*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Leave the World Behind* — A lot can rest on the ending of a movie. A film might be a captivating thrill ride for much of its runtime but if it can’t stick the landing, it can leave a bad taste in viewers’ mouths.

Netflix’s newest arrival, Leave the World Behind, has left fans asking, “Is that it?” and whether there will be a sequel after a somewhat abrupt and ambiguous finale.

What is the movie about?

Leave the World Behind tells the story of the Sandford family – Amanda (Julia Roberts), Clay (Ethan Hawke) and their children Rose and Archie – whose vacation to Long Island is interrupted when a pair of strangers arrive at their rented house, GH Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la).

The new arrivals claim to live at the property and bring disturbing news of a cyberattack and blackout that has caused chaos in the outside world.

As the mysterious threat grows ever larger, the two groups must decide how best to survive the looming crisis and the potential collapse of society.

Leave the World Behind’s ending explained

Throughout Leave the World Behind, more details about what has transpired are slowly revealed, beginning with the family losing their cell phone connection and later their TV and wi-fi signals. The latter particularly annoys the Sandford’s daughter Rose as she’s left unable to watch the last episode of Friends as she’d been binge-watching the series.

During a trip to the beach, an oil tanker runs aground, spreading panic and causing them to return to their rented house. Later that night, GH Scott and his daughter Ruth arrive, claiming that the property is theirs and bringing news of a devastating cyberattack.

Strange events continue to occur as the Sandfords find that their car GPS no longer functions while a drone drops flyers with a warning written in Arabic. Later, the family is briefly incapacitated by a deafening shrill noise and when attempting to return to the city, discover that the highway has been blocked by self-driving cars.

One of the most curious phenomena during the movie is that the deer in the local woodland suddenly begin a mass migration.

When Archie suddenly becomes ill, Clay and GH seek out medication from a survivalist named Danny (Kevin Bacon). After a tense standoff, they come to an agreement before speculating on what might be happening out in the world. Danny theorizes that America’s enemies have finally teamed up against them and warns the family to take shelter in a nearby underground bunker.

GH reveals to Clay that he has knowledge of what might be happening after working with a client in the defense sector; a three-stage plan to destabilize the country, ending with a coup d’état that will lead to all-out civil war.

Elsewhere, Amanda and Ruth watch on as New York City is bombed and gunfire can be heard in the distance, confirming GH’s suspicions.

After going missing earlier that morning, the movie’s final scene follows Rose as she enters a large house that neighbors the one they were staying in and discovers the bunker Danny mentioned hidden in its basement.

A warning message flashes up on a computer screen revealing that the White House has been attacked by rogue forces and that nuclear weapons have been used in cities across the country.

She pays the message no attention though as she finds a huge collection of DVDs and pulls out the Friends season 10 boxset to watch the last episode she’d been eagerly waiting to see throughout the whole movie.

Viewers demand a Leave the World Behind sequel after ‘mystifying’ ending

Agonizingly for viewers who want a sequel to Leave the World Behind, the movie is based on a 2020 novel by Rumaan Alam which does not have a follow-up and also ends in a similarly ambiguous fashion.

Despite this, viewers have wasted no time in taking to social media to discuss the movie’s ending and whether Leave the World Behind should return for a part 2.

One fan on X (formerly Twitter) said: “Good movie, horrible ending. Did Netflix run out of money and decide it didn’t need an ending? Is there a sequel coming?”

While a second viewer added: “Just watched Leave the World behind. Pretty good, great cast, the ending was mystifying…”

“Hello, what the hell happened in Leave the World Behind?” asked a third. “What was that ending? Is there a sequel coming?!”

This fan saw the lighter side of the final scene: “The ending is all the justification I need for why I always buy hard copies of movies, TV shows, and games… so I’m not bored when the world collapses.”

“Just watched Leave the World Behind… the ending was sudden but the more I think about it, it does make sense as an ending and it was a good movie,” commented this impressed viewer.

While another was less enthused: “I have to know what else happens in Leave The World Behind! Sequel? C’mon now.”

“Just finished watching Leave the World Behind and I really liked it,” praised this viewer. “The ending is really not disappointing, like why is everyone complaining about it? I love an ambiguous ending, not every movie needs closure. And I feel like they tied everything up anyways.”
