Will there be a Love and Monsters 2? How the Netflix film sets up a sequel

Film fans have been left asking ‘Will there be a Love and Monsters 2’ after the ending of the Netflix monster movie leaves room for a sequel.

After first arriving on screens in the US last October, Love and Monsters has finally made its way onto international Netflix in April 2021.

Thanks to its arrival on the global streaming platform, Love and Monsters has generated a huge amount of interest.

As a result, fans who have watched the movie have been left asking if there’ll be a Love and Monsters 2 after the first film’s ending leaves the door open for a sequel.

Love and Monsters on Netflix

Love and Monsters arrived on Netflix internationally on April 14th, 2021 after the film made its debut in the US last October.

The film is set seven years after the destruction of a meteor cause cold-blooded animals to mutate into giant deadly monsters, forcing any surviving humans to live in underground bunkers.

Prior to being separated during the monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien) had promised to come and find his then-girlfriend Aimee, and after a giant ant-attack on his colony, Joel finally sets off on a dangerous quest to reunite with her.

Will there be a Love and Monsters 2?

• It has not yet been announced if there will be a Love and Monsters 2.

That hardly comes as much of a surprise as the film has only just been released on Netflix outside of the US.

If the Oscar-nominated film proves popular enough, due to its open-ended conclusion, there’s no reason why we couldn’t return to the world of the monsterpocalypse and reunite with Joel, Aimee and the most important character of them all, Boy the dog.

How Love and Monsters’ ending sets up a sequel

During Joel’s quest to find Aimee, he comes across two other survivors wandering the wilderness, Clyde and Minnow.

The pair are heading to the mountains where the cold and harsh terrain should keep them safe from most of the monsters.

Joel eventually parts ways with the duo as he continues his search for Aimee and, of course, he manages to find her – although it’s Aimee who rescues Joel from a near-fatal encounter.

Once reunited, their relationship doesn’t quite fall into place – it has been seven years after all – but Aimee is pleased to see Joel and introduces him to her colony.

Following the film’s final confrontation, which sees a survivor named Cap attempting to steal the colony’s supplies, Joel and Aimee agree to move to the mountains with their respective colonies.

The film ends with Joel putting out a radio message, telling people to make their way to the mountains so that humanity is no longer forced to live underground.

So, while the first film saw Joel look to reunite with Aimee, a sequel could potentially see Joel attempting to bring humanity back together again.

Love and Monsters is available to stream on Netflix outside of the US after releasing on April 14th, 2021.
