The Indian couple Anurup Bhattacharya and Sagarika Bhattacharya moved to Norway in 2007 from India. Their first child Avigyan was born in 2008 and their daughter Aishwarya was born in 2010. Their son Avigyan developed autism-like symptoms in his early years. He was placed in a family kindergarten near the family’s home.
The family was under watch for months by the child welfare service. In May 2011, the child welfare service took away Anurup and Sagarika’s children under the pretext of bad parenting.
The Barnevarne raised objection to Sagarika hand feeding the baby and equated it to force-feeding. The child services had problems with children sleeping on the same bed as their parents which is very common in Indian households.
The Indian couple was charged with a slap by Sagarika Bhattacharya. Their children didn’t have enough room to play. The Indian couple was accused of providing unsuitable clothes and toys to their children.

After a diplomatic row between India and Norway, Norway’s authorities decided to award the custody of the children to their father’s brother by enabling him to bring them back to India.
Anurup and Sagarika’s marriage ran through troubled waters. They separated. Sagarika underwent another round of the legal battle to get custody of her children. She alleged that her husband Anurup and her in-laws accused her of being mentally unstable and unfit to take care of her two children.
Sagarika was granted custody of her two children by the court in 2013.
