The mother of the missing 23-year-old Israeli-German Shani Louk has addressed the press after disturbing video footage of her daughter in Gaza was posted online.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine heightened over the weekend after Hamas launched a series of attacks in Gaza on October 7, prompting a strongarmed response from the Israeli Defence Forces. Amidst the widespread unrest, a graphic video circulated online that appeared to show Shani Louk, a missing 23-year-old, being paraded through the Gaza strip – prompting a stirring response from her mother, who has spoken candidly about her daughter’s chance of survival.

Shani was in attendance at Festival For Peace, an outdoor music festival in south Israel some two kilometers from the Gaza border, when troops of supposed Hamas fighters arrived on the premises early on Saturday morning.
The Hamas group proceeded to open fire on the festival-goers while capturing several hostages. Many families are still attempting to contact their relatives, with the reported death toll believed to be in excess of 260.
As the news of the incident spread around the world, troubling footage began to circulate online, in which the semi-naked body of a young woman could be seen laid out on the back of a truck carrying several Hamas soldiers, who paraded through the Gaza strip, appearing to celebrate the capturing.
The figure in the video was Shani, her mother Ricarda has claimed, with the pair having lost contact with one another shortly after the Hamas troops arrived.
Other videos that have appeared on social media platforms such as TikTok appear to show Shani at the festival dancing with her friends, allegedly ‘moments’ before her capture.

Just a day or so after the news from Gaza broke, Ricarda spoke openly to CNN about her experience over the weekend and the moment she saw the bleak footage of her daughter.
When asked if she had see any additional footage of her daughter, Ricarda said: “It’s the last we have seen (of Shani). We are always looking for more videos, more news, something that shows her in some other places and we cannot really see anything yet.”
“We saw that someone tried to use her (Shani’s) credit card multiple times,” Ricarda continued, “that’s all we have. No other clue.”
Ricarda went on to say that Shani had attempted to reach her car to escape the site and she believes it was at this moment that she was captured.
‘I still have hope’, says Ricarda
While she admitted that the footage didn’t harbor much hope, Ricarda says she still attempting to keep a positive outlook on the situation.
“The video looks very bad, but I still have hope,” Ricarda admitted. “I hope that they (Hamas) don’t take bodies for negotiations.
“I hope that she’s still alive somewhere. We don’t have anything else to hope for, so (we) try to believe.”
At the time of writing on October 9, there have been no further updates on Shani’s condition.
