Di antara sekian banyak motor 250 cc, ada satu motor yang paling dikenal, yaitu Kawasaki KR-1S. Motor sport ini diklaim sebagai motor 250 cc yang tercepat di dunia.

Padahal, KR-1S lahir di saat sudah banyak pemain di kelas 250 cc, seperti Honda NSR 250 SP, Suzuki RGV 250 SP, Yamaha TZR 250 SP, Aprilia RS 250, dan lainnya. Semuanya saling pamer mesin V-Twin yang sangat bertenaga.

Kawasaki keluar dari arus utama dan malah memamerkan mesin parallel inline-twin. Namun, mesin ini justru yang berhasil meraih penghargaan motor 250 cc 2-tak tercepat di dunia versi majalah Performance Bike Magazines, salah satu majalah yang populer pada masa itu.

Mesin yang digunakan KR-1S mampu membuat motor melaju hingga tembus 225 kilometer per jam. Kecepatan tertinggi tersebut bahkan mengalahkan performa motor 650 cc 4-tak.

Perlu diingat, performa tersebut diraih dalam keadaan mesin standar. Sebab, ada beberapa motor 250 cc 2-tak yang mampu melaju lebih cepat, tapi performa mesinnya sudah ditingkatkan.

Rahasia dapur pacu KR-1S salah satunya adalah penyematan teknologi Nickel Plated Cylinders atau yang sekarang lebih dikenal dengan Kawasaki Super Electro-Fusion Cylinder. Selain itu, disematkan juga E-KIPS (Electronic KIPS).

Ditambah lagi dengan penggunaan sasis Aluminium E-Box Frame. Bobot motor ini setara dengan motor 150 cc, hanya 131 kg. Jadi, power-to-weight ratio motor ini juga membuktikan performanya.

Tapi, ada kelebihan tentu ada juga kekurangan. Menurut berbagai sumber, KR-1S memiliki kekurangan di bagian desain dan handling. Desainnya kurang sangar dan handling kurang baik dibanding kompetitor sekelasnya.
