Star Wars is arguably the biggest sci-fi franchise of all time and has given audiences so much to treasure ever since George Lucas’ game-changing original blockbuster dropped in 1977. We’ve had the original trilogy, the prequels – which have been somewhat reevaluated by fans as of late – and the latest Disney trilogy.

However, there’s so much more to the galaxy far, far away than live-action efforts.

The series has a rich history in animation over on the small screen too and the franchise continues to expand with The Bad Batch.

Created by Dave Filoni, the series serves as a sequel and spin-off to The Clone Wars, a fan-favorite among many audiences.

Season 2 began premiering in January 2023 and episode 5 – titled Entombed – has given us a curious detail to discuss. Without further ado, let’s turn our lens to the colossal mech in The Bad Batch…

The Bad Batch mech machine in Entombed

Episode 5 of season 2 – titled Entombed – finds Omega and Wrecker encountering a mysterious compass while searching a junkyard for parts.

The ancient object harbors coordinates that lead them to the uncharted Kaldar Trinary. Following in the hopes of finding fortune, the titular crew flock to the system and they find themselves at Skara Nal, believed to be the resting place of a crystal known as the Heart of the Mountain.

However, when they remove the crystal it’s revealed that the surroundings of Skara Nal are not a mountain, but rather, a giant mech.

The humongous machine stirs into action and the team is tasked with taking it down before they’re all wiped out. The only way to stop it is to return the crystal. Once they do, the machine is deactivated and essentially destroyed.

Although it remains ambiguous as to who created the mech exactly, what we learn about it proves incredibly important for wider Star Wars lore.

The Bad Batch mech dates way back

We discover that the mech pre-dates the Republic and was made at least 25,000 years ago before the days of interstellar travel allowed different planets to become more connected.

Taking this into consideration, the importance of the machine is far greater than initially anticipated. Why? Because it means that an ancient civilization was capable of crafting weapons of mass destruction so advanced that they potentially rival what those in the current Star Wars timeline are capable of creating.

With the mech being pre-Galactic Republic, the introduction of it in season 2 suggests that a lost ancient civilization is being foreshadowed that we could explore further in the remainder of the season.

Depending on what we find out, this could change the Star Wars canon significantly.
