Petr Cech has made an unusual call for the next step in his career.
After hanging up his goalkeeper gloves at the end of last season, former Arsenal and Chelsea stopper Petr Cech has made the surprise switch to ice hockey, taking up the goaltender position at Guildford Phoenix.
On October 13th Cech made his on-ice debut for the UK-based hockey side and pulled off a number of impressive saves including two penalty shootout saves to see his new side claim victory.
However, it wasn’t his quick reaction and puck-blocking antics that were catching the eye.
Instead, fans were drawn to Cech’s dazzling new custom helmet and it’s safe to say that it’s been dividing the fanbases of his two former London-based clubs.
Petr Cech’s ice hockey career change
Petr Cech has always been held in high regard in the football world, seen by many as the best in the business at times during his illustrious trophy-filled career.
While many players take to coaching, management or even punditry when they hang up their boots, Petr Cech has instead gone a very different route indeed.
His football boots and iconic rugby helmet have been retired in favour of some ice skates.
At the age of 37, Cech has begun a new career in ice hockey, taking up the goaltending position at Guildford Phoenix.
In his debut game, he helped his new side to victory, saving two shots in a penalty shootout and was awarded man of the match.
So while the sport may have changed, Petr Cech’s performances clearly haven’t slipped.
His custom half-and-half helmet
However, as mentioned it is not his silky skating skills that have caught the eye. Instead, it’s Cech’s new custom-designed helmet that has got sections of the Arsenal and Chelsea fanbases talking.
The helmet in question features a Union Jack-based design which features a number of iconic London landmarks around the top.
On the front, is a picture of Dominik Hasek, a legendary figure in the world of Czech ice hockey.
However, what Arsenal and Chelsea fans are most interested in are the two club logos featured on either side of the helmet.
What do Arsenal and Chelsea fans think?
To pay homage to his time at both clubs, Cech has included the logos of both London clubs on either side of his mask and fans of both clubs seem to be split over the decision.
While some feel it’s a sign of respect from the legendary goalkeeper, a number of fans are not keen on the half-and-half design and want the rival club logos removed.
Respect. Man has room in his heart for both, loving the UK flag and all the the London landmarks too that you notice when looking close
