- Loki fans think Sylvie was recast in season 2 because she ‘looks different’.

- Sylvie was inspired by a character from the Marvel comics.
With an infinite number of Variants from across the multiverse, it’s no surprise that there are countless theories concerning the Loki TV series and its characters. Now, Marvel fans around the world are sharing their anger at one theory that Sylvie was recast in Loki season 2 – it’s one that talented and professional female stars know all too well.
Theory on Sylvie’s recast in Loki season 2 is an unfair judgment
The character Sylvie was played by actress Sophia Di Martino in Loki season 1 and she reprised the role as one of the God of Mischief’s countless Variants in season 2.
Unfortunately, it appears that the origin for this replacement theory is one that actresses in leading roles will be all too familiar with: Just because she looks ‘slightly different’ in season 2, she must have been recast.
In reality, the reason why Di Martino’s outward appearance may have ‘changed’ is simply because two years have passed since season 1 debuted in 2021, and the fan favorite actress welcomed her second child in-between seasons.
As one viewer poignantly pointed out, this theory of Di Martino’s Sylvie being recast just because of her character’s updated appearance, is in stark contrast to the perception of fellow leading cast member Tom Hiddleston.
“If you wanted to be really nitpicky, why not point out that this version of Loki doesn’t look quite as young as the one from the 2012 Avengers film,” user JuliasTooSmallTutu countered in a Reddit post on the theory.
Loki was arrested by the TVA moments after he escaped Avengers Tower in the 2012 movie, meaning his appearance should be exactly the same if we are holding both cast members to the same standards.
“He’s also a god and by everyone’s consensus here, shouldn’t have aged as much as he clearly has. We don’t do that though because allowing Hiddleston to age is fine but heaven forbid a woman should look slightly different after having a second baby, that’s of course worthy of an entire sniping session about her looks.”
Di Martino welcomed her second child with partner Will Sharpe in December 2021.
On her Instagram page, the fan favorite actress wrote: “I’ve been hibernating for a while because I’m not pregnant anymore! Yes, I’ve had a baby. This first bit is a wonderful time that is also exhausting and so hard! So my phone has been locked in a cupboard while we figure it all out. There is a lot of love and a LOT of cake. Back soon!”
Thankfully, the production team at Loki went the extra mile to support Di Martino during the filming of Loki season 1 during her pregnancy, such as improving her costume designs to make the situation easier.
In a Twitter post back in July 2021, Di Martino celebrated that “It’s not easy being a working Mama” but that the genius Christine Wada “added concealed zippers so I could pump easily & nurse my baby between takes.”
“Little (big) things like this that made it possible for me to do my job & be a parent. I’m forever grateful.”
Sylvie isn’t Enchantress, but she was inspired by the comics
The idea that Sylvie was recast for Loki season 2 is the latest in a long line of theories, the most popular of which was that she was actually the character Enchantress from the original comics.
However, Di Martino confirmed to the Radio Times after the premiere of season 1 that this wasn’t the case – although Sylvie was inspired by the comics.
“She’s been inspired by the comics, and our story is inspired by the comics, but Loki is a new story, and it’s a new backstory for Sylvie. So it’s an entirely new story. But she is enchanting people, and therefore an enchantress. So… yeah. Who knows?”
Another nod to the comics comes in the form of the McDonalds that Sylvie works at in Oklahoma. Producer Kevin Wright recently explained how “Broxton, Oklahoma’s a little bit of an Easter egg from the comics, there’s a fun little deep dive there. That is a nice reference to the Sylvie Lushton character in the comics, the era… It’s a metaphor.”
“It’s like there’s a nostalgic lens that we look through and it was about finding her at the opposite of an apocalypse. A small town where even at a McDonald’s, people know each other’s name. The McDonald’s thing was like this lens of nostalgia for me and I think for a lot of other people.”
Loki season 2 is airing new episodes on Disney Plus.
