Unlike certain other animal based movies we won’t mention, Sing is hitting it out of the park. The animal based musical has grossed $429.7 million since release. Therefore, it’s not surprising that Illumination has announced that Sing 2 will be coming to cinemas in 2020.
Sing; a happier alternative to Animal Farm.
According to Collider.com;
“Universal and Illumination Entertainment are making some changes to their release calendar. In the wake of the enormous success of Sing, which has now grossed $429.7 million worldwide, Illumination has unsurprisingly put Sing 2 on the schedule. The follow-up film will again hit the holiday corridor, as it’s now slated for release on Christmas Day, December 25, 2020. Additionally, The Secret Life of Pets 2 has been pushed from July 13, 2018 to July 3, 2019, nearly a full year, and Minions 2 will drop on July 3, 2020 instead of July 10th.”
Sing is an animal-based animated musical. It follows koala Buster Moon as he hosts a singing contest to try and save his ailing theater. Yet, due to a typo on the posters, Buster ends up promising more prize money than he can afford. If you think this isn’t the kind of movie that would attract a big name cast, you’d be wrong.
Sing’s voice cast is surprisingly A-list. Since it includes Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, and Scarlett Johansson. Between Sing‘s success and Secret Life of Pets, 2016 has been a good tear for Illumination. The company found success with 2010’s Despicable Me yet had trouble stepping outside Gru’s shadow.
Illumination’s 2016 home run looks like the company may finally be hitting their stride. The question is whether they can keep this up. Since their schedule is packed with sequels, they seem to be playing things safe for now.
