The iPhone isn’t the only mobile device that can act as your wallet with Apple Pay. The new Apple Watch is also capable of making mobile payments. Here’s what you need to know.
The Apple Watch can do a lot of things. It can be used to communicate with others, view notifications from your smartphone, and even pay for items. That’s right: you can use Apple Pay on the Apple Watch. It’s relatively easy to set up, but the method is slightly different than what you may be used to with your iPhone. CNET’s Scott Stein showed us how it’s done, and it’s pretty straightforward.
Adding a credit or debit card
Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, click Passbook & Apple Pay, and add a new credit or debit card. You can choose to use a card that’s already on file with iTunes or scan in a new one. Either way, it’s a separate authorization process than Apple Pay on your phone: each credit card gets a separate Apple Pay number that can be cancelled independently of your phone.
All you have to do is agree to Apple’s terms of use, click Next, and verify the card with a text message that is sent to your iPhone, or with a phone call; your credit card or bank will offer various options for additional authorization.
The first card you enter will be set as the default. However, this can be changed to a different card from within the app. If you have multiple cards stored on your Watch, you will be able to choose the card you would like to use prior to payment, much like on the iPhone. To delete a card, tap it and select remove within the iPhone’s Apple Watch app settings.
Using Apple Pay
Apple Pay on the Watch is incredibly simple to use. All you have to do is double-tap the side button, select the credit or debit card you would like to use, and hold the face of the watch to the payment terminal. The watch will vibrate, and a check mark will appear on the screen to confirm the payment has gone through. It’s as easy as that. You don’t need additional passwords or Touch ID. The watch asks for a password when it’s taken off your wrist, but as long as it stays attached, you can make payments with that double-click.
If you ever lost your watch, you can de-authorize Apple Pay for that device remotely through iCloud or on your iPhone, and the watch will no longer be able to buy anything. Since the virtual credit card number is de-authorized, the Apple Watch can even be offline and still be cut off from making payments. Obviously, if this were to happen to you, we’d still advise keeping an eye on your credit card statements to be safe.
Speaking of which, one of the best parts about Apple Pay on the Watch is that it’s completely standalone and can still be used when the watch isn’t connected to an iPhone. To learn more about what the Apple Watch can do without an iPhone connection, check out this article from Scott Stein and be sure to read CNET’s full review .

One of the best features of the Apple Watch is Apple Pay. It enables you to make contactless payments straight from the wrist quickly and securely.
More places are now taking contactless, from public transport networks to shops and bars. It’s pretty much standard across Europe and the US is widespread too.
It’s one of the key benefits of the Apple Watch, and a tangible wearable tech feature that everyone can use and enjoy. And as a result, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen equivalents from Google, Fitbit and Garmin all develop and take shape over the course of the past year.
But how do you set up Apple Pay, and where on Earth can you pay with it?
Well, fear not. If you want to know which stores will let you tap and pay with your watch, as well as the restrictions in your territory, read on below.
How to set up Apple Pay on Apple Watch
If you’re an Apple Watch and iPhone user, it may surprise you to know that the two devices work independently of each other, when it comes to Apple Pay.
Despite the symbiotic nature of the two devices, they use individual and unlinked Passbook apps, which means you can use two separate cards. It also means you can pay for stuff without your iPhone present, which is great news if you’re out for a run, or nipping to the shop for some milk.
The process is exactly the same. On the Apple Watch app (on your iPhone) you need to fire up the Wallet & Apple Pay app. You can then choose to Add Credit or Debit card. If you want to set up on your iPhone, you do this through the Wallet app on your handset.
If you haven’t set up a passcode on the Apple Watch, you will be prompted to do this. Apple Pay won’t work without it, so that would-be thieves can’t make payments from your smartwatch.
Once that’s all set up, the process is fairly straightforward. You scan your card using your phone’s camera, then update any missing information.
Once you finish, you’ll be sent an email or SMS with a verification code – which you need to enter into the phone app. Once verified, a confirmation that you’re ready to go will pop up on the Apple Watch.
How do I use Apple Pay on Apple Watch?
Now you’re all set up, it’s time to start splashing the cash from the wrist.
On the Apple Watch, just approach the contactless receiver – be it at a store front counter or a London Underground barrier – and tap the side button.
A picture of your card will appear, and it’s ready to go. Just hold your Apple Watch to the card reader and you should hear a tone (or feel a vibration) and receive a tick on the watch face instantly.
For iPhone users, the NFC chip should fire up the Passbook app when it’s close to the contactless reader. The difference here, though, is that you’ll first need to verify things through Touch ID or Face ID – on the Watch, you’re verified simply by having the device on the wrist after entering your PIN.
Where can I use my Apple Watch to pay?
In terms of territories, Apple Pay is now available in 30 countries, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, UK, Ireland and the USA. Even the Vatican City is now involved, meaning the Pope himself can harness the power of contactless wrist payment.
And countries such as Germany, Belgium and Saudi Arabia are expected to receive the feature before the end of the year, after Brazil, Poland, Ukraine and Norway were recently added to the list.
There’s a solid infrastructure in place, too. Take the UK as an example, where more than 250,000 card machines are capable of NFC transactions. As Apple Pay on Apple Watch uses that existing system, all merchants who’ve already got one installed should already find that people can tap and pay with their smartwatch.
So, the bottom line: expect to be able to do it wherever you normally might be able to with a credit or debit card.
How much can I spend?
In the US, the contactless payment limit is usually set to $25, though this can vary depending on your bank. For example, Apple itself indicates that purchases of more than $50 may require a signature. The standard contactless limit with an NFC card is £30 in the UK, but it’s widely known that half of terminals in the country support transactions of any amount.
Apple Pay through the Apple Watch involves that PIN authorisation when you first put the smartwatch on, and that added safety means that retailers are free to ditch the contactless limit should they wish to.
Boots in the UK, for example, confirmed early on that it will allow payments of any amount using your Apple Watch, and now Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Pizza Express, Nando’s and more have followed. It will, however, require the merchants to upgrade from the standard NFC equipment which they already have installed, so don’t expect it from everyone.
For those outside the UK and US who need a little more info on just what limits are in store, check out Apple’s support page. Generally, though, the same rules apply – limits may exist to tolerate older NFC tech, but this should increasingly become less of a problem.
Apple Pay v Apple Pay Cash
So, what’s the difference here? Well, while we’ve gone into depth elsewhere about how to use Apple Pay Cash, it’s worth pointing out the difference it holds to Pay here, as well.
Essentially, while Apple Pay is the Cupertino company’s platform for contactless payments, allowing you to digitise your wallet, Apple Pay Cash is its way of simplifying peer-to-peer payments. If you need to send your friend $10, for example, you can do this through iMessage by using Cash. Once you do, this will be represented in Wallet and free for the person to use instantly — forming the money into what’s basically a pre-paid debit card.
Apple’s two payment systems work concurrently with one another, and can both be used from the Apple Watch or your iPhone.
Apple Pay is one of the easiest and the safest way to make payments. If you are a proud owner of the Apple Watch, making payments right from your wrist is very much possible. You just need to add your card to Apple Watch and start making payments.
To make things easier for you, we have divided this guide into two parts: Adding a card to Apple Watch for using Apple Pay, and using Apple Pay from your Apple Watch to make payment. Just head south and follow instructions.
How to set up Apple Pay on Apple Watch
Step #1. Launch the Watch App on your iPhone and head over to My Watch tab.
Step #2. Now tap on Wallet & Apple Pay and then tap Add card under payment cards.
Step #3. Tap Continue. Now tap Enter Card Details Manually or use your iPhone to scan the details automatically.
Step #4. Enter your card’s Security Code and tap Next and then tap Add.
Step #5. Now tap on Confirm after reading and confirming terms and conditions from your bank.
Step #6. You need to pass the verification and to do that, tap on either Text Message, E-mail, or Call option.
Step #7. Tap Next and then enter the Verification Code that you received.
Step #8. Tap Next and then tap Done. If everything went fine, you’d see Card Activated screen.
That’s it. Your card is now successfully added, and you’ll receive a confirmation from your bank. Now let’s see how you can use this newly added card to make payments using Apple Pay from your Apple Watch.
How to use Apple Pay on Apple Watch
Using default card to make payment
Step #1. From few centimeters away from the contactless reader, click side-button twice on your Apple Watch and tap and hold the display.
Step #2. In a few seconds you’ll feel a gentle tap on your wrist; this is to confirm the payment. After you are done, press the Digital Crown to go back to the watch face.
Using the different card to make payment
Step #1. Same as using default card, few centimeters away from the contactless reader, click side-button twice on your Apple Watch and then tap and hold the display.
Step #2. Now you can swipe left or right to choose the card you wish to use. Hold the watch near reader after you select the card.
Step #3. Same like the above method, you’ll feel a gentle tap on your wrist. Press Digital Crown to get back to watch face.

Apple Pay Cash launched with last week’s release of iOS 11.2 for iPhone and iPad, and watchOS 4.2 for compatible Apple Watch devices. Check out this video to learn how to set up the feature on Apple Watch.
Upon installation of watchOS 4.2, users will see an Apple Pay Cash option within the Watch app’s Wallet settings on a paired iOS device. Simply switch the option to the on position and sign in with your Apple ID.
When the Apple Pay Cash prompt shows up, tap “Continue,” and iOS will automatically start setting it up. Once it’s complete, you will see your Apple Pay Cash card alongside any other cards connected to your Watch. Tap on the card to find more information and settings, including an option to verify your identity to make sure there are no issues sending cash through the service.
Your Apple Pay Cash card should now show up in your Apple Watch’s Wallet. From here, you can swipe up to view your card balance and double click to pay at any store that supports Apple Pay.
At the bottom of a conversation in Messages, you’ll see a new Apple Pay button. Tapping on it will allow you to adjust the payment amount. Tapping on the “Pay” buttong will trigger a prompt to double click the side button, which sends the payment. Processing should only take a few moments.
If the payment says “Pending,” it could mean that the other user hasn’t set up Apple Pay Cash on their device. In such cases, tap on the Apple Pay Cash image in a Messages thread, hit view payment information, and cancel the payment.
When it works correctly, you can tap on the Apple Pay Cash image to confirm that a payment is complete.
On the receiving end, the user should see a message confirming that the payment was sent. They can then tap on the icon within Messages to view payment information.
Friends might also request a payment from Messages, which can be authenticated and paid directly from Apple Watch. You can adjust the payment amount if you’d like, then double click to pay.
Finally, if you head into Wallet app, you can check the balance of your Apple Pay Cash Card.

Something New
Whether shopping online or in person at a store, the Apple Watch combined with Apple Pay is a convenient and easy way to pay for purchases.
Apple Pay is a convenient and quick way for to pay for goods and services, and the Apple Watch can make the entire process even quicker and easier. While the company’s wearables are known for their various health-related benefits and features, they are capable of doing so much more, including making mobile payments when shopping online or in person at a store.
Apple first announced its mobile payments solution back in late 2014. However, Apple Pay was somewhat limited in terms of store support at the time. That has changed over the years, with Apple Pay now widely available to use when shopping and even when traveling. The very first Apple Watch was announced at the same time as Apple Pay, and while the wearable has gained plenty of features since then, Apple’s smartwatches came with Apple Pay support since the very beginning.
Providing Apple Pay has already been set up on an iPhone, then actually using an Apple Watch to pay for goods and services is fairly easy to do. If using the default card, the wearer simply needs to double-click the side button on the smartwatch and position the Apple Watch near the contactless payment terminal. Ideally, the smartwatch display and the payment reader should be facing each other. Within a few seconds the user should feel a gentle tap (and possibly hear a beep) to confirm the connection was made and the payment was sent. The user is also likely to receive a notification in the Notification Center confirming the transaction successfully took place.
Additional Points To Note When Paying With Apple Watch
The instructions above represent the quickest and easiest way to use Apple Pay with an Apple Watch. However, there may be occasions when the process is slightly more involved. For example, Apple does explain that Watch wearers may occasionally need to enter a PIN or sign a receipt depending on the amount of the transaction and the requirements of the store. Likewise, if wanting to use a card other than the default one, the wearer will need to select the right card before making the payment. To change the card on an Apple Watch, simply double-click the side button, but this time scroll down and tap on the correct card before positioning the smartwatch close to the payment reader.
On occasions when the Apple Watch is being used to shop online, the user just needs to select the Apple Pay option in the app when checking out. Then just continue through the checkout process s normal by reviewing the order before double-clicking the Apple Watch’s side button to complete and pay. Whether shopping online or in person, the Apple Watch can take care of the entire transaction without the wearer having to even pull out an iPhone, let alone a physical wallet.

If you lose your phone, call immediately the Deactivation Service to deactivate your details. However, unauthorised persons won’t be able to see your card details or pay with your phone without identification which is only possible with your face or fingerprint.
If you lose your card, call immediately the Deactivation Service. If necessary, you can get a new card available on Apple Wallet right away so you don’t need to be without a card at all.

Paying for things with an Apple Watch is super convenient. Once you’ve tried it, it can be hard going back to card payments! You don’t need to reach for your wallet or phone, and with the current pandemic, it’s nice that you don’t need to touch the potentially contaminated payment terminal.
Want to know how to set up this neat feature? We’ll walk you through that process so that you can shop at the local store with a turn of the wrist.
Add a card to Apple Pay on your Apple Watch
There are two ways to go about adding a credit or debit card to Apple Pay on your Apple Watch, but they’re both uncomplicated and share similar steps. Be sure to have your payment card and iPhone ready and ensure that your card provider supports Apple Pay. You may also need the official app for your bank or card company.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
- If you’ve already added at least one card on another Apple device, tap it here and enter the card’s security codes. Otherwise, follow the next steps to enter a new card.
- Tap Add Card.
- You’ll have the option of either scanning the card or entering its digits manually. In both cases, you’ll need to add security codes.
- Tap Next. Your bank or card provider will need to verify the card before it can be used. This sometimes requires an app from the card provider, but the verification is usually quick once that app is ready.
- You might also need to verify that it’s you by receiving an SMS and entering a numerical code. Again, this is very quick and easy.
- Once the card is verified, tap Next to enable Apple Pay for that card.
- If you have multiple cards, be sure to return to Wallet & Apple Pay and tap Default card to choose the card you prefer to use for most transactions.
Use Apple Pay for retail purchases
Once you’ve set up Apple Pay on your watch, using it is typically very simple. There are some things to consider depending on where you live and what you’re buying, however.
- When ready to pay, double-tap the side button on your watch. Your default card should appear. You can swipe left and right to switch cards.
- Turn the watch screen toward the payment terminal and get up close. You’ll hear a sound, feel a tap and see a confirmation on the screen if the payment completes successfully.
- Many countries have transaction limits for Apple Pay, so you may need to use your physical card for large purchases.
- You may still need to sign a receipt or enter a PIN code.
- If you’re using Apple Cash, you’ll still have to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. If asked for a PIN, any four-digit code will work.
Use Apple Pay on your Apple Watch to confirm purchases in apps or in Safari
You can also use your Apple Watch to approve Apple Pay purchases on other devices, either in apps or on the web using Safari. You won’t often need this on an iPhone, iPad, or Touch ID-equipped Macs, but it’s useful to know.
- Tap the Apple Pay button in the app or website when you’re ready to buy.
- Enter or verify your billing and shipping information, and tap > next to your card if you want to use a different payment card.
- Confirm the payment by double-tapping the side button on your watch. You’ll receive a confirmation on your watch screen if the purchase is completed successfully.
Make easy and secure payments in seconds.
