“Take Care of Maya,” a Netflix documentary released on June 19, 2023, that follows the events surrounding Maya Kowalski, her parents Beata and Jack, as well as the painful aftermath. Maya, who was only nine years old at the time, experienced a range of symptoms including breathing problems, body aches, coma, bodily harm, headaches, blurred vision and difficulty walking. Despite going to the doctor many times, the family still struggled to find the answer. Beata, a determined mother and nurse, has made it her mission to find the cause of Maya’s suffering. Finally, a doctor seemed to have insight into Maya’s condition and a potential treatment plan.

However, in 2016, the family’s life turned upside down when Maya was urgently hospitalized. The event marked an important turning point in their lives, as depicted in the Netflix documentary “Take Care of Maya”.

The documentary focuses on the story of Maya and her mother, Beata, who play an important role in taking care of her daughter. Beata, a Polish immigrant who worked hard to become a nurse after arriving in the US, has been deeply involved in the management of Maya complex regional pain syndrome. Maya needs a daily dose of ketamine to ease her symptoms, including widespread pain and asthma. However, in 2016, Maya suffered a recurrence of severe stomach pain, which forced her to be hospitalized at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

At the hospital, doctors expressed concern about the levels of ketamine in Maya’s system, calling her “ketamine girl” in text messages. They wanted to stop the treatment, but Beata insisted on continuing the treatment, which raised suspicions. Beata’s assertive behavior, coupled with the doctors’ concerns, prompted the involvement of a social worker, who eventually accused Beata of having “mental problems”.

Sally Smith, a pediatrician sent to assess the case, diagnosed Beata with Munchausen through an agent, suggesting that she had intentionally made Maya sick. As a result, Maya was placed under state arrest and her contact with her parents was severely limited.

Tragically, just three months after being charged, Beata committed suicide in January 2017, with devastating consequences.

The documentary explores the profound impact these events had on Maya, her family, and all who witnessed their stories, raising questions and sparking outrage.

Why did Beata Kowalski commit suicide?

On October 7, 2016, Maya was taken to the emergency room of Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, due to severe abdominal pain caused by progressive complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Both the girl’s father and mother did their best to explain the complex nature of her condition to the pediatric staff directly. However, Beata stressed that her 10-year-old daughter was injected with high doses of ketamine, which worries experts because ketamine is primarily an anesthetic.

Due to these concerns, a staff member contacted social services and a Child Abuse Investigator was involved in the incident. The investigator conducted brief interviews and, within days, charged Beata with aggravated abuse, indicating that she had Munchausen-induced Proxy Syndrome (MSP). This disorder involves caregivers fabricating or causing symptoms to make their ward appear ill. However, a follow-up psychological assessment conducted the following week proved that Beata did not fabricate Maya’s condition.

Despite this assessment, a district court ordered Maya to remain hospitalized under state supervision to explore alternative treatments and separate her from her parents. Initially, neither Beata nor Jack were granted visitation rights. In the end, Jack is allowed to see his daughter, but Beata can only talk to her on the phone. The situation was dire for Beata, and her anguish increased when a judge denied her permission to hug her ailing 10-year-old daughter after 87 days of separation.

After she committed suicide, an email drafted by Beata was discovered, in which she expressed her love for Maya and her despair at being separated from her. She could no longer bear the pain of being away from her daughter, being treated like a criminal, watching her daughter suffer and decline.
