Remember when WWE was cool?

I remember the good old days. Barely anyone had internet, reality TV wasn't around and wrestling was extremely hot. People still believed it was real back then. This was also at a time when Jerry Springer, South Park and Fox(sensational news) were super hot. Then the internet became popular, wrestling became fake, 9/11 happened, America turned super PC/PG. Benoit single handily almost killed the entire industry. And now we are left with the watered down Monday Night Cena and Thursday Night Raw-Recap.
Oh well. Maybe in another 15 years when Cena finally retires and Vince is gone....wrestling can be good again.
You pretty much nailed it on the head right there!
WWE got really lucky when they hit their boom period. I honestly think if the Monday Night Wars between WWF and WCW happened today it WOULD NOT have been quite as popular as it did in the 90s.
What happened was there wasn't nearly as many TV options for most people in the 90s. Internet was not a viable source of video content for most people so people were actually watching TV!
It just so happened that two big wrestling companies also heated up during that time and they were doing really innovative and pretty shocking things that got viewers attention.
WWF had really the first employee vs boss scenario to such an extreme degree. I mean trashing vehicles, getting handcuffed, breaking out, stealing a Zamboni or bringing a beer truck to the ring! That's just stuff you didn't see. Not to mention the era of the HARDCORE title. I know it was rough as hell on those who were in those matched but I bet you anything it drew in a lot of viewers. I know I was drawn in by it. These guys throwing each other all over the arena, into poles and fences and what ever. It was a spectacle you couldn't see anywhere else.
WCW has the revolutionary NWO. Say what you want about it but IT. WAS. COOL. It had the top star names and they had top star rivals. The Goldberg streak was unique at the time and we all know he wasn't the most technical wrestler but he was LUCKY because at that time people didn't seem to care, all they cared about was he was unbeatable. WCW also had the very entertaining cruiserweights which helped flesh out the show.
It was very much a right time, right place scenario.
Now, a lot of the problem with WWE is Vince's desire to appeal to all demographics. That is usually a recipe for disaster. He didn't do it in the Attitude Era that's for sure. I'm not really sure why he's doing it now but it does kind of seem like a kick in the gut for longtime fans.
I honestly don't think WWE will ever be cool again anywhere near how it was in the 90s. There is just too much other content available. Simple as that.
I think a real turning point for WWE might be when Cena leaves or is soon to leave because it will FORCE WWE to not have to rely on just one guy. That will be the first time in YEARS that WWE hasn't had just one guy to push to the moon.
Don't worry, it won't JUST be Roman Reigns. No, he won't replace Cena. NO ONE will. But that's a good thing.
It should mean that the Main Event is shared amongst Reigns, Ambrose, Rollins, Wyatt, Bryan, Ziggler with possibly guys like Luke Harper, Ryback or Sami Zayn, Finn Balor, Hideo Itami and Kevin Owens popping up.
But Cena gone? That's probably at LEAST 3 years away unless something crazy happens.
Until then, I advise people to treat WWE as a variety show where you know you'll only like certain parts so you just have to be comfortable with seeking out the parts you like through all the rest of the garbage.
For me that means I try not to watch Raw live unless I really have nothing else to do because it's easier to watch after and fast forward through the garbage. I read spoilers for NXT and SmackDown to see if I am interested in what's coming up. I don't watch Main Event or Superstars unless I hear something really significant about it. And I don't buy the PPVs unless a time comes where I truly like EVERY match on the card. I don't buy the Network because it sucks to watch their previous years shows and PPVs because it reminds me about what I don't like about today's show.
So I just pick and choose so I don't waste much time with WWE programming that will mostly make me mad. I just focus on the stuff I like and know that it probably won't be until Cena's out and Vince steps down until WWE might have an overall quality that is really 'cool'.
