A Texas college cheer camp kicked out a transgender cheerleader who was accused of attacking a 17-year-old teammate who called her a “man with a penis.”
Last week, 25-year-old Averie Chanel Medlock was kicked out of the Ranger College cheerleading camp and even given a ticket for criminal assault by physical contact. She said that Karleigh, who was only known by her first name, Medlock, choked her after she made rude and transphobic comments.
The alleged victim and some other girls said they had to lock themselves in a locker room to hide from an angry Medlock. Medlock thinks that she was picked on because of her race and her gender. She was taken off campus after police and Karleigh’s father, Mike Jones, got there.
Medlock posted a video in which she and her teammates can be heard yelling at each other. She said that the video shows that she wasn’t violent during the fight. Jones, on the other hand, said that the video doesn’t tell the whole truth. Now, he wants the police response footage from security cameras and body cameras to be made public.
In the video, Medlock can be heard saying, “If anyone has a problem, they should come talk to me about it like an adult.” Then she says that she “barely touched Karleigh” and was “just kidding.” But this statement goes against what Medlock said on Facebook, which was that there was no physical contact. Medlock can hear women on the other side of the door saying, “You’re a man” and “You have a penis.” A friend of Medlock who was standing outside can be heard telling the girls that they had “crossed a line.” Medlock said, “There’s no trouble between me and you, I’m sorry to upset you,” and that was the end of the conversation.
What is Averie Chanel Medlock?
On her Facebook page, Medlock says that she went to Mart High School and got degrees in BS, Kinesiology, and Psychology from Ranger College. She posted a video of the fight and wrote, “This video is proof that I didn’t attack her. There were other people around, and you can hear me knocking on the door and her calling me a man and saying I have a penis. You can also hear me sincerely apologizing. Her father is saying that I choked her and knocked her out, but I couldn’t even get into the room to touch her, so Mr. Mike Jones, please get your facts straight!”
Jones’s account of what happened was very different. He wrote on Facebook that his daughter called him at 1 a.m. after hiding in a room to get away from Medlock. “I ask you what you would have done if your daughter called you at 1 a.m. to say that she and other girls had locked themselves in a room after someone said, “You want to fight?” and then put their hands around my daughter’s neck,” he wrote.
The Daily Mail says that Ranger College said in a statement, “Ranger College takes all of these kinds of claims seriously and is committed to giving students a place to learn where they won’t be treated unfairly. At the moment, Ranger College is following all Title IX rules and Board policies that apply.”
