A Cedar Rapids man has been charged with mistreatment of a corpse following an incident on Interstate 80 on Tuesday.

Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the westbound 187 mile marker on I-80 for a call for help. Police vehicles were seen lined up on the westbound side of the interstate, just east of the Grinnell exit, according to DOT cameras.

According to investigators, at approximately 8:10 a.m., Iowa State Patrol officers noticed a man subject standing outside a silver 2010 Chevy Malibu parked on the shoulder of I-80 just under the 80th St flyover. Jihad Gasaway, 23, was later identified as the suspect. Gasaway informed troopers that his vehicle had stalled and that he needed a jump start.

At this point, troopers noticed that another male subject was in the passenger seat and had died from apparent gunshot wounds.

According to investigators, Gasaway did not tell troopers of the deceased individual and instead attempted to cover him up with various garments in order to conceal the body.
