On September 3, Jacob Wetterling’s family announced that the bones were Jacob’s, and local law enforcement said that the identity of the bones was confirmed by dental records.

The location was revealed by Danny Heinrich, a longtime person of interest in the kidnapping of another boy, 12-year-old Jared Shearle, in the nearby town of Cold Spring. On September 6, 2016, Heinrich confessed to the kidnapping and murder of Wetterling, as well as the kidnapping and s*xual assault of Scheierl.
