Where is The Last Of The Mohicans (1992) Filmed?

Portraying the tragic tale which took place at a time of war between the British and the French, the epic historical drama, The Last Of The Mohicans, became one of the best movies of its time. 

Created by Michael Mann, the movie is a dramatic representation of a novel that goes by the same name, which is authored by James Fenimore Cooper. Inspiration for the historical drama was also taken from the 1936 American film which was directed by George B. Sitz. After years of intense filming, the movie was finally released in the United States on September 25th, 1992. 

For all of the costumes, the producers made sure that everything they used was accurate to avoid criticism. Elsa Zamparelli was the main costume designer behind The Last Of The Mohicans. The Box office collection of this Michael Mann movie ended up being more than 143 million dollars worldwide.

Most of the film’s amazing cinematography was designed by Dante Spinotti, an award-winning cinematographer who has also worked on movies such as Hercules, Deception, Ant-Man and The Wasp, and Freak Show. Many of the scenes are supposed to take place in colonial New York, but for proper historical recreation, the filming had to be done in North Carolina.

Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina

The pathway on which British Major Duncan Heyward arrives was filmed in the Biltmore estate, which is located in Asheville. Heyward uses the brick arch to travel with his troops. The place has also been featured in movies such as Forrest Gump (1994), Hannibal (2001), and Richie Rich (1994).

Being a huge mansion, Biltmore Estate is a popular filming location for many movies, although we just see the arch over in The Last Of The Mohicans. The mansion has a total of 250 rooms, a winery as well as a beautiful pond.

Manor Inn, Charlotte Street, Asheville, North Carolina

Magua is called to the British Headquarters in Albany to be assigned his next mission, which involved accompanying the Munro sisters safely till they reach their father. The place where this happens is the Manor Inn, which is located on Charlotte Street. 

DuPont State Forest, North Carolina

The dense forest through which Magua (Wes Studi) takes Cora (Madeleine Stowe) and Alice Munro (Jodhi May) along with the troops is filmed in the DuPont State Forest. All of the forest scenes, including Chingachgook (Russell Means) traveling with Uncas (Eric Schweig) and Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), are also filmed here.

Magua betrays the British troops and launches an attack on them. The Munro sisters are saved by Chingachgook and his sons, and they then travel the rest of the path on foot through the forest.

Hooker Falls, DuPont State Forest, North Carolina

We see these falls in the movie when Magua’s men are chasing Chingachgook, Uncas, and the rest of the group, so they use canoes to quickly travel across the lake. After an unsuccessful attempt, they escape the chase by letting the canoes drop into the waterfall, while they hide in a secret cave below the waterfall.

Bridal Veil Falls, DuPont State Forest, North Carolina

Bridal Veil Falls is where the group, which includes Chingachgook, Uncas, Hawkeye, Heyward, Alice, and Cora takes refuge from Magua’s troops. They hide in a cave that’s hidden by the waterfall but are discovered and the sisters are taken, hostage.

Although the waterfalls are real, they don’t have a cave behind them, just a small space to stand. The cave was a set made specifically for The Last Of The Mohicans.

Chimney Rock Park, North Carolina

After Cora, Alice, and Heyward are captured by Magua’s troops, Chingachgook and the others have no choice but to run away from the place. They promise to come back at a later time to save them from execution.

Magua takes the group to his Indian village, where they decide what to do with the prisoners. This Indian village was created for the movie and is located in Chimney Rock Park, North Carolina. The main fight between Chingachgook and Magua takes place in Hickory Nut Falls, which is also located in Chimney Rock Park.

Where To Watch The Last Of The Mohicans?

Even after three decades, the movie stands as one of the most nostalgic historical movies that revolve around the British-French War. At present, the movie can be streamed on Netflix, Prime Video, or Stan (Australia).
