How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

Want to share some large files with a few friends, but worried about how you’ll keep the file transfer private? Here’s how to use uTorrent as a simple tracker and share files privately with your friends.

Note: this is the fourth part in our series explaining how BitTorrent works—be sure and read the rest of the series, where we explained what BitTorrent is and how it works, how to create your own torrents, and then how to protect your privacy on BitTorrent.

Preparation: Find Your Public IP and Configure Your Router

Before we begin, we’ll need some important information. First, you’ll need your external IP address. A very easy way to find this out is to visit WhatIsMyIP.com. You’ll see your IP address in a large font in the format XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, and you’ll need to copy that down.

If you have a DNS service like DynDNS.com, you can use your DNS redirect URL instead of your IP address.

Next, you’ll need to find out which port you’re accepting incoming connections on, whether it’s open or not. Open up uTorrent, and go to Options > Preferences. Click on the Connections Tab on the right.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

Next to where it says “Port used for incoming connections” you’ll see your port number, so copy that down. We need to check to see if that port is open so leave uTorrent running, go to the uTorrent Port Checker, plug in your port, and submit. If all is good, you should see something like this:

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

If not, you may need to make some changes to your router configuration. Lastly, we need to enable uTorrent’s built-in tracker. In uTorrent’s preferences, click on the Advanced tab.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

Click on “bt.enable_tracker” and change the value to True. Then, click OK and restart uTorrent for the changes to take effect.

Creating a Private Torrent

Now that everything is configured and we have all of the important information, let’s create a new private torrent. Go to File > Create New Torrent. Essentially, you’re adding your own IP address and port as a valid tracker, as in this screenshot:

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

As you can see, we put our information under the Trackers section in the following format:

The “localhost” portion is a reflexive reference which tells uTorrent that whatever computer it’s running on is also a valid tracker. Make sure that Private torrent is also checked off. This prevents sharing of the torrent using other methods such as PEX and DHT. Now, unless someone has the torrent you created, they cannot download your content.

For some added security, you can force encryption on outgoing connections. Go to Options > Preferences, then click on BitTorrent.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

Next to “Outgoing,” choose Forced and uncheck “Allow incoming legacy connections.”

A few important notes:

  • uTorrent MUST be running in order someone to download the torrent from you.
  • Your IP address must not change during seeding (sorry dial-up users). If you have a DNS redirect, then things should work fine.
  • Your port must not change during seeding.
  • If you forced encryption, your friend’s client must be configured to allow encryption.

uTorrent isn’t powerful enough to create a full-blown tracker, but it does work well on a small scale and in our tests it seeded to 10 people without any issues. It’s perfect for sharing files with some friends without using a public tracker and sacrificing your privacy on both Windows and OS X. While Transmission doesn’t have this functionality built-in, we’ve heard excellent things about running uTorrent in WINE so our Linux users aren’t left out, either.

One of the most frustrating things about Windows 10 is that it can block programs you need to access. For example, if you try to use uTorrent on your PC and nothing happens, this could be because Windows blocked it. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to fix this problem!

    Table of Contents

    What is uTorrent?

uTorrent is a program you can use to download files from the internet. The u stands for “micro.” It’s tiny and very lightweight, so it won’t slow your computer down like some other programs might.

It starts with just one file called utorrent.exe that runs in the background of your system. Whenever you want to do something on the software (like search for something on Google or start downloading a movie), there will be an icon at the top left corner labeled “utorrent” which opens up all these options! You don’t need any special installation process because it doesn’t require much space.

Why Is uTorrent Blocked By Windows 10?

Antivirus software can sometimes flag uTorrent when you download files from torrents. A common reason for this is if the file has a PUP (potentially unwanted program) which may be trying to take over your computer or hijack it with malware and viruses while pretending to offer something helpful like an antivirus scan. If that’s not what they’re doing, then they might just try installing more programs on your system without permission.

Windows Defender or any anti-virus software in Windows are no exception. They often block uTorrent.

How to Allow uTorrent in Windows Defender

In Windows 10, we can set Windows Defender to allow a process.

    • Open Windows Security
    • Access Virus & Threat Protection page
    • On the action about uTorrent check “Allow on device” to allow uTorrent

Allow uTorrent in Other Antivirus Software

There are many antivirus software out there. Each one has a quarantine section and settings for exclusion of certain process.

    Most antivirus follow these steps:

    1. Open your antivirus software
    2. Click on the settings tab
    3. Find the “exclusions” section and add uTorrent to it by clicking on the plus sign next to “add an exclusion”
    4. Once you have added uTorrent, click save changes at the bottom of the page

How to use NZBGet: from setup to downloading files to using NZBGet with an indexer.

Everything you need to know about how to use NZBGet newsreader for downloading from Usenet.

If you are reading this, it’s because you want to learn how to use NZBGet. Wise choice!

NZBGet is probably the best NZB downloader available today. An NZB downloader is a special kind of Usenet newsreader client and NZBGet’s main rival is SabNZBd. But NZBGet offers a number of advantages compared to SabNZBd.

Unfortunately, most of the online tutorials and help about NZBGet are not that great. But we’re here to change that. This post is long, but that’s because it is comprehensive and detailed. If you like, jump to the parts you need using the handy table of content below or read the entire post from top to bottom.

    Here’s what we’ll cover:

[+] ‘NZBGet How-to Guide‘ contents (select to expand)

To maximize your Usenet downloads and access the most uncensored newsgroups, get an unlimited News hosting monthly plan.

    How to Setup NZBGet

First, let’s look at how to setup NZBGet with the aim of getting off to a quick start.

    Installation

Make sure to download NZBGet from its official website at .

Then install it in the usual way.

Top Tip – We installed NZBGet to an encrypted VeraCrypt virtual drive. If you do the same, make sure you mount the hidden volume before installing NZBGet. VeraCrypt is free software for Windows, Mac and Linux that lets you create encrypted, virtual drives on your computer. Installing NZBGet on a hidden drive is not strictly necessary, but we like installing all our downloading apps (as well as saving all our downloaded files!) to encrypted drives for extra safety. For example, we frequently cross borders and don’t want to give nosy border officials any excuse to give us extra grief.

    Initial Settings

One of the best pieces of advice we can give is to stick to NZBGet’s default settings as much as possible. You can always play with the Settings more later once you are more familiar with Usenet in general and NZBGet in particular.

To get started, chose Settings from NZBGet’s top menu. Then choose NEWS-SERVERS at the left menu.

Here’s where you will find the most important settings to enter in NZBGet (select to zoom).

To get off to a fast start with NZBGet, you only need to enter the following data. For all other settings, just leave them as is:

    • Server1 Name – this can be anything that helps you identify your main Usenet provider. For example, it can be a nickname or abbreviation, if you wish. In our example, we entered “Newshosting”.
    • Server1 Host – this is important and will be provided to you by your Usenet provider. If your Usenet provider is Newshosting, you can use the news server host address, news.newshosting.com
    • Server1 Port – to keep things easy for now, stick with the default port setting of 119 which almost all Usenet providers support. Note that port 119 is unencrypted. If, like Newshosting, your Usenet provider also supports encrypted connections, you can try other port numbers later. For example, both Newshosting and Usenet.Farm support port number 563 for encrypted (SSL) connections. In this case, you would also have to change the Server1 Encryption setting from No to Yes. But, for now, we highly recommend you stick with the default port setting of 119 and get NZBGet up and running. Later, you can play with the Port and Encryption settings.
    • Sever1 Username – This will also be provided to you by your Usenet provider and is the username you need to access the news server host address you entered above.
    • Server1 Password – This is the password paired with your username above that allows you to access the news server host address you entered above. Make sure you enter your news server access password and not the password you use for logging into the provider’s website. For Newshosting, the username/password you use is the same whether accessing the news server or the website’s customer dashboard, but for other providers they may be different.
  • Server1 Connections – to keep things easy for now, stick with the default setting of 4 connections. As tempted as you may be to change this number, leave the default setting for now. Just because your Usenet provider supports 10, 25 or 60+ connections does NOT mean you should enter this number here right away. Plus, adding more connections does NOT always mean faster speeds. Read more about Usenet connections.
  • Server1 Notes – If there is anything you want to remember about this account, for example when it expires, you can enter it here. But feel free to leave this blank.
  • For all the other Server1 settings you see – including Level, Optional, Group, JoinGroup, Encryption, Cipher, Retention and IpVersion – you don’t need to change them.

We’ve all been there. You read about a great little traditional desktop application or utility that you think will be a great help. Once it’s downloaded, boom!, Windows 10 blocks it thanks to Windows Defender SmartScreen, a feature that prevents unrecognized apps from running. It’s a helpful security feature that can sometimes be annoying. Here’s how to get past it.

Are you sure you want to do this?

Before we go any further, keep in mind that the SmartScreen is there for your protection. It is designed to restrict any programs that are known to be malicious or aren’t commonly downloaded. For that reason, anything experimental or outside the norm is not trusted by Windows.

Nevertheless, if you trust the creator of the program that you want to install, here’s how to get past it.

Getting past SmartScreen on a case-by-case basis

The Windows 10 SmartScreen in the Creators Update.

When SmartScreen appears it usually says the app you want to install is unrecognized. The filter then leaves you with only one button to push: Don’t run.

By showing only one option, Microsoft hopes to prevent the majority of users from running untrusted apps, because many won’t bother to look beyond that single button.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums Ian Paul/IDG

Now you can install the program you want.

If you still want to take the risk and proceed, click the More info link at the end of the warning paragraph.

When you click that, you then see a window like this one at left, with a new option: Run anyway. Click that, and you’re all set. The program will start installing as normal.

Turn it off, turn it off!

You may do away with the SmartScreen entirely. (Feeling lucky?) In the Creators Update, Open Windows Defender Security Center and click App & browser control. Under the sub-heading Check apps and files, select the Off button.

Now SmartScreen won’t block any apps, but that may also put your PC at greater risk if you’re not careful.

MongoDB is an open-source, document-oriented database designed with both scalability and developer agility in mind. Instead of storing your data in tables and rows as you would with a relational database, in MongoDB, you store JSON-like documents with dynamic schemas.

The goal of MongoDB is to bridge the gap between key-value stores (which are fast and scalable) and relational databases (which have rich functionality).

Here, we will see how to install MongoDB on CentOS 7 / RHEL 7.

    Add MongoDB Repository

MongoDB provides packages for CentOS / RHEL operating system from it’s dedicated repository.

Add the MongoDB repository on your system.

Add the below information to the above repo file.

    MongoDB 4.4

    MongoDB 4.2

    MongoDB 4.0

    Install MongoDB

Once you have added MongoDB repository, run the following command to install MongoDB.

mongob-org (Meta Package that installs below components)
    mongodb-org-serverServer Package
    mongodb-org-mongosShared Daemon
    mongodb-org-shellCommand Line Interface
mongodb-org-toolsMongoDB Tools (Import, Export, Restore, Dump and other tools)

    Post Installation

    Admin User

MongoDB doesn’t come with any authentication mechanism to restrict user access. To improve security, create an admin user to manage databases.

    Access Control

After creating an admin user, edit the MongoDB configuration file to enable authentication.

Then, add below lines to the mongod.conf file.

    Disable Huge Pages

MongoDB recommends the huge pages be disabled as it causes the performance issue. So, go ahead and disable transparent huge pages.

    SELinux

We recommend you to disable SELinux on CentOS 7 / RHEL 7. If you still want to use SELinux, then you need to customize the SELinux policy for MongoDB.

    Control MongoDB service

    To start MongoDB service, run:

To check the status MongoDB service, run:

    Output:

    Check the MongoDB version.

    Output:

Use netstat command to check whether the MongoDB is listening on port 27017 .

    Output:

    Access MongoDB

Connect to MongoDB shell by entering the following command.

  • This guide was created using freenas 11.1-U5

    A few notes and assumptions

This guide assumes that you already have a windows share with your media, and that the permissions are already configured properly on that.
Also in order to use these plugins properly, you will need to have a usenet provider account, and indexers.

Note: In the video you will notice that I copy and paste multiple commands at the same time. If you are new to freenas or using a command line, I would recommend entering the commands separately to verify that you don’t get any errors.

I apologize for the watermark in the video.

    • First we want to setup our group and user that will ensure that the services in the jails have permissions to your media share.

Start by creating a new group. (You can make your group name and id whatever you like, however you need to make sure that your group id and user id are the same, and that you are consistent with that throughout the configuration). In this example I’ll be creating the group and user newmedia with the id of 816.

Now we need to create our user with the same information. Note: The password can be whatever you choose.

Now lets add this user in windows.
Assuming that you already have your media share mapped, right click on the drive and go to properties>security>advanced>add>select a principal>advanced. Once you are here you want to click find now and this should list all of the available users. Scroll down until you find newmedia with the ip address of your freenas system next to it.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

Apply your changes and click OK

    • Now that we are done preparing our permissions, lets create a new jail for the plugins and give it access to our media.

You can name the jail anything you like for this example I’ll use test.

    • Now that we have our permissions and storage setup we need to install the plugins through the jail shell. You can either select the jail and select the shell option, or you can ssh into it using the jails ip address.

Note:if you enter in the shell from the main freenas, you can enter “jls” which will list your jail numbers, and then enter “jexec #” and at this point you will be in the jail shell.

Note: If you are creating a new dataset and share with this guide, the following step is to create the directories necessary. If you already have a file structure established skip this step.

Once we are in the jail we are going to create our directories by running the following commands

    • Now we are done configuring the plugins in the jail, and we can move on to configuring them from the web ui.

the plugins can be found by typing in the jail ip address with the appropriate port ex: 192.168.1.56:8080
The default ports for the plugins are as follows
    Sabnzbd: 8080
    Sonarr: 8989
    Radarr: 7878

First we will begin by configuring sabnzbd.

in the setup wizard it will prompt you to enter your usenet server information. If this is not done here, it can be done under config>servers. (be sure to test the connection also)

Next under config>folders set the following.

    • Temporary Download Folder = /mnt/media/downloads/sabnzbd/incomplete
    • Completed Download Folder = /mnt/media/downloads/sabnzbd/complete

Next under config>categories set the following.

    • Category = tv , Folder/Path = tv
    • Category = movies , Folder/Path = movies

And lastly under config>switches set the following.

    • Abort jobs that cannot be completed = [√]
    • Action when encrypted RAR is downloaded = Abort
    • Extra PAR2 Parameters = -t+

Now that we have sabnzbd setup, we will move on to sonarr and radarr.

Note: Sonarr and Radarr are essentially the same, so I will only demonstrate how to setup Sonarr and these steps can be repeated for Radarr.

Note: With these steps select the test connection button each time you add an api to ensure that everything is working properly.

Under settings>indexers this is where you will want to add the indexers that you are subscribed to as mentioned in the beginning of the guide. It is recommended that you have 2 or 3 in the event that one crashes your service won’t be interrupted.

Next under settings>download client this is where we will add sabnzbd.
    Select add>sabnzbd

    • name = sabnzbd
    • api key = (found in sabnzbd config>general)

Next if you are using a media front end such as Kodi or Plex, you will want to select client and add what pertains to you. This will enable Sonarr and Radarr to update your library when a download is completed.

    Repeat for the additional service.

That’s it, apart from some fine tuning according to your preferences, everything should be up and running.

I hope that this guide was helpful, and that you get good use out of it. I am planning on making a video to go along with it, and I will post that as soon as it’s available.

I’m also happy to receive feedback on how this guide can be improved, or on any mistakes that you may have noticed.

These are the sources I used in creating this guide. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without credit to these guys.

In 2016, the Federal Court ordered ISPs to block five popular torrent websites including The Pirate Bay, TorrentHound and IsoHunt within 15 business days. Since then, a swathe of additional sites have been added to the block list in a bid to eradicate piracy.

Torrenting itself is completely legal of course, and it’s not all that difficult to circumvent ISP blocking of torrent websites. For instance, you can do it through a VPN, which often requires a monthly subscription fee. Here are some ways to gain access to blocked torrent sites for free.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

Is It Legal To Access ISP-Blocked Websites?

Last week, the Federal Court of Australia ordered internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to five major torrent websites. This was a result of court action taken by rights holders Foxtel and Village Roadshow in their desperate fight against piracy. But here’s the thing. it’s incredibly easy to bypass any site-blocking implemented by ISPs. So is it legal for Australians to access the blocked websites locally? Let’s find out.

It’s not illegal to use a VPN to access the blocked sites but the Village Roadshow co-chief executive Graham Burke doesn’t seem too concerned about that. He thinks most people wouldn’t want to fork out money for a VPN.

And he may be right. VPNs aren’t that expensive (some cost less than $US10 a month), but that’s still money you didn’t need to spend before.

Luckily, there are ways to bypass the ISP blocking of the five torrent sites for free.

If It Is Just Simple DNS-Level Blocking

ISPs can use DNS blocking, IP address blocking, URL blocking or any other technical method (so long as the rights holders are happy with it) to block access to the torrent websites. DNS-level blocks are extremely easy to bypass; you can do it in a pinch.

As far as we know, Telstra, which started using this method to restrict access to The Pirate Bay on December 20. Maybe the telco is deliberately using this method so that users can easily bypass it.

One of the easiest ways to bypass DNS-level blocking of a website is by using Google Public DNS. All you need to do is go into your network settings and change your DNS server address to the Google Public DNS address.

    On Windows 10 PCs:

    1. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center. On the left hand panel, click Change adapter settings
    2. Right-Click on the connection type (could be Ethernet or Wi-Fi) of your choosing and go to Properties
    3. Scroll down the list of items to find Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Click on it once to select it and then click Properties.
    4. Near the bottom of the box is “Use the following DNS server addresses”. Select that option and type in 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4
    5. Click OK and you’re done.

The process is very similar on Windows 7/8/8.1 and even Mac computers as well. You just locate the Network settings and change the DNS server address.

We don’t know what type of blocking method other ISPs will use but the following options should be enough to bypass a number of site-blocking techniques.

    Use The Tor Network

ISPs are only required to block the torrent websites that host the .torrent files. These .torrent files contain the file metadata and tracker addresses that let your chosen torrenting software know the multiple sources it can get a particular file from, be it a movie, a TV show, a recent Linux distro or a piece of open-source software. When you torrent a file, it comes in dribs and drabs from users around the world who are seeding the file.

The key point here is the torrent websites themselves don’t host any actual content – they just host the .torrent files that tell you where you can get it. For this reason, you just need to bypass the site-blocking far enough to get to the .torrent files.

The Onion Router (Tor) can get you there. It’s a global network of servers that is generally used by people who want to browse the internet anonymously. When you use the Tor browser software, you’re moving your traffic across Tor servers which makes it hard to track your IP address, and more importantly, hard to block you.

The Tor network has a lot of similarities to BitTorrent but it can be a bit slow and isn’t suitable for file sharing. Good thing that web browsing is all we need to do here. Tor acts as the middle man who can fetch the .torrent file and covertly deliver it to you.

Tor can be a bit intimidating for people to get into. The good news is there an easy way to connect to the network using a software package called Tails. It works on Windows, Linux and Mac OS and lets you connect to Tor without going through any tricky browser configuration processes.

    You can get Tails here.

It’s worth noting there was recently a critical security flaw that was found in Tor browser that has since been patched.

VPN Through Amazon Web Services (AWS)

For those who don’t mind a more technical option, you can always set up a VPN on AWS and tunnel the traffic to the torrent sites through it.

The AWS Free Tier lets you try out some services on the public cloud platform over a 12-month period for free. You’ll need to deploy the OpenVPN Amazon Machine Image (AMI) in EC2, which is free on the AWS Marketplace as a Community AMI. It can be a laborious process but here’s the full instructions from OpenVPN to help you through it: Click here. Make sure you choose to deploy it in a location outside Australia.

You’ll eventually end up with a working OpenVPN virtual server. From there you’ll need to get the OpenVPN client software, also free, onto your computer to connect to your very own VPN.

The AWS Free Tier has an outgoing traffic limit of 15GB per month but, again, we’re only interested in getting the .torrent files from the blocked websites, and they’re only a few kilobytes each. Just turn off the VPN once you start torrenting the actual file.

Just remember that the AWS service will continue to run even after the trial period has ended and will start charging you once the 12 months is up.

    Off-The-Shelf VPN Service

Just want a quick and easy solution that will work straight away? Here is a list of VPN services that you can sign up for.

It’s not a comprehensive list and everybody has their own preferences. But if you’ve never used a VPN before and just want to see some of the options available, it’s a good place to start.

Why I Refuse To Feel Guilty For Torrenting Game Of Thrones

One year ago my brother in-law and I made a decision. We wanted to do the right thing. We wanted to try and pay to watch Game of Thrones season 5. Analyse that sentence for a second. I’ll add some italics for emphasis. “We wanted to try and pay to watch Game of Thrones.”

Lastnight I had PUA.Optional.OpenCandy removed with GeekSquad whom warranties my computer, they got rid of it. Supposedly.

Now I have PUM.Optional.DisableShowSearch, and I don’t feel like dealing with them for 2 hours again so soon. For the exact same result.

Malwarebytes picked it up and said it removed it, I also have Webroot which was the only AV that would work on my system with it’s age.

I have TDSSKiller, Norton Power Eraser, AdwCleaner, Junk Removal Tool, Used sfc /scannow

Malwarebytes keeps picking it up though it said it’s removed a bunch of times, Webroot hasn’t picked a damn thing up like usual, none of the others have aswell.

    I am running on Windows 7 x64 SP 1

All of this came from BitTorrent/Utorrent clients which I manually removed from the program panel.

Seeking Help From Multiple Sources Warning

Fixes from multiple sources may conflict and cause more problems than they solve. In addition, there are far more users needing help than there are helpers; if you are going to get help somewhere else, my time would be better spent helping someone else. You are welcome to keep getting help from Geek Squad but if so I will not provide further help. If you choose to keep getting help here I must ask that you do not seek further help elsewhere while this topic is open.

Also, for your future reference TDSSKiller and sfc /scannow are not everyday use tools. Anti-rootkit scans like TDSSKiller have a high risk of false positives and improper use can damage your computer. scf /scannow is not a tool for removing malware. In fact, it should not be used unless there is a known reason for using it.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

Without a doubt, qBittorrent is our favorite torrent client on Windows 10. As a free and open-source client, we’ve found it to be reliable, fast, and complete without any sort of advertisements, malware, or any other unwanted software included during installation. In fact, from a fresh install, QBittorrent is well put together and will download torrent files quickly enough without having to modify any settings.

That said, there’s are always advantages to be gained with a little tinkering and QBittorrent is no different. With a few specific tweaks, you could increase your download speeds significantly. If you’re all about marginal gains, this post will show you the best QBittorrent settings for faster downloads.

The actual speed you achieve depends on the health and speed of the torrent file you’re downloading but if you do all you can to grease the wheels on your side, should a new faster peer arrive, you’re already set to take advantage of it. Follow these tweaks to maximize download speed in QBittorrent.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

    Set Your Download Speed

It may seem counterintuitive but if you set the download speed of QBittorrent to 80% of your maximum download speed it can help you download faster. It is important to make sure you perform the speed test with your VPN enabled as you will always download using it.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

    1. Enable your VPN.
    2. Type ‘speedtest’ into Google and use the built-in speed tester, or use a trusted source like Speedtest.net to receive your speed benchmarks.
    3. Run the test and note your maximum download speed.
    4. Open QBittorrent and select Tools.
    5. Select Options and Speed.

In this settings menu you’ll find global rate limits for most downloads—i.e., when you want qBittorrent to be running at full speed. If you want to permanently have caps on your uploads and downloads, you can set them here; they’re turned off by default. Your alternative rate limits are automatically set to a sensible 5mb/s down, 1mb/s up, though these can also be edited. The alternative rate limits are accessible, as mentioned above, by hitting the shortcut in the lower half of the main display, or by scheduling the user of alternative rate limits within this settings menu.

Limiting connections and peers helps manage the overhead involved in handling so many connections. You can check the peers display within QBittorrent and drop the slow ones or those who download but don’t share.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

    Set Your Port

Bittorrent clients are one of the few programs left where you need to manually select and forward a port. Most other programs play nicely with NAT and firewalls so you no longer need to do this, bit torrent is an exception.

First we need to see if the default port is open. We can then either change it or forward it as you see fit.

How to run utorrent as a service « how-to geek forums

    1. Open QBittorrent and select Tools. Options and Connections.
    2. Located the port used for incoming connections.
    3. Visit this website and enter the port you want to check in the box. Hit Check Port when ready.
    4. Manually set a port in QBittorrent if you like, preferable within the 49160-65534 range as others are used by other programs or are blocked by some ISPs. Run the test again to see if the port is open.

If the port is open then you’re golden. No more action is necessary. If the port is not open, make sure you have allowed QBittorrent through your firewall and forward it in your router. Different firewalls do things in different ways but you want to allow QBittorrent to send and receive traffic.

Of course, if your firewall is blocking your downloads, you’ll need to add them to your whitelist. Using Comodo Firewall as an example, select Tasks, Firewall Tasks and Allow Application. Navigate to the QBittorrent.exe file and select it to be allowed. Any port used by QBittorrent will pass through the firewall without being slowed or blocked. Port forwarding is a meaty subject and Portforward.com has some extensive guides on getting bit torrent to play nicely.

    Selecting Seeders and Peer Sources

Seeders are the people sharing the file and peer sources are the systems that help share them. Peer sources are usually DHT or PEX and ideally you should help find quality peers.

    1. Open QBittorrent and select Tools.
    2. Select Options and Bit Torrent.
    3. Ensure DHT and PEX are checked and enabled.
    4. Uncheck Local Peer Discovery unless you’re on campus or a huge LAN.
    5. Set Encryption mode to Prefer encryption while you’re there.

Encryption helps hide your activities from ISPs but is no substitute for a VPN. It helps widen the pool of available peers though so it helps to have it enabled.

Selecting peers is about choosing those that have a high seed to peer ratio. Ideally, most of the available peers would have 100% of a file and the ratio of peers to seeders would be healthy. For example, 100 peers to 50 seeders means a ratio of 2:1 Which is healthy. If it were 500 peers to 10 seeders, it would not be so healthy.

QBittorrent is one of the most stable torrent clients we found when it came to downloading content. As long as our clients weren’t set to alternative rate limits, downloads were fast to process and finish on our side, with download speeds reaching several megabytes per second quickly (essentially as fast as our connection could handle).

Obviously, the speed of each download will depend on the health of your torrent and the number of seeders, but rest assured things were positive with qBittorrent in our download. If you decide to stop seeding or downloading a torrent, the application gives you an option to delete the content off your hard drive, a great setting that makes it easy to choose whether or not to keep your platform going.

We’re big fans of qBittorrent, and before any other clients, we’d recommend checking out qBittorrent first. The settings, the speed, and the ease of setup make it the app to beat for downloading your torrents.

You may need to manually remove the program from the Add/Remove Programs list if you uninstall a program and the registry key that is used to display the program name is not removed correctly:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.

Locate and click the following registry key:

After you click the Uninstall registry key, click Export Registry File on the Registry menu.

In the Export Registry File dialog box, click Desktop in the Save in box, type uninstall in the File name box, and then click Save.

Each key under Uninstall represents a program that appears in Add/Remove Programs. To determine which program that each key represents, click the key, and then view the following values:

DisplayName – the value data for the DisplayName key is the name that is listed in Add/Remove Programs

UninstallString – the value data for the UninstallString key is the program that is used to uninstall the program

After you identify the registry key that represents the program that is still in Add/Remove Programs, right-click the key, and then click Delete.

After you delete the key, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.

In Add/Remove Programs, verify that the program for which you deleted the registry key is not listed.

  • The biggest single factor I’ve found is the quality of the seeds. I’ve had torrents downloading large Wikipedia XML files running as fast as 600-800 Kbps while at the same time, torrents with a comparable number of seeds are as slow as .05 to 10 Kbps. A couple of seeders that haven’t restricted their uploads makes a hell of a difference.

I think user upload/download ratios have an impact, but I’m not sure how.

  • No, your Internet is capped at a certain speed. You cannot download any faster than what that amount is. If you pay more, you can probably get bumped up to a faster speed tier.

Both Ethernet and Airport will far exceed whatever internet service you can get in your house.

Not 100% true. I’m using Motorola sb6120 modem which is docsis 3.0 and I double my Internet speed that I pay for.

You’ll get faster download using ethernet than wifi. And when torrenting speeds depend on the seeders/leechers ratio. Higher leechers to seeders will slow you down and or speeders can lower their seeds to 5kb which is the slowest you can seed.

And I just saw this thread is from 2008.

  • Well, I have 100Mb/s internet service. This equals to about 12.5MB/s actual download.

Connected with a 1Gb/s wire. This equals out to about 125MB/s theoretical speed.

So my wire is capable of 125MB/s but my ISP has me limited to 12.5MB/s.
802.11n wireless should not limit you either.

With the avg internet speed of most people being in the 6-20Mb/s range, then 802.11G is still fast enough. @ 54Mb/s
Some would still be ok with 802.11b it’s max is 11Mb/s.

I’ve tested my iMac which is still 3ft from my router downloading wirelessly or wired and I still hit my download speed cap with either. Now if I am in the living room or bedroom on my laptop, I’ll come close to reaching my advertised speed.
I’d say if you are somewhere where you can plug in ethernet, then use it.

I feel like an idiot now, wish I saw the 2008 datestamp.

By “double my internet speed that I pay for” do you mean you are able to achieve faster speeds than your carrier quotes?

I don’t see where I said anything that wasn’t 100% true, unless you’ve somehow got 100 Megabits of internet coming into your house which certainly will be bottlenecked by Wi-Fi. I wasn’t talking about the lucky guys with Verizon Fios

Sure you can probably get crazy expensive internet that is faster than Wireless-N, but we’re talking a realistic consumer here, not a business line.

only IF your internet is faster than your Wi-Fi can transfer data.
My 1.5 Megabyte per second (12Mbps) internet line can easily cap out on Ethernet and Wi-Fi and I see no difference whatsoever in speeds. But, I still prefer Ethernet because I’m a geek and we like running cables that say CAT-6 on them.

I guess most of this information will pertain to the 90% of consumers that have regular old cable internet and pay for the regular internet tiers. The other 10% that have big juicy 50Mbps internet can and do benefit from all ethernet.

  • If you are having reception issues over WiFi, then obviously the wire is better. Theoretically, neither should be the limitation. But, there are a lot of things that could cause interference with WiFi. Before I got an N Airport Extreme, I was using a cheap G D-Link router that had connection problems whenever it rained or the microwave was turned on (2.4 ghz is free spectrum for a reason; it’s the resonate frequency of water and is greatly affected by rain and humidity, and because of that, it’s also the frequency of microwaves that work by exciting water molecules). So, it could be your connection, but it’s unlikely.

It’s more likely to be a difference between the torrent clients you’re using. uTorrent is far more efficient in using system resources than Azureus/Vuze, which can bring a good computer to a crawl thanks to the nightmare that is Java. If the system is expending too many resources trying to run the software and run-time environment, it stands to reason download speeds would slow. Transmission shouldn’t be too bad though, but I’ve always found it a little worse than uTorrent.

If you really want to test though, you’d need to try uTorrent or Transmission both wirelessly and wired with the same swarm. Start eliminating variables, and you’ll find your answer.

    Javarod

Ok, i haven’t been ’round much since i bought the computer, and sorted out the beginning problems, but here i am. I’ve settled into W7, and getting used to the differences between it and OS X, but i still need to get a bit more software, and i’m here for suggestions, so here goes.

Live Journal client, is there anything other than Semagic? It works, but i don’t like it.
Image management, i don’t need much, Windows Live Photo Gallery is enough for most of what i do, except for one problem, it doesn’t doe .GIF files
Image modification, on OS X i used a program, ImageWell IIRC, a simple resizing program, is there anything like that for Windows?
Decompression, i’m using WinRAR, but don’t really like it. On OS X i used The Unarchiver, a simple headless program that efficiently did everything but password protected files, anything like that?
Instant Messenger, i’m using Trillian, but i’m not all that impressed by it, i miss AdiumX
Networking, how does one get Windows to recognize OS X (and why isn’t this built in like on OS X, can’t we all just get along?)?

Aside from that, i think i’m in good shape, got AV software, browser (Firefox), email (T-bird), music (iTunes), movies (VLC Player and QuickTime) and torrents (U Torrent), unless someone wants to recommend something else, maybe DVD ripping software (far as i know, that’s legal for the DVDs i own, right?).

    Mumbodog

There is nothing like AdiumX for windows, here is one that has similar functionality but ugly.

oldie but goodie, may have to use compatibility mode when installing and using

    lagunasrfr

    Hughv

    Javarod

Ah yes, Pidgin, looked at that first, since it and AdiumX run the same core. Sadly Pidgin is not much of a program, and is definitely worse than Trillian. Miranda has been recommended to me, but looking over the website, i have to say i’m rather underwhelmed.

The freeware thread looks interesting, i’ll definitely be spending a chunk of my spare time looking through it tomorrow. What i’m looking for doesn’t necessarily have to be freeware, much of what i used on the Mac was shareware, and frankly, if it does the job, then its fine if i have to pay for it.

Picasa. isn’t that a web site like Photobucket? At the moment i don’t have time to look, but that’s what i thought it was.

Any how, thank y’all for the suggestions, i’ll definitely take a look when i’ve a bit more time.

Picasa is software. But has the ability to share your photo albums on the web thru Google.

You sure are picky about your software.

For image management I’d go with Fast Stone, its free (most of it) and its pretty good for resizing, cropping; etc. It shows thumbnail view too, which I’ve grown to like.

Personally, I don’t like uTorrent. Its fast, its effective, but. at least for me, it never seems to want to uninstall when it comes time. (I do a lot of experimenting with my computer and reload backups kind of often, I usually uninstall a lot of programs first though).

I like Bit torrent, although I don’t like it near as much as Tornado for Linux. There’s Bit Comet too, which isn’t as fast in my experience, but it is friendlier than uTorrent and Bit Torrent. With uTorrent too, when I was doing tutoring with Geek U Malware removal, they use it in their logs as a problem to remove program. Maybe this is a Windows specific problem, I don’t know to be honest. but I’ve grown wary of it personally.

I don’t work much with image libraries so I can’t suggest a specific program. If you use flickr, they have software to upload photos and I believe it does some librarian type work. If you just want to see your photos and be able to edit them, Fast Stone like I said, shows thumbnails of the folder you’re in and lets you edit them. It does this without importing a library too. I never liked the idea of having the same photo, song, or video “indexed” in libraries across more than one program myself.

I can suggest some ripping software, but it isn’t free. Cyberlink Power2Go is working very well for me, not for video but for iso’s, but it does it all and the way that it loads, closes, performs the tasks I do, I think it is a quality program.

A note on Firefox, I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. And Secunia PSI. Each has a vulnerability scanner to notify you of potential exploit points in files. Firefox is reported in both and this was despite what configuration I chose to use. I decided to go with Google Chrome. It has incognito windows to prevent cookie loads (though you have to select to open incognito windows) and the “plug ins” is in late beta stages. I used the beta too, and although not all the plugins worked (mostly the ones most people wouldn’t need or use like Japanese Word of The Day) the major ones went smooth and they were convenient.

In terms of compression, 7-zip is awesome. I didn’t like Winrar either.

I haven’t tried trilliun, though I’ve been seeing buzz on the net. Pidgin is what I use, it connects to IRC and all other major clients. I like the portability of it in that way. It is ugly though.

How To Add Custom Content To Sims 4

What is Custom Content and how does it make the game more fun?

The Sims series was designed to be diverse, with multitudes of options for gameplay, one option being downloading custom content (CC). CC is as old as the series itself, and includes everything from clothing recolors to full-on game-changing content that lets you micromanage the entire world.

I’m a big fan of CC. I can’t really play without it anymore. To me, it enhances the game and makes things just better. All the annoying things that you don’t like about the game are most likely modded to improve them. Feel like there are not enough traits to choose from? Add more! Hate the mosaic when your Sims shower? Get rid of it! Tired of your Sim moving around in Create a Sim? There’s a mod for that too! Seriously, a mod exists for almost everything, and for me, they make the game all the more playable. Now for a long time I didn’t use CC—not because I was a purist who thought it tainted the gameplay experience, but because I didn’t know how to download it.

    (Plus my dad wouldn’t let me. #youngestchild #Dadfearstheinternet #Simmingsince2000)

If you’re brand spankin’ new to CC and haven’t ever tried to download it before, have no fear. It’s actually really easy and really addictive once you know how.

    How to Add Custom Content

First and foremost, make sure that you have mods enabled in your game. This is easy enough to do: when you launch your game, click on the options menu (top right corner) and click “Game options.” Choose the last option, “Other,” and make sure that the boxes are checked to “Enabled Custom Content and Mods” and “Script Mods Allowed.” Apply the changes, save, and quit the game.

Navigate back to your downloads folder (I usually open 2 file explorer windows at once to easily flip back and forth). Highlight the contents of your extracted folder and hit Ctrl C to copy everything, and then hit Ctrl V to drop the contents into your newly created folder.

That’s it! Launch your game and test out your new CC!

    Is Custom Content Free?

Custom content should always be free. If you are prompted to pay for CC, I beg you to please, go somewhere else. There’s a difference between a modder who offers free content but has an optional “Donate” button—and one who hides their content behind a paywall at all times.

The legality and ethics of this makes it a hot-button issue in the Simming community. A website to give charged CC out for free has even been set up. I won’t go any further into it, but my first sentence stands: custom content should always be free.

The best sites to download Custom Content

As with anything you download onto your computer, please be cautious when downloading custom content. This page on the answers.ea website gives a lot of good information about how to safely use mods and CC.

That being said, here are my favorite places to download CC for The Sims 4:

AroundtheSims. When I was a preteen and would jealously peruse TS1 content (that I wasn’t allowed to download yet). I remember going to Around the Sims for quality CC even then and that was almost 20 years ago! ATS has always had really good stuff, and a lot of it is themed, so when you’re looking you find yourself yearning for items you had no idea you needed!

Modthesims. This is a tried and true site that I’ve been using since The Sims 2.It has good quality modifications that make the game more enjoyable and it’s all free content which has an active forum in case you have a question about specific CC.

MCCC. This is the single most important mod I have ever downloaded for the Sims 4. It gives you complete control over nearly every aspect of the game. You can change the world time, modify your Sims’ moods, tweak population settings, and so many more options it’s overwhelming. MCCC has an older sister for the over 18 crowd as well, but I won’t link it here. Google “Wicked whims” if you’re that curious. (18+ ONLY!)

Lana CC Finds. This one I advise you to use with caution because it’s more or less a database of all things CC. It has content of all kinds, some of which might be hidden behind a paywall. But then again, a lot of it isn’t, so it’s a bit of a craps shoot. I can tell you this much though, I refuse to download something I have to pay for. I have found and downloaded a lot of quality content through Lana’s.

  • Followed a guide to get Transmission working through a VPN and it works great. My VPN provider has opened a certain port for me on their server and the private tracker I use still shows that the port is not open. I assume this has something to do with FreeNAS firewalling the Jail. Would I be correct here, and if so, what do I do about it? Thanks

  • You’re confusing a bunch of stuff here. I’ll do my best to explain it to you, but you should probably brush up on some network basics.

There are two relationships here that I think you are conflating as one.

First, there is the relationship between OpenVPN and your VPN provider. Your VPN provider gave you a bunch of connection information, which is what you got before in the config file for Torguard. Second, there is the relationship between Transmission and the private tracker. The only way they are connected is that the communication between Transmission and the private tracker passes through the tunnel created between OpenVPN and your VPN provider.

The private tracker telling you that “the” port is closed doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. What port? Is the private tracker giving you a port that should be open? Usually, a torrent client can open any port, and it’s self broadcast. That open port allows external clients to connect directly to you, without waiting for you to connect to them. There are better ways of testing if the port is open correctly.

Depending on your VPN provider, all, some, or none of the ports will be open. In other words, the firewalling might be happening at your VPN provider. However, I doubt your VPN provider is blocking any of your ports; that just not very frequently done.

The tracker is just telling me that there isn’t “an open port” for incoming connections. Sorry for not being clear. The VPN provider had to open a port for me that is forwarded from their end to mine to allow incoming connections, as they don’t do this unless you ask them to. I am connected to the VPN, on the server that they have setup to forward and I [now] have set Transmission to listen on the port they are forwarding, but Transmission shows the port as closed and the tracker shows me as “not connectable.” It seems that this may have nothing to be with FreeNAS or Transmission if there is no firewall as you say, which makes sense, IDK why I thought it would be firewalled if it has it’s own IP. duh. I wasn’t using OpenVPN before with this provider, I used whatever their proprietary software is called and they included a config file to allow for the forwarded port. They have assured me that if I use OpenVPN and the correct server, it will just work. and it’s not. If you think that FreeNAS/Transmission aren’t to blame I guess I’ll contact their support people and see if maybe they left out a setting in their OpenVPN config file or didn’t tell me about something extra I have to do to make it work.

:confused:Hi guys I recently ie last week, started CPA and found this great method that can be used to make money with CPA. I say it was great because on 1st try I was able to complete 99.9% of the steps that were given which in many cases doesnt happen with many instructions on how to make money.

However I have found myself stuck on the last part of the 2nd section (couldnt upload my torrent to torrent sites, only managed one) and to make things even worse as you will see down below this really sucked because thats where your suppose to make the money.

All your advice, experience and wisdom is much appreciated.

    1) You need to download uTorrent – this program is free and can be downloaded on their website

    2) Find a HOT topic to base this on. Check out the Upcoming Movie’s list and pick a movie that is coming out in around a month from now. I chose Harry Potter & the deathly Hallows part 2.

    3) Find a trailer for that movie and download it. Use a Youtube downloader to download from Youtube.

    4) Now rename the trailer to something like, “HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 LEAKED INTRO”. The main words in this are “leaked intro”. People would now be more interested.

    5) Create a NEW WINRAR ARCHIVE. You should now have an empty archive with nothing in it.

    6) Now go to your trailer, right click it, and then click “Add to Archive”. You will get a box titled, “Archive name and parameters”. Go to the “Advanced” tab, and then click “Set password”. After you have created your password, click “OK”. Depending on where your output destination was, you should now see that archive you just made.

    7) So, now you have 2 archives. One with the trailer which is password protected and one with nothing in it. Now, open the one with nothing in it and drag the archive with the trailer into it. Click “OK” if you get any message boxes.

    8) Now when you open the archive we FIRST created, you will see that the trailer archive is inside and when you try to watch the trailer, it asks for the password. Yeah? Great.

    9) Now close everything and open the archive we FIRST made. Now, create a NOTEPAD file. In the notepad file, write your password for the locked archive and save it as “READ ME- PASSWORD FOR LEAKED INTRO”.

    10) Make an account with bee4 and upload the text file to some file host. Now, people will have to complete a short survey to download the password. You get paid up to $1 for each download.

    11) Now create another notepad file and put in the download link for your bee4 text file we just uploaded. Then save this file in your ARCHIVE and name it, “READ ME- PASSWORD”. Make sure you do NOT password protect this.

    12) FINAL RESULT – Now when people try to open the trailer, they will be asked to enter a password. They will then read the notepad file (which should not be password protected) and they will visit the bee4 URL to download the password.

    13) You will make money from this every time they download.
How do I actually create a torrent?

Now that you have actually made the whole file, you need to make it a .torrent to start uploading to websites like ThePirateBay.

    1) Open uTorrent. Click “File” and then click “Create new torrent”.

    2) When it says “Select source”, just find where you saved the archive and locate it. Then click “Add File”

    3) Then click “Create and save as”. You will then get a box asking you where you want the .torrent file saved. Just choose DESKTOP.

    4) Now on your desktop, you will see a .torrent file with the uTorrent icon. Inside this torrent is the archive we just built!

    5) Now go to websites like ThePirateBay and create an account with them. Then upload the .torrent file and watch as your money starts rolling in. On your first day, you wont make much but keep it going! (NOW THIS IS WHERE I GOT STUCK)

P.S – If your file gets removed from Thepiratebay, clear cookies, open a new account and repeat same process.

Download Windows XP iso via directly link or torrent:

    Thanks this key worked!

I downloaded the iso to a Dell/Windows 10 laptop, created a completely bootable USB (Rufus), and though it was recognized in the BIOS of an Acer Aspire 5315, and after trying every configuration available I am still presented with ‘No bootable device found’, or ‘Media device failure, check cable’. It had already ‘found’ the USB-HDD device, which was 1st in the boot order, and what cable is this message referring to? I’m ready to give up, and no one thus far has been able to offer a working solution. It’s not the software, it’s the Acer..

    This works exactly as described.

    Enter in serial:

Recovered my T40 that had been running LXLE and was unable to load backup images that I had created back around 2010.

Had to low level delete, repartition, and format the drive, which my backup images could not do. Tried GPARTED, but that failed to create an NTFS that the recovery could deal with. Back in business, thanks.

Finally! An original copy of Windows XP WITH Service Pack 3! It’s sad that Microsoft never made a 64-bit version.

Had no problem installing it in virtualbox!
and the serial that you also gave worked!

Hey thank you for sharing this!
I can’t seem to install XP on my EEpc.. It goes through the motions of loading XP setup but then ends up in recovery mode with only the cmd options. I end up typing ‘exit’ and the loop starts again. :s

Anyone know what to do here? Thanks

just spreading the legs of the word of the gamer that put this in the reviews

also the iso is good, works lovely in virtualbox

@Windows DL the ISO you provided has this file sha1 hash: d13c5746895891ecef84f14886687b25e359980a
looking up a list of windows XP file hashes reveals that that file did not have a valid sha1 hash. The file has been modified (I’m not surprised lol).

For anyone else looking for windows XP x64, make sure to look up file hashes for windows XP cause it might be fake.

Lastly, yes. The copy provided (Windows XP Professional SP3 x86) is indeed legitimate. It’s a volume license BTW.

@technous285 well my OS is windows 10 pro X64 so i don’t have that problem but maybe the 19/01/2038 aka Y2k38 has something to do with that?

got past installing devices, unlike other one i tried

I install this windows, under the impression that it is a legitimate Microsoft installation. During the installation following message popped up:
“The application or DLL C:\Windows\system32\RDPCFGEX.DLL is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.”

After installation, internet explorer would open only and no other sites. No HTTPS site would open. Thinking about reformatting the disk and install someother OS.

    It works really well.

But because I’m having a hard time trying to decide whether I should get x64 or x86, I’m giving it 4 stars. Other then that It runs great.

    working great with serial :
    DP2RT-3B8YR-4JXWB-HHGPK-82FWB
“Do not lend or make illegal copies” KEKW

I agree with the other person about that guy. ( C4rb1n3_Sl1m). He doesn’t even know that making a new partition will wipe your drive unless you don’t use the whole drive and the other partition is smaller than the disk size.
    Anyway, this is great!

Windows update has been removed, this means you cannot manually install any updates if you needed to do so.

This iso is ok for a “quick fix” to try software but i wouldn’t make it a permanent install as it has been messed with.

    ISO worked well.

I slipstreamed the unofficial SP4, every update released by Microsoft, and driverpacks into the iso according to this guide:

Confirmed legit by sha-1 hash, thanks

    works perfectly. thanks internet archive!

    (sitcom credits theme plays)

thanks for the disk image! i’ve lost the iso and i was trying to find a months and i finally find it! thank you a lot! i can finally install windows xp back!

I have downloading fantastic updates from the Microsoft page all OK and activated the copy how Genuine and validated

Xp is not finish continuing for other many years the life of this OS is very long.

    Ports To Forward for Valheim

The incoming ports for Valheim are as follows:

    Valheim – Steam

    • TCP: 27015, 27036

    • Role-Playing Games give you hours on end of game play where you can explore a new world through the eyes of your own character. They tend to be the longest style of game with the most immersive story lines. Popular RPG titles include Skyrim, World of Warcraft, and Fallout.

    Forward Ports for Valheim

When you are playing Valheim you might need to forward some ports in your router. Forwarding ports is a useful trick in gaming because it can really help to make your network connection most stable and frequently even faster. Routers were not designed to allow incoming network requests and some games can play tremendously better if an incoming connection is forwarded through the router to the game.

    Before You Forward a Port

Before you can forward a port you need to know the following things:

    • Your router’s IP address.
    • The IP address of the device that the game will play on: either your computer or your console.
    • A list of TCP and UDP ports to forward.

How to locate your Router’s IP Address
