She won the silver medal in the 2019 World Championships. Sydney also holds the under-20 world record with a time of 53.60 seconds after setting an individual junior best time of 52.75 seconds in 2018. At the 2016 New Balance National Outdoor High School Championships, Sydney won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.46 seconds, breaking Max Lada’s and junior world records in 2016.

McLaughlin began his outdoor season in April 2017 by breaking the national high school record for the 300 m hurdles in 38.90 seconds at the Arcadia Invitational. McLaughlin was awarded the Gatorade National Female Athlete of the Year 2015-16 and 2016-17. She is the first athlete in the 15-year history of this award to win it twice. When she won the award for the second time in July 2017, she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated at age 17, and the magazine called her “one of the best high school athletes ever.” After a year in Kentucky, she gave up her NCAA status to turn pro in June 2018 and in October of the same year she signed a sponsorship deal with New Balance.
