn’t update the old one, nor does it remove it automatically.

In other words, you’ll end up with two COVID-19 Vaccination Cards in your Wallet app. To avoid confusion, we recommend removing the older card manually. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Wallet app.
  2. Locate and tap on your “Vaccination Card” to open it.
  3. Swipe left or right to scroll through all the Vaccination Cards in your Wallet.
  4. Locate the older card. You’ll be able to identify it as it will list fewer doses.
  5. Tap on the “More” button in the top-right corner (the one with three dots inside a circle). This will open the full details of the selected Vaccination Card.
  6. Confirm that this is the older card by checking the “Issued” date at the bottom.
  7. Tap Remove Pass to remove the old card from Apple Wallet.

Note that this only removes the pass from Apple Wallet. The Health app will still include the duplicate immunization records. You can go and clean that up too if you really want to — it’s under Immunizaitons in the Health Records section of the Health app — but you don’t need to worry about that as much. It’s more important to get the older Vaccination Card out of the way in Apple Wallet, both to keep things less cluttered and avoid mistakenly pulling up the incorrect one.

As this process shows, you can store multiple Vaccination Cards in Apple Wallet, and many people don’t realize that you can keep Vaccination Cards for family members on your iPhone as well, which can be useful when you’re accompanying partners, children, or elderly parents who don’t have their own digital devices. Just add these additional cards in the same way, using the QR code certificates for others.

Adding a COVID-19 Vaccination Card to Apple Wallet on your iPhone also automatically adds it to your Apple Watch, so you’ll have the new version on your wearable right away as well. Sadly, this isn’t available to an Apple Watch using Family Setup, as the Wallet app in this case is limited to Apple Cash and Express Transit cards.

With iOS 15.5, Apple now allows you to store your Apple Account Card In Wallet.

The iPhone’s operating system is constantly updated by Apple throughout the year in what are known as point updates by some. For example, whereas iOS 15.0 is the major release of the new operating system, iOS 15.1 is a more minor release. However, these minor releases often add new features to you iPhone.

With the release of iOS 15.5, Apple has added a new type of card you can add to the iPhone’s Wallet app. It’s called the Apple Account Card. Here’s everything you need to know about it…

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

What Is The Apple Account Card?

The new Apple Account Card is another digital card than can live in your iPhone’s Wallet app. If you add it, it will show up as a white card with a blue Apple logo on it, and in the corner, it will read “Apple Account”.

The Apple Account Card isn’t a card you have to apply for. You have the option of creating an Apple Account Card if you have an Apple ID, which you will if you own an iPhone and download apps from the App Store (or content from any of Apple’s digital goods stores).

The Apple Account Card reflects your Apple ID account balance. An Apple ID account balance is a credit on your Appel account that lets you buy content from any of Apple’s digital stores. Account balances are shown in U.S. dollars (if you live in the U.S.).

To add money to your Apple ID account balance, you need to load an Apple gift card to your Apple ID. You can buy Apple gift cards yourself or, more frequently, people are given them as gifts. When you enter that code on the back of the gift card into your Apple account, the gift card’s amount will be added to your Apple ID account total.

That Apple ID account total will then be reflected on your Apple Account Card in the Wallet app on your iPhone.

How Is The Apple Account Card Different From The Apple Card?

The Apple Account Card differs from the Apple Card in that the Apple Account Card is not a credit card and you don’t have to apply for it. And no matter how much money you have on your Apple Account Card it doesn’t impact (or even show on) your credit report.

Your Apple Account Card also can’t have a negative balance.

The Apple Card, on the other hand, is a traditional credit card you need to apply for.

What Is The iPhone Wallet App?

The Wallet app is a built-in app on your iPhone. It allows you to store digital versions of credit and debit cards, tickets, passes, and even driver’s licenses. The Wallet app now also allows you to store your Apple Account Card.

Where Can I use the Apple Account card?

The Apple Account Card can only be used with Apple. Whenever you buy something from Apple’s Movies, Music, Books, Podcasts, or other digital stores, your Apple ID account credit will be used, thus you will see a reduction of the amount your Apple Account Card currently has on it.

However, you can also use the Apple Account Card in physical Apple Stores and use its balance towards anything you want to buy in an Apple Store.

How To Add Apple Account Card To iPhone Wallet App

Adding the Apple Account Card to the iPhone’s Wallet app is pretty easy. To do this, though, you’ll need to make sure you are running iOS 15.5 or above. If you are, follow these steps to add the Apple Account Card to the Wallet app:

    1. Open the Wallet app.
    2. Tap the + button.
    3. In the “Add to Wallet” screen that appears, tap Add Apple Account.
    4. On the next screen, tap Continue.

And that’s it! Your Apple Account Card will now be added to your Wallet app on your iPhone.

Learn the essentials of offering passes in Wallet, such as distribution, updates, and best practices.

    How it works

The Wallet app on iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple Watch allows users to easily manage payment cards, boarding passes, tickets, gift cards, and other passes. Wallet is time and location enabled, so passes can be configured to display on the user’s device at the appropriate moment, like when the user reaches the airport or walks into a store. Passes can also be updated with push notifications so, if details change, you can notify the user and they can simply tap the notification to view the updated pass.

Passes are distributed in an app, via email, or on the web.

User adds pass to the Wallet app on their device.

Passes can automatically appear on a user’s device based on location and time.

User holds their device near a NFC reader or scans a barcode on the pass.

Pass can now be used to check in to an event, redeem rewards or coupons, and more.

    Designing passes

When creating a pass, you’ll choose a style — boarding pass, coupon, event ticket, store card, or a generic pass for membership cards or claim tickets. The style automatically determines how the pass looks and the details it shows, including the time window and location radius relevance. The relevant time for a boarding pass is quite different from a movie ticket, so it’s important to choose the correct style.

Make sure your passes are clear and optimized, and look great on all devices. For details on design best practices, see the Human Interface Guidelines.

    Developing passes

Use the PassKit framework to create, distribute, and update passes for the Wallet app. To learn more, see the PassKit documentation.

    Signing passes

In order to be recognized by Wallet, passes must be signed with an Apple-issued certificate associated with your Apple developer account. These passes can only be accessed by apps that are developed by your team and have the appropriate entitlements. Request and download certificates for Apple Wallet from Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles.

If your certificate expires, passes that are already installed on users’ devices will continue to function normally. However, you will no longer be able to sign new passes or send updates to existing passes. If your certificate is revoked, your passes will no longer function properly.

    Distributing and updating passes

Getting passes into Wallet is easy. You can distribute them in your app, via email, or on the web. Users can add a pass without installing the related app, or add a pass that doesn’t have a related app at all. If there is an app, and the user does not currently have the app installed, they can install it directly from the pass. iCloud pushes passes to all of a user’s devices.

The Add to Wallet badge is recommended for use anywhere you distribute your pass to give users a branded, visual cue to add the pass to Wallet with a tap or click. Use the PassKit API to implement the badge in your app to ensure the badge is always styled correctly and localized based on the user’s language settings. For web, email, and print, use the Add to Wallet badge.

Passes can be updated by using push notifications or the pull-to-refresh gesture on the back of a pass, so you can easily notify the user of important updates, like when a gate changes at the airport or a gift card balance adjusts.

    Accepting passes

Users can use passes in Wallet on iPhone, iPod touch, or Apple Watch. Passes can display on the Lock Screen at the right time, like when the user reaches the airport or walks into a store.

    Near Field Communication

Passes can work with Near Field Communication (NFC) readers for contactless redemption. Users hold their device near a reader with contactless symbol to use a pass, with no need for a barcode. If you’re developing an NFC-enabled pass to use with Apple Pay, you’ll need to request an NFC certificate.

    Barcodes

Passes can contain barcodes that are scanned in order to obtain information stored in the pass. Wallet supports 2D barcodes using QR, Aztec, and PDF417 formats. Wallet optimizes the presentation of passes in order to facilitate a successful scan. For example, the screen’s orientation locks to portrait and the backlight is temporarily boosted to the brightest setting. However, it’s still important to test your passes with the hardware you expect to use for scanning. An optical scanner works better for scanning an iPhone screen than a laser scanner. For more details on using barcodes, see the Add to Apple Wallet Guidelines.

Passes can also display text below the barcode to show the user’s membership or account number in case scanning is unavailable.

Arizona is breaking new ground as the first state to support Apple’s digital state ID and driver’s license. Residents can submit their digital ID for approval, which adds the document to the Wallet app on iPhone. Once added, the iPhone or Apple Watch can be used to present the digital ID in place of a traditional card at TSA checkpoints in Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. Apple plans to launch the technology in additional US locales soon.

Some have taken photos or scans of their card to store in the iPhone Photos app. This is the simplest way to keep a copy of your vaccination card with you at all times. For more convenience and better verification, there is a way to add proof of vaccination to your Wallet app.

You can have many credit and debit cards saved in your Wallet app to use with Apple Pay, but only one pops up as the default when you double tap your side button to make a payment. Of course you can then choose a different card, but why have that extra step? If you have one card you like to use in almost every case, you should have it as the default option. Here’s how to switch your default payment card for Apple Pay on iPhone:

Wallet can also become an organizer of coupons, concert and sporting event tickets, gift cards, airplane tickets, movie passes and more. This keeps everything at your fingertips so you don’t need to go searching through emails or fumbling through a purse while a line of impatient movie-goers forms behind you.

Apple Pay is a payment method available to some iPhone users which allows you to use your iPhone to make a payment instead of a physical credit card. You can add a card to Apple Pay directly from your device, and it will be added to your iPhone’s Wallet, along with any other cards that you have added to the Wallet.

You can access your Wallet by opening the Wallet app on your device, but you can also access it by double-clicking the Home button when the device is locked. This level of convenience is nice if you need to show a boarding pass at the airport, or if you want to use Apple Pay at the store without the hassle of unlocking your iPhone and launching the Wallet app. But it also means that anyone with access to your iPhone can also access the cards and information in your Wallet, which is something that you may not want. Our short guide below will show you how to turn off this setting so that the Wallet cannot be accessed unless the device is unlocked.

How to Turn Off the Double-Click Home Button Option for the Wallet in iOS 9

This article was performed using an iPhone 6 Plus, in iOS 9. Note that this option is only available in iOS 9 or higher. If you have not yet done so, you can upgrade to iOS 9 to gain access to all of the new features and settings that the software has to offer.

iOS 9 brings a lot of interesting new options and settings to your iPhone. For example, you can turn on Low Power mode if you have been looking for a way to increase the amount of battery life that you get with your iPhone between charges.

Matthew Burleigh has been writing tech tutorials since 2008. His writing has appeared on dozens of different websites and been read over 50 million times.

After receiving his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Computer Science he spent several years working in IT management for small businesses. However, he now works full time writing content online and creating websites.

His main writing topics include iPhones, Microsoft Office, Google Apps, Android, and Photoshop, but he has also written about many other tech topics as well.

To use Apple Pay in iOS 8, you had hold your iPhone to the card reader first, and then you could either switch to a different card or pay with your default one. Now, in iOS 9, you can access your Wallet (which replaces Passbook) on the lock screen before you get to the reader.

Taking a queue from the Apple Watch feature that activates Apple Pay when you double-click the side button on the Watch, iOS 9 lets you double-click the Home or Touch ID button to bring up your Wallet.

How to Enable Wallet on the Lock Screen

With your card in the Wallet app and Apple Pay set up on your iPhone, launch the Settings app and navigate to Touch ID & Passcode. Under the “Allow Access When Locked” section, toggle on Wallet. This could already be toggled on by default on your device, depending on if you already had Apple Pay set up before installing iOS 9.

With Wallet now accessible from the lock screen, double-press on the Home or Touch ID button to open up it up. You can view all of your debit and credit cards added here, as well as any rewards cards you have. Apple Pay in iOS 9 also supports store credit cards, too.

We didn’t have any of the supported loyalty cards to test out, but you can receive and redeem rewards from the Wallet for Coca-Cola, Dunkin’ Donuts, Kohl’s, Walgreens, Wegmans, and Panera Bread, as well as any others currently supported by Passbook, like Fandango. As of right now, you can’t add any other rewards cards to scan barcodes at stores without NFC tech.

    Potential Security Concerns

While we don’t think it’s a big issue, anyone with access to your iPhone can open up your Wallet from the lock screen. Apple Pay and Touch ID can both be disabled, and someone could still double-click to see all of the cards in your Wallet. This is not really a big security issue, since only your last 4 digits of the cards are shown, but you still might not want others seeing what institutions you bank at or the stores you frequent most.

How to Disable Wallet on the Lock Screen

This part is easy. Just go back up the instructions on enabling Wallet on the lock screen, then toggle off Wallet. It’s that simple. If you’re extra cautious about what other people know about you, disabling this option is best.

However, we still like getting quick and easy access to the Wallet, and rest assured that no one can actually use Apple Pay on your iPhone without your fingerprint or passcode, so knowing which banks you use and what shops you like the most is the only thing anyone will know about you.

Interacting with Passes in Your App

There are two main reasons apps interact with passes: to provide an integrated user experience or to serve as a conduit for passes. An event venue’s app is an example of an integrated user experience. This app can show the performance schedule, play short video clips, and let users buy tickets. After buying a ticket, it can add a pass for that ticket to Wallet and create an event in the user’s calendar. It can also include UI for managing the tickets that users have purchased. An email or instant messaging client is an example of an app serving as a conduit. Just as it supports attachments such as images, it can also support passes attached to a message like Mail does. The app can display UI that indicates that the message has a pass attached and allow users to add the pass to their library. Supporting passes in your app should add value for the user; avoid trying to duplicate functionality of the Wallet app.

    Enabling Passbook Capabilities

Your app must have the appropriate entitlements before it can read, update, or delete passes. Use the Xcode Capabilities tab to turn on entitlements . If your provisioning profile is associated with multiple pass type identifiers, you can specify which of the identifiers your app can interact with. For more information, see Configuring Passbook for iOS Apps .

Because adding a pass requires explicit user interaction, it does not need an entitlement. Your app requires entitlements only to read, update, or delete passes.

    Accessing Passes

The PassKit framework provides model-level access to pass data. The PKPassLibrary class represents the pass library, and the PKPass class represents individual passes. The framework also provides a view controller, the PKAddPassesViewController class, which displays a pass and lets users add it to their pass library. Your app is responsible for the views it needs to display passes. To present a pass, use the passURL property of a pass to show it in Wallet.

    1. [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:[pass passURL]]

A pass should not depend on your app to be useful. Passes need to be self-contained and useful by themselves, even if your app is not installed.

Checking Whether the Pass Library Is Available

The presence of the PassKit framework and its classes doesn’t mean that the pass library is available. To check for its availability, call the isPassLibraryAvailable method of the PKPassLibrary class.

Do not use isPassLibraryAvailable to check whether passes can be added to the device. A device may have a pass library but not allow passes to be added. Use the canAddPasses method of the PKAddPassesViewController class instead.

Checking Whether a Pass Is in the Library

You can determine whether a pass is in the library even if you don’t have the entitlement to read the pass. This feature allows apps to act as a conduit for passes that they did not create. When you receive a new pass, check to see if it is in Wallet, and present the correct UI. If the pass is already in Wallet, indicate that the pass already exists. If the pass is not present, let users add it to Wallet.

To check whether a pass is in the library:

Create an instance of the PKPass class for the pass.

Create an instance of the PKPassLibrary class.

Call the containsPass: method of the PKPassLibrary class with the pass you just created.

    Getting Passes

Use the passes method of the PKPassLibrary class to get all passes that your app is entitled to access. Passes are returned in an arbitrary order. If your app displays a list of passes, it should sort them in some meaningful way such as by date.

To receive notifications when the pass library changes, register for the PKPassLibraryDidChangeNotification notification. Pass the instance of PKPassLibrary as the object. The pass library isn’t a singleton; each instance sends its own notifications, and you want the notifications from this particular instance. Use the addObserverForName:object:queue:usingBlock: method to specify that you want to respond on the main queue and provide a block to handle the notification. The user info dictionary of the notification describes what changed. Alternatively, use the dispatch_async and dispatch_get_main_queue functions to respond on the main thread.

    Reading a Pass

Use the passWithPassTypeIdentifier:serialNumber: method of the PKPassLibrary class to read a particular pass from the pass library.

You can access certain common bits of data, such as the organization name and description, using the properties of the PKPass class. You can access the description using the localizedDescription method. These properties are useful if your app is acting as a conduit passes that you didn’t create, so you don’t know their fields’ keys.

You can access specific fields of a pass using the their key with the localizedValueForFieldKey: method. This method is useful if you created the pass, because then you know the keys for specific fields.

    Adding a New Pass

To add a pass to the library:

Create an instance of the PKPass class for the pass, initializing it with the pass’s data.

Use the containsPass: method of the PKPassLibrary class to check whether the pass is in the library. Your app can use this method to detect the presence of a pass even if it doesn’t have the entitlements to read passes in the library.

If the pass isn’t in the library, use an instance of the PKAddPassesViewController class to let the user add it.

Present the add passes view controller modally, with animation.

    Changing a Pass

Passes cannot be changed directly on the device. Changing the contents of a pass would invalidate its signature. An updated pass needs to be signed using your private key, and distributing your private key as part of your app would be a particularly poor security practice.

To change a pass, coordinate with your server:

Your app connects to your server. It identifies the pass by serial number and pass type identifier and describes the change to your server.

Your server updates your business records as needed, creates a new version of the pass, and signs it.

Your app downloads the new pass from your server and uses the replacePassWithPass: method of the PKPassLibrary class to install it.

After creating a new version of the pass, your server should also send a push notification so that other devices with this pass installed will get the latest copy.

    Removing a Pass

Use the removePass: method of the PKPassLibrary class to remove a pass.

Remember that passes belong to the user, not to your app. Passes should be removed only in response to a direct user action. Never remove a pass without the user’s consent, even if the pass has expired or is outdated.

Add an Apple Account card to your iPhone’s Wallet app and use it with Apple Pay to buy physical products at Apple’s retail stores with your account balance and more.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

    • Apple provides a new virtual card in the Wallet app, dubbed Apple Account.
    • Unlike iTunes passes in Wallet, this card can also be added to Apple Pay.
    • Use it to buy apps, subscriptions, media and products at Apple’s stores.

How to add an Apple Account to the iPhone’s Wallet app

Open the Wallet app and your Apple Account card should be right there, ready to be added. If not, chances are you haven’t used an iTunes pass in Wallet before. To add an Apple Account card, touch “+” in the top-right corner of the iPhone’s Wallet app. On the “Add to Wallet” screen, choose the option labeled “Add Apple Account” underneath the “Available Cards” heading. Choose “Continue” on the next screen. After a few moments, your Apple Account card will be ready to use with Apple Pay.

You should now see a banner in the Wallet app confirming that your Apple Account card is ready to use, explaining that you can use it to “pay with your iPhone in the Apple Store, shop online or buy apps, subscriptions and other services.”

What do you need to use an Apple Account card?

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

With the card added, you can easily view your current Apple account balance right from the card’s details screen within the Wallet app (if you don’t have any funds in your Apple ID, you won’t be able to add the card). To add funds to your account balance, use your credit card or redeem an App Store or Apple Store gift card.

What is iTunes pass in Wallet?

Apple’s support document about Wallet lays out several types of passes that can be added to the app, such as resort passes, boarding passes, movie tickets, loyalty cards and so on. An iTunes pass can be added to Wallet as a quick way to not only see how much money you’ve added to your Apple account but also pay for your apps, media and subscriptions instead of your credit or debit card. Your iTunes pass even works as a way to pay for physical product purchases at Apple’s retail stores.

Apple also provides an iTunes pass in Wallet for those who prefer to buy apps, media and subscriptions with their account credit instead of their credit or debit card. Read: How to view your Apple Card expiration date and other sensitive info

Apple Account card vs. iTunes Pass: What’s the difference?

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

The main difference between the Apple Account card and the old iTunes pass is functionality. iTunes passes are much like all of the other types of passes that work in the iPhone’s Wallet app. The Apple Account card, on the other hand, is more like a virtual card that supports Apple Pay. This means you can use your Apple Account card for shopping online like you would with any other card in your Apple Pay account. Both iTunes Pass and the Apple Account card work at Apple’s retail stores, but iTunes passes are clunkier to use in that regard. Firstly, you must select your iTunes pass in Wallet. And secondly, you must hold up your iPhone for the clerk to scan the QR code printed on your iTunes pass. Read: What is Apple account balance and how to use it on your iPhone, iPad and Mac

Included in the few new features in iOS 15.5, Apple has rebranded the old iTunes Pass offering. Now referred to as the “Apple Account Card,” the option lets you quickly check your Apple ID balance from the Wallet app. Previously, the iTunes Pass generated a QR code you could use to make a purchase in an Apple Retail Store. Now, though, you can use it as a normal Apple Pay card. Here’s how to add it to Wallet.

Adding Your Apple Account Card Couldn’t Be Easier

All you need to do is make sure your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, at least iOS 15.5. Also, make sure you actually have funds loaded to your Apple ID, or the process won’t work.

Open the Wallet app and tap the plus sign (+) in the top right corner. In the Add to Wallet dialog, you’ll see an option labeled Add Apple Account. Tap that, and you’ll be greeted by an image of the card and the terms and conditions. Tap the blue Continue button once you’re satisfied.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

Now you’ll have a new Apple Account Card in your Wallet. It will show the balance you have loaded to your Apple ID, which you can use only with Apple. You can use it to buy products, accessories, apps, games, and so forth from Apple either online or in an Apple Retail Store.

Using Those Funds In the Store

With the addition of the Apple Account Card to Wallet, you won’t need to generate a QR code if you want to use those Christmas or birthday gift cards when you buy your next Mac or iPad. You’ll be able to use Apple Pay just as you would with any credit or debit card.

It’s important to reiterate, this won’t let you use those funds outside of Apple’s ecosystem. The Apple Account Card won’t be available to use everywhere that accepts Apple Pay. It’s only for use at an Apple Store, either in person or from Apple’s online storefront.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

Earlier this year, 9to5Mac discovered that Apple has been working on rebranding iTunes Pass as “Apple Account Card” in the Wallet app since iOS 15.5. While this feature was not mentioned in the official iOS 15.5 release notes, the Apple account card is now functional and available to users running the latest version of the operating system.

The Apple Account Card replaces the iTunes Pass, which users could add to the Wallet app to check their Apple ID balance. The pass contained a QR code that allowed shoppers to purchase items from Apple retail stores.

Now, instead of a pass, customers can use their Apple ID balance like a regular Apple Pay card with an Apple account card. Thus, instead of showing a QR code when making purchases in the Apple Store, the user will be able to make a purchase using Apple Pay. Of course, the balance can also be used to purchase apps, movies, and subscriptions to Apple services.

Your account balance can be used to buy products, accessories, apps, games, and more online or in a store using Apple Pay.

Another benefit of the Apple account card is that it’s now easier to access your Apple ID balance. While the iTunes Pass had to be manually added to the Wallet app via the App Store, the Apple account card almost automatically shows up in the Wallet app. All you have to do is click the “+” button and then complete the setup by clicking “Add an Apple account”.

Keep in mind that the card is only shown to users who have some balance in their Apple ID.

It looks like this feature is being rolled out gradually for iOS 15.5 users. Were you able to add your Apple ID card to the Wallet app? Let us know in the comments below.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

If you don’t use Apple Pay, there’s no reason you should have to see it on your iPhone’s lock screen every time you accidentally double-click the Home button. Here’s how to turn that shortcut off, while still allowing access to Apple Pay when you need to.

Apple Pay can be handy, especially if you can find merchants that accept it. Aside from being easier to use than digging out your credit or debit card, swiping the card, and then entering a PIN, Apple Pay also offers the advantage of not actually giving your credit card number to merchants. Instead, they get a one-time code that’s authorized for a single charge. To use it, all you have to do is hold your thumb over the Home button and wave the phone at the terminal. But by default, you can also double-click the Home button on the lock screen to show the cards and passes in your wallet. If you use Apple Pay regularly, it can be useful. If you don’t, and you’re sick of it opening up by accident, here’s how to turn that part off.

Fire up your settings app and tap “Wallet & Apple Pay.”

On the “Wallet & Apple Pay” screen, turn off the “Double-Click Home Button” option.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

Super simple? Yes. But having Apple Pay come up when you don’t need it can get pretty annoying. And you can still get to your cards and passes easily enough by just unlocking your phone and opening up the Wallet app.

If you’re on an iPhone, Apple Pay is the easiest way to get started with contactless payments. Not only is the digital wallet service free to use but it’s also already built into your phone.

Apple Pay works by letting you add a digital version of a debit or credit card to the Wallet app. Once you’re set up, you can use Apple Pay to buy things online, in apps, and in person without having to carry your physical credit cards, cash, or a separate wallet. You can also use Apple Pay to send money to friends and family through the Messages app. In some cities, you can even use Apple Pay to replace a transit pass for public transportation.

Generally, Apple will walk you through setting up Apple Pay when you first boot up a new gadget. But, if for some reason you didn’t, here’s everything you need to know to get started as well as some tips on how to use it.

    Setting up Apple Pay

You can play with the settings in the Wallet & Apple Pay menu.

No matter which device you’re setting up, the first step is to always check whether your device is compatible. For iPhones, that’s any model with Touch ID or Face ID, with the exception of the iPhone 5S. You can also use Apple Pay on certain iPads with Touch ID or Face ID and all Apple Watches since the Series 1. Mac models with Touch ID may also support Apple Pay. In any case, you can check whether your specific device is eligible here.

The next thing you’ll need to have is a supported credit or debit card and an Apple ID that’s signed into iCloud. If you’re not signed into your Apple ID, you may be asked to sign in during the setup process.

    On an iPhone

To add a card on your iPhone:

    • Open the Wallet app.
    • Tap the + button.
    • Under Available Cards, select Debit or Credit Card.
    • Tap Continue.
    • From here, you can either snap a picture of your physical card or enter your card details manually.
    • Verify your card details.
    • Tap Agree on the Terms and Conditions.
    • Select whether you want the added card to be your default card.
    • If you have an Apple Watch, you’ll now be prompted to add your card to the device. You can also do this later.

Once you’ve done this on the iPhone, it becomes much easier to add the same cards across your Apple devices. That’s why we recommend adding your cards to the iPhone first.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

You can also use Apple Pay on the Apple Watch.

    On an Apple Watch

If you want to use Apple Pay on your Apple Watch, first make sure you’ve enabled a passcode. This is a mandatory requirement — you won’t be able to use Apple Pay on the Watch otherwise.

To add a card on the Apple Watch:

    • Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
    • Hit the My Watch tab.
    • Scroll down to Wallet & Apple Pay.
    • From here, you can follow the same steps as above.
    • If you’ve previously added any cards on your iPhone, you should see them listed under Other cards on your iPhone. Tap the Add button next to each card to add it to your Watch.
    • Verify your card details and you’re done!

    On an iPad or Mac

On the iPad and Mac, you can use Apple Pay to buy things online and in apps as well as send money via the Messages app.

To set up Apple Pay on an iPad or Mac:

    • Go to Settings (iPad) or System Preferences (Mac).
    • Select Wallet & Apple Pay.
    • Select Add Card.
    • From here, any Previous Cards will be listed under Available Cards.
    • Select which cards you want to add.
    • Tap Continue.
    • Verify your card details and you’re done!

    Using Apple Pay

Before you start whipping out your phone to pay, you should take some time to get your settings sorted. If you’ve got more than one card in the Wallet app, you should take the time to designate which is your default card. Also, if you want to send and receive money in the Messages app, you’ve got to enable the Apple Cash card.

By default, Apple also requires some kind of two-factor authentication when using Apple Pay — which is why you have to enable a passcode on the Watch or have a device that supports Touch or Face ID. But if you’d like to bypass that, you can also designate an Express Transit Card.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

You’re not going to tap an iPad against a contactless payment terminal, but you can use Apple Pay on it when shopping online.

To access these options, head on over to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay on the iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad. On the Mac, go to System Preferences > Wallet & Apple Pay.

There are multiple ways to use Apple Pay, but most people will likely be using the service on their iPhones or Apple Watch. So long as you see these symbols where you want to use Apple Pay, you’re good to go.

Pay using an iPhone or Apple Watch

To pay using an iPhone with Face ID, double-click the side button. You’ll then see the default card appear, and the phone will attempt to authenticate you using Face ID. If it can’t, you may be asked to enter your passcode. The process is the same with Touch ID phones, except you’ll authenticate by putting your finger on the Touch ID button.

On the Apple Watch, you can also double-click the side button to bring up your designated card. Once that’s done, you can hover your phone or Watch over the contactless payment reader.

If you want to buy something in an app or from a website in Safari, all you have to do is click on the Apple Pay button at checkout. From there, you’ll be asked to authenticate your identity via Touch ID or Face ID, depending on the device. Once that’s done, verify which card you want to use and your payment information.

    Send money with Messages

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

To send money in Messages, you and the person you’re transacting with have to enable the Apple Cash card.

To send money via the Messages app, you — and whoever you’re transacting with — need to be in the US and have the Apple Cash card enabled. You can do this on your iPhone by heading to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Cash. Once that’s done, you can link your bank account to fund the card. Any balance you have on the card can also be transferred back to your bank.

Once Apple Cash is set up, all you have to do is tap the Apple Pay or Apple Cash icon in an individual iMessage conversation. From there you’ll be prompted to enter an amount and can then request or send payment.

That’s all there really is to it. Happy shopping.

Check How to add COVID-19 vaccination card to Apple Wallet

With the help of a new software update, Apple has designed a way to view and access your COVID-19 vaccination card from your phone.

Apple’s iOS 15.1 operating system allows users to store “verifiable” information about COVID vaccination in the Wallet app, making it easy to present proof of vaccination instead of carrying a physical card.

First, you will need to verify that you have the latest version of the software downloaded. To do this, go to “Settings”, then “General” and “Software Update”. From there, follow the steps to download the update.

Once you have iOS 15.1, you can add your COVID-19 records in a number of ways.

Here’s how to add your vaccination information to your digital wallet:

    1. You must have a QR code or downloadable file of your vaccination to get started. Your iPhone must also be updated with iOS 15.1 software
    2. If you have a QR code, open the camera app and press and hold on the code. When a notification from the Health app appears, tap and select “Add to Wallet and Health”
    3. Using a downloadable file, pick it up on your phone and tap the download link. Then select “Add to Wallet and Health”

Apple said the company cannot see the vaccination card or how it is used. The card is only stored on the phone itself and not in the cloud.

The company added that vaccination cards cannot be shared with other users on a separate device. Once added, users must verify their identity using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.

For Android users, Google has also created a way to store vaccine information in Google Pay or Chrome. For step-by-step instructions, click here.

If you want to continue using only the physical COVID vaccination card, what should you do if it is lost or damaged?

While the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may have their logo on COVID vaccination cards, they do not have the information available to print new ones. Instead, state health departments and healthcare providers will, and that’s where your search for a new card should begin.

These are the people people should contact if they need to get a new proof copy of their COVID vaccines, according to the CDC.

    Health service providers

The first step people should take if they lose or damage their cards, or if they never received one, is to contact the healthcare provider who gave them the injection.

Many companies, including CVS and Walgreen’s, will keep records of those shots and can help people get new cards. Other providers, including hospitals that run mass vaccination clinics, can also help.

    State information systems

If you can’t reach your provider, your state health department should be able to help you through their Immunization Information System. Vaccination providers are required by law to report COVID-19 vaccines to IIS and other systems.

Illinois records can be accessed through this portal.

Indiana records for COVID-19 vaccines can also be accessed through an online portal.

    V-Safe or VaxText

If a person needs proof of vaccination to receive a second or third dose of the COVID vaccine, the V-Safe and TaxText programs can also help.

Those programs, designed to get information about how people have fared after getting their shots, will also have vaccination information available to people who signed up, according to the CDC.

Check How to Add QR code in Apple Wallet

On Tuesday, Apple announced that in iOS 15.1 there will be a feature to add and save health records that are verifiable in the Health app, including COVID-19 vaccines and test results.

“The verifiable medical records in the Health app are based on the SMART Health Cards specification. Users can choose to share verifiable health data stored in the Health application with approved third-party applications that request this information, such as airlines, venues and other companies that facilitate in-person interactions, ”Apple explained.

“And in an upcoming software update, they can also choose to add verifiable COVID-19 vaccination records as an Apple Wallet vaccination card to present at businesses, venues and more.”

The ability in iOS 15.1 to allow you to save your vaccine card in the Health app and Apple Wallet means that a screenshot of your QR code is no longer displayed.

The Health Pass in Apple Wallet, it is possible

Among the Apple applications pre-installed on the iPhone, Wallet is undoubtedly one of the most practical on a day-to-day basis. Formerly called Passbook, this application is a digital wallet.

It allows grouping, in the form of cards, plane or train tickets, transport tickets, hotel reservations, movie tickets, payment cards, loyalty cards and even, in some countries. , official documents such as identity card or driver’s license.

In some European countries, Apple Wallet may also include a card displaying the Health Pass QR code. Unfortunately, in France, the government does not allow this manipulation, probably to encourage the French to use the TousAntiCovid app.

But nothing is impossible, other services also allow you to create a Health Pass card in Apple Wallet. And since we are friendly, we give you the method to do it.

How to create a Health Pass card in Apple Wallet

Two steps are required to successfully integrate a Health Pass card into Apple Wallet. The first is to retrieve the QR code, the second is to import it into Wallet through a third-party service.

    Pick up the health pass

Therefore, the first step is to collect your European Health Pass. You can choose to take a photo of the document delivered after your vaccination in which your QR code appears.

If you have been vaccinated for several months, this method does not work as the first documents did not include a QR code but a 2D-DOC format does not work here.

If you are in this situation, go to the Ameli website to retrieve your certificate. You will then get the QR code at the top right of your certificate. You just have to photograph it by zooming in on the QR Code. If you re-certify on a mobile device, just take a screenshot.

There you have it, the first successful step.

    Create an Apple Wallet card

Once your QR code has been retrieved, go to an Apple Wallet card creation service. According to the US, CovidPass is the most interesting solution since it is accessible from any browser. Also, the data is not uploaded to a server and the source code is publicly available.

This is the method to create an Apple Wallet card with CovidPass:

    1. Go to the CovidPass website
    2. Choose the photo of your QR code
    3. Choose a background (this will be the color of your map)
    4. Accept the general conditions of use
    5. Validity

And voila, your Apple Wallet card is available in your digital wallet!

Earlier this year, 9to5Mac discovered that Apple had been working to rebrand iTunes Pass as “Apple Account Card” in the Wallet app with iOS 15.5. Although there was no mention of this feature in the official release notes for iOS 15.5, the Apple Account Card is now live and available to users running the latest version of the operating system.

Apple Account Card comes to replace iTunes Pass, which was a pass that users could add to the Wallet app to check their Apple ID balance. The pass had a QR Code that allowed customers to buy products in Apple Retail Stores.

Now, instead of a pass, customers can use their Apple ID balance as a regular Apple Pay card with the Apple Account Card. This way, instead of having to show the QR Code when shopping at an Apple Store, the user will be able to complete the purchase using Apple Pay. Of course, the balance can also be used to buy apps, movies, and subscribe to Apple services.

Your account balance can be used to buy products, accessories, apps, games and more online or in store with Apple Pay.

Another benefit of the Apple Account Card is that it’s now easier to access the Apple ID balance. Whereas the iTunes Pass had to be manually added to the Wallet app through the App Store, the Apple Account Card shows up almost automatically in the Wallet app. All you have to do is tap the “+” button and then finish the setup by tapping “Add Apple Account.”

One thing to keep in mind is that the card only appears for users who have some balance available in their Apple ID.

The feature appears to be gradually being rolled out to users running iOS 15.5. Were you able to add your Apple Account Card to the Wallet app? Let us know in the comments below.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

Maryland is now the second state in the U.S. to support identification cards stored in the Apple Wallet, but the convenient feature comes with a few limitations. The move comes nearly a year after Apple announced that it would add software-level support for both government and personal identification cards in the Wallet app found on its devices. Previously, the pre-installed application from Apple was a popular option for storing a variety of digital cards and passes, but IDs were reserved for a physical wallet. It can hold everything from vaccination records to hotel room keys, and it is now even more versatile in Maryland.

The feature was first announced in June 2021 at the Worldwide Developers Conference, an annual Apple event primarily focused on upcoming software versions of iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS, MacOS, and tvOS. At the time, there was no real implications to the announcement — it would be some time before governments would make the feature available to the public. There was a roadmap to the rollout, though, and some states were named as participating in the program. These included Arizona, Georgia, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah. In March, Arizona officially launched the program in its state, becoming the first in the country to host mobile IDs on a third-party platform. Maryland is now the second, but with limitations.

Maryland added support for mobile identification cards in May 2022 with real-world implications at two major airports, according to the state’s Motor Vehicle Administration. The feature is intended to make it easier to pass through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints at Baltimore Washington International airport and Reagan National airport. It functions the same as any other card or pass in the Apple Wallet — the phone is authenticated with a passcode or biometric and held to a near-field communication (NFC) reader. However, users are required by law to carry their physical drivers’ license or ID card with them even after setting up the digital card. Furthermore, the aforementioned TSA checkpoints are the only places that accept the digital ID card. It’s not currently accepted by law enforcement or any third-parties that may require identification.

It’s surprisingly easy to get started using a Maryland driver’s license or ID card in the Apple Wallet. The process starts the same as adding any type of card or pass to the wallet, which is by opening the application and tapping the ‘+’ symbol at the top right corner of the screen. Then, a list of different types of cards and passes will appear. Tap the option to add a Maryland state ID card to the wallet, and a slew of prompts will help the user set up the new feature. The state will need a clear and legible photo of the front and back of the physical card, as well as a photo of the person trying to set up the feature. To verify the cardholder is the same person adding the ID card to their wallet, the app uses a process similar to Face ID’s setup calibration to ensure the user is actually present and alert. Finally, a photo is taken and sent to the state MVA, which verifies the application.

The functionality is limited not only in daily use, but also in the devices and software that it is compatible with — using a digital ID card requires an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 15.4 or newer. It’s also available on the Apple Watch, but only on the Series 4 or later running WatchOS 8.4 or later. A state ID can only be added to one phone and paired watch at a time, which has its security benefits, but might make phone and watch upgrades a hassle. For now, the feature is more of a gimmick for most people with a Maryland state ID, unless the user travels often at the BWI or Reagan National airports. Hopefully the concept of Apple’s digital ID cards becomes more useful in the future.

Last month, curious minds found code in the early iOS 15.5 betas hinting at a new “Apple Account Card” that would replace the defunct iTunes Pass. Now, it appears that Apple is ready to turn the key on this feature following the public release of iOS 15.5 earlier this month.

Since the official iOS 15.5 release notes didn’t mention this new Apple Account Card, some assumed that Apple was just preparing the underlying code for a later release — perhaps in iOS 15.6. However, it appears that it’s ready to go, and it’s rolling out now.

While it’s unclear how quickly that’s happening, the folks at 9to5Mac, who first found the references to it in April, have noticed the option to add the Apple Account Card appearing in the Wallet app on at least some iOS 15.5 devices.

What Is the Apple Account Card?

The new Apple Account Card is intended to be a virtual payment card that can be used in Apple Stores to spend money from your Apple ID balance. Think of it like a prepaid credit card for the Apple Store.

How to remove cards and passes from the wallet app on iphone

Of course, in true Apple Pay fashion, there’s no physical card involved. Instead, the Apple Account card goes into Apple Pay just like a Visa or Mastercard, and customers can bring it up to draw from their stored Apple ID balance to make purchases at an Apple Store.

The Apple Account Card replaces the old iTunes Pass, which was disabled for most users with the release of iOS 15 last year. The iTunes Pass featured a QR code that customers could use at an Apple Store to load up a balance into their iTunes Store or App Store accounts.

However, this was a one-way system — the money could go in to be spent on digital purchases, but you couldn’t use it to make purchases at an Apple Store. It was designed as an alternative to buying iTunes Gift cards for folks who preferred not to use a credit or debit card with their iTunes or App Store accounts.

At the time, iTunes Gift Cards and Apple Store Gift Cards were entirely separate things. That changed in 2020 when Apple announced a new Universal Gift Card for “Everything Apple.” Following that, your Apple ID balance could be used for both digital purchases and physical products — even at an Apple Store. However, using it in person was a cumbersome process, requiring that you make your purchase through the Apple Store app like you would for an in-store pickup.

However, with the Apple Account Card, that process now becomes as easy as using a credit or debit card with Apple Pay; call up your Apple Account Card and tap it against the terminal just as you would any other payment card.

It’s also probably not a coincidence that this is happening the same week Apple is rolling out Tap to Pay on iPhone across its U.S. retail stores. This may likely be necessary for Apple to accept payments with the new Apple Account Card. Although Apple could upgrade its traditional merchant terminals and software to handle this, there’s no point in spending time and effort when those are being replaced with Tap to Pay on iPhone anyway.

How to Add the Apple Account Card to Your iPhone Wallet

You can also add the Apple Account Card to your Apple Wallet by following the same basic steps you would for any other payment card, transit card, or Digital ID.

Note that the option to add the card will only appear if you have a balance available on your Apple ID. There’s no point in adding it otherwise, as it’s the opposite of the iTunes Pass — it’s for spending money from your Apple ID, not adding money to your account.

    1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
    2. Tap the plus button in the top-right corner.
    3. Tap Add Apple Account under Available Cards. If this doesn’t appear, the Apple Account Card isn’t available for you yet.
    4. Follow the confirmation instructions to add the Apple Account Card.

Once the card is in your wallet, your current Apple ID balance will be shown in the top-right corner of the virtual card, in the same way as it does for an Apple Cash card. Using the card works like Apple Cash or any other payment card: open your wallet, bring up the card, authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, and tap it against the terminal in the Apple Store.

For now, it’s likely the Apple Account Card is limited to users in the United States. However, it shouldn’t take too long to expand internationally since this system is entirely under Apple’s control, unlike Apple Cash and the Apple Card, which require banking partnerships.

So, the rollout is most likely just a matter of ensuring that all the stores in each country are upgraded to accept the new Apple Account Card. If this is indeed tied to the rollout of Tap to Pay on iPhone in Apple Stores, that means we’ll probably see the Apple Account Card arrive in other countries at the same time that Apple rolls out that technology to its employees in those places.
