Manhattan, New York City:- Ray’s Manhattan Candy Store’s 90 years old owner Ray Alvarez was beaten by an unknown man outside his East Village shop on 31 January 2023 around 3 a.m. He still didn’t miss a day behind the counter.
He has been running this store since 1974. An unknown man solicited him on the street earlier this week and threatened to kill him. That stranger beat him outside the East village shop.
Ray Alvarez told the New York Police Department that he was approached by a stranger outside his shop and he asked Ray if he wanted to buy a seltzer eater then Ray denied and that stranger ended up whacked in his head with a belt that had a heavy rock at its end.
Ray said to his friend for holding that man and Ray wanted to kill that guy.
Ray said,
“He surprised me and I thought the end of the world, I hit the ground, saw the blood and I thought this looks like the end.”
Ray Alvarez was left bleeding as the suspect ran off along Avenue A. Ray was left with a black eye and he has trouble eating.
Ray Alvarez said,
“This happens, you know, and I still love New York. It’s OK, I’ll be alright, it will pass.”
Ray wants to catch his attacker but the has a job to do so he didn’t take any time off. After a few hours of the attack, he went back to manning his counter.
He is not able to chew because of the gash on the side of his head and has trouble sleeping. Ray said that he didn’t want to go to the doctor.
Not only Ray was attacked even though his employee was also attacked by a suspect but his employee is ok.
Ray’s employee Gabe Thorne said,
“He asked me to do you believe in satan? I had no idea he was going to go for Ray…Ray is everyone’s grandpa. For people who don’t have family around, Ray takes care of everyone. The fact that this happened makes everyone super upset.”
Ray Alvares served in the Iranian navy and oned his hop in New York. He told NBC New York that he was attacked on the job once before.
after Tuestday’s attack on him, people convinced Ray to file a police report. Police released a surveillance image of the suspect from the area who was last seen pushing a shopping cart in the East Village. The investigation is still ongoing.
Ray told the Post on 2 February 2023,
“There is a lot of crime because there are not enough police. We used to have police on foot patrol, walking up and down. No more.”
