Konami and Hideo Kojima have released a brand new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
In classic Kojima fashion, the trailer is an epic and cinematic experience, coming in at just under six minutes long and featuring all in-game footage. The trailer features numerous gory moments from throughout the game and hints to a number of themes, locales and characters from previous Metal Gear games. One of the biggest highlights is seeing what looks like an early version of Metal Gear attacking what could be Big Boss. The Phantom Pain follows Big Boss as he helps a mercenary group called Diamond Dogs
The themes of the overall franchise, such as the politics of war, the cost to innocent civilians and the duties and loyalties of soldiers all come across gracefully in this very well made trailer.
But what is arguably the most interesting part is the ending. It focuses in on one child with long blonde hair, before panning over to what looks like his twin brother. Just as the twin looks at the camera, the voice over says “Les enfants terribles”, the code name for the project that would eventually lead to the creation of Solid Snake and Liquid Snake.
The Phantom Pain will feature large sandbox-like levels for players to explore
It is well known at this stage that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain will be the last game that Konami and Hideo Kojima will work on together, and that seems to come across in this trailer. It feels like the franchise will come full circle with Phantom Pain and it will hopefully be an appropriate swan song for the beloved series.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain will be released on September 1st, 2015.
