Wildflower may have landed in theaters earlier this year but it has found a new lease of life since it began streaming, prompting viewers to delve into the true story that inspired the film.

Now streaming on Hulu in the US, Wildflower brings to life an emotional and personal story that hits incredibly close to home for the film’s director, Mike Smulker.

Wildflower plot preview

Starring Kiernan Shipka of Mad Men and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fame, Wildflower tells the story of Bea (short for Bambi) who is the daughter of two neurodivergent parents, Derek and Sharon.

During her senior year in high school, an accident leaves Bea comatose, forcing her to explore the intricacies of her life through flashbacks.

Bea delves into her daily struggles of having to juggle her own personal ambitions, such as heading off to college and finding a boyfriend, with caring for her intellectually disabled parents.

After a theatrical release in March, Wildflower was made available on Hulu in the US in June 2023.

Is Wildflower based on a true story?

Yes, Wildflower is indeed based on a true story.

The events of the film are inspired by the story of Christina Stahl, the niece of Wildflower director Matt Smulker.

Much like Bea’s experiences in the film, Christina’s teenage years were spent having to care for her neurodivergent parents, along with the hardships and gleeful moments that came with such a commitment.

Wildflower began life as a short film

Before Wildflower became a full-length feature, the movie started off as a short film that Christina Stahl created to use during her college application process.

Her uncle Matt Smulker helped her with the project and after witnessing the joy and tribulations the family faced, he believed it would be fitting material for an inspirational coming-of-age story.

This fuelled Smulker to direct a feature-length documentary, meant as a companion to Christina’s original short film, which was released in 2020.

However, after showing some footage of the documentary to screenwriting friend Jana Savage, the idea for a full feature was born.
