Windows can rotate your screen without any extra software. This is especially useful if you have a desktop monitor that rotates. Many PCs have hotkeys that can rotate your screen, too, and these are easy to accidentally press.

How to Rotate Your Screen on Windows 10 or 7

To rotate your screen on Windows 10, right-click your desktop, and then select the “Display Settings” command. In Windows 7, right-click the “Screen Resolution” command instead.

On Windows 10, you’ll be taken to the Settings > System > Display window. On Windows 7, you’ll end up at Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display > Display Settings.

Locate the Orientation option under Resolution, click the dropdown menu under it, and then choose your preferred screen orientation—Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (flipped), or Portrait (flipped.)

This window looks different on Windows 7, but has the same Orientation options.

If you don’t see a screen orientation option in the Settings app on Windows 10 or the Control Panel on Windows 7, try updating your computer’s graphics drivers. This option may be missing if you’re using generic video drivers that aren’t appropriate for your computer’s graphics hardware.

How to Rotate Your Screen With Hotkeys

Some PCs have hotkeys that quickly rotate the screen when pressed. These are provided by the Intel graphics drivers, and are only enabled on some PCs. If your PC’s display suddenly rotated while you were pressing something on the keyboard, you probably triggered the hotkey accidentally.

To rotate your screen with hotkeys, press Ctrl+Alt+Arrow. For example, Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow returns your screen to its normal upright rotation, Ctrl+Alt+Right Arrow rotates your screen 90 degrees, Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow flips it upside down (180 degrees), and Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow rotates it 270 degrees.

You can change these hotkeys—or disable them, if you want—using the Hot Key Manager tool in the Intel Graphics Control Panel on your PC. To access it, right-click your desktop, and then select “Intel Graphics Settings” or press Ctrl+Alt+F12 to open the Intel control panel. Click Options, and then head to Support > Hot Key Manager.

If you don’t see the Intel Graphics Settings tool on your PC, you probably aren’t using Intel graphics. If you don’t see the screen rotation shortcuts on the Hot Key Manager screen, they aren’t available on your PC.

How to Disable Automatic Screen Rotation on Windows 10

Convertible PCs and tablets running Windows 10 automatically rotate their screens as the device orientation changes. This works just like modern iPhones and Android smartphones. To stop your screen from rotating automatically, you can enable Rotation Lock.

To do so, open the Action Center by clicking the notification icon at the right side of your taskbar, or by pressing Windows+A.

Click or tap the “Rotation Lock” quick action tile to lock your screen in its current orientation. Click or tap the tile again to disable Rotation Lock.

The Rotation Lock option is also available at Settings > System > Display.

If you don’t see the option in either place, then your device doesn’t support automatic screen rotation because it doesn’t have built-in accelerometer hardware.

If the Rotation Lock tile appears grayed out, you must put your convertible PC into tablet mode—for example, by rotating its screen around or by detaching its screen from the keyboard. Rotation Lock isn’t available in standard laptop mode, as the screen will never automatically rotate itself in standard laptop mode.

How to Rotate Your Screen With Your Graphics Driver’s Control Panel

Options for rotating your PC’s screen may also be available in your Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD graphics drivers, depending on what graphics hardware your PC has. However, the built-in Windows option should work on all PCs. If Windows can’t change your screen rotation for some reason, you may be able to do it with your graphics driver’s control panel.

On PCs with Intel graphics, right-click the desktop and select “Intel Graphics Settings.” Select “Display” and choose a display orientation. This option wasn’t available on one of our PCs with Intel graphics, so we had to use the standard Windows Settings app instead. It will only be present here on some PCs.

On PCs with AMD graphics, this option no longer appears available in the latest versions of the Catalyst Control Center. It was previously located under “Common Display Tasks” in this application, but you must now change your screen rotation from the standard Windows Settings app or Control Panel instead.

On PCs with NVIDIA graphics, right-click the desktop and select “NVIDIA Control Panel.” Select “Rotate Display” under Display and choose your screen orientation.

Use a Keyboard Shortcut

The most common keyboard shortcut combinations to rotate the screen on Windows 10 computers are:

If the keyboard shortcuts don’t fix the problem, modify the display orientation through the Display Settings.

In Windows 10

Right-click an empty space on the desktop and select Display Settings, or go to the Windows search bar and enter display settings.

In the Display screen, select the Display Orientation drop-down arrow and choose Landscape.

A confirmation dialog box prompts you to either retain the new screen orientation or return to the previous display. If you’re satisfied with the updated look, select Keep changes. If not, wait 15 seconds for the prompt to expire or select Revert.

In Windows 8

Select the Windows button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

Select Control Panel.

In the Control Panel window, go to the Appearance and Personalization section and choose Adjust screen resolution.

Select the Orientation drop-down arrow and choose Landscape.

Select Apply to implement the change.

In the confirmation dialog box, select Keep changes to keep the new screen orientation. To go back to the previous orientation, wait 15 seconds for the prompt to expire or select Revert.

In Windows 7

Select the Windows menu button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

Select Control Panel.

Go to the Appearance and Personalization section and select Adjust screen resolution.

In the Change the appearance of your display window, select the Orientation drop-down arrow and choose Landscape.

Select Apply to rotate the display.

In the Display Settings dialog box, select Keep changes to maintain the new orientation. Otherwise, wait 15 seconds for the changes to return to the previous orientation or select Revert.

You can just as easily rotate your screen on MacOS, as you can on Windows. You don’t need any third party application as it can all be done through the operating system settings.

3. Hold down Cmd + Option key and click on display

There’s no denying most people use their monitors—and therefore Windows 11 and Windows 10—in landscape mode. But that isn’t the only way to use a PC, and there are plenty of folks who like to use their monitors in portrait mode instead, or who use different orientations for each display in their multi-monitor setup. Luckily it’s easy to make Windows respect that choice.

One caveat before we begin: longtime PC users probably remember rotating their screen via keyboard shortcuts. Microsoft removed that option in later releases of Windows 10, however, and Windows 11 doesn’t allow you to rotate the screen via the keyboard either. You’re going to be stuck navigating graphical user interfaces if you want to change the screen’s orientation, but the good news is that it’s not as easy to accidentally end up with an upside-down desktop.

That aside, here’s how to rotate the screen on Windows 11 and Windows 10.Note that our screenshots were taken in Windows 11, but the settings layout is similar in both operating systems.

How to rotate your screen in Settings

1. Navigate to the Display page in Settings. The quickest way to access this page is to right-click on your desktop and click the “Display settings” option. You can also search for “Rotate” via the Start menu; both options lead to the Display page in the Settings app.

2. Select a monitor if you have multiple displays.

3. Click the button inside the ‘Display orientation’ section.

4. Choose your preferred display orientation. There are four options to choose from: Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (flipped) and Portrait (flipped).

5. Click ‘Keep Changes’ to change your settings. That’s all there is to it. Windows 11 will now match your monitor’s orientation without requiring you to use anything but the built-in Settings app. But there are other ways to change the screen’s orientation in Windows, too, depending on what kind of GPU you’re using.

How to rotate your screen via graphics control panels

Windows 11’s Settings app (or Windows 10’s which is similar) isn’t the only program capable of rotating the screen. The same control panels (note the lowercase letters) used to change the color profile, refresh rate, and other settings with Intel, AMD, and Nvidia graphics can also be used to rotate the screen. We’re going to focus on achieving this via the Nvidia Control Panel, because that’s what we have available on our test system, but the steps are similar for systems with Intel or AMD graphics.

1. Access the display settings in your graphics control panel. For the Nvidia Control Panel the quickest way to do this is to right-click on the display and then click on “Show more options” or press Shift+F10. Then you’ll want to click “Nvidia Control Panel” in the window that appears. You can also find the program via the Start menu’s search tool.

2. Choose ‘Rotate display’ or its equivalent. This page is found in the “Display” section of the Nvidia Control Panel.

3. Choose your preferred screen orientation. As with the Settings app, there are four available options: Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (flipped) and Portrait (flipped).

That’s all there is to it. Now you have two options for rotating the screen in Windows 11 and Windows 10 so you can escape the confines of landscape mode on your monitor of choice.

4. Confirm the new setting. A window will appear asking if you want to keep the new screen orientation or switch back to the old one. Click “Yes” to save the new setting or “No” to use the previous setting. Nvidia Control Panel will also revert back to the previous setting after a 20-second delay if you don’t choose either option.

Voila! Now you have two ways to rotate your screen in Windows 11 and Windows 10. It’s a shame that Microsoft removed the ability to accomplish this via keyboard shortcuts (although probably not to computer lab staff who had to deal with kids pranking each other as soon as their backs were turned) but at least there are still multiple ways to manage this setting.
