Incredible pictures show Spain holiday hotspots hit by two feet of snow & lashed by 25ft waves in winter storm

WINTER storm Juliette turned holiday island Majorca white as it wreaked havoc in the Balearic Islands and mainland Spain.

The unprecedented snowstorms sparked red winter weather alert for the worst-hit areas as roads were closed and towns left without power.

Already 20 inches of snow has fallen in Majorca's mountains and another 15 could fall in the next 24 hours.

Meteorologists have said winds may reach 55mph and the Balearic coast will be pummelled by 26ft waves.

Temperatures have plummeted to -2C, and are expected to remain low for days.

Even Barcelona was covered in a blanket of white today as rain and snow are expected to continue through Thursday.

Majorca residents were urged to stay indoors as roads were closed due to dangerous conditions.

Majorca's emergency services have dealt with nearly 350 incidents due to the snow.

They were called to fallen trees, flooded buildings and roads and stranded drivers in storm-lashed areas.

Fifty people were trapped in a monastery after police were forced to close a road due to inclement conditions.

The snow storm has also led to power cuts in towns across the region, including Valldemossa, Alaró, Vilafranca and Port d'Alcúdia. 

Weather authorities issued an amber alert for rainfall and wind in some areas, with speeds expected to reach up to 50mph.

Airports in the Balearics were reportedly operating normally despite the icy and windy conditions.

It comes weeks after Malaga and party island Ibiza were hit by snow and below-freezing temperatures.

In parts of Catalonia, it dropped to -18C on Monday.

The record for snowfall in Spain was set in 1904, when five feet hit Madrid, crippling the capital city.
