The heist genre has been a popular fixture in the world of movies for decades with classics ranging from The Italian Job to Ocean’s Eleven.
One of the newest arrivals in the heist genre is The Vault which hit screens earlier in 2021 before landing on US Netflix on July 31st.
Since then, the film has earned a spot on Netflix’s Top 10 trending list and its open-ended conclusion has left fans asking if The Vault 2 will ever see the light of day.
The Vault: Release date and plot
After first hitting screens earlier in 2021, The Vault (also known as Way Down in some regions) arrived on Netflix in the US on July 31st.
Starring Freddie Highmore, Famke Janssen and Liam Cunnigham, The Vault tells the globe-trotting story of a young genius and budding engineer, Thom, who is hired to break into the apparently impenetrable vault that lies beneath the Bank of Spain.
Set during the 2010 World Cup, Thom has been hired by a man named Walter who is attempting to recover the lost treasure of legendary sailor Sir Francis Drake and must steal three coins from the Bank of Spain’s vault that hold the secret to the treasure’s hidden location.
Will there be a sequel to The Vault?
- A sequel to The Vault has not been announced but the film’s ending definitely leaves room for more.
At the time of writing, the production team has yet to publically announce plans for a sequel to The Vault.
That comes as little surprise as the film has only just arrived on Netflix while the film has yet to be released in several countries around the world.
However, while The Vault 2’s future remains up in the air, the final moments of the first film are hugely open-ended with plenty of story threads to pursue if a sequel was to be greenlit.
How The Vault 2 could work
In The Vault, Thom and the heist crew are searching for the lost treasure of Sir Francis Drake but by the end of the film, they only know its location and have yet to acquire it.
The most obvious angle for a sequel would see the crew attempting to go after Drake’s treasure itself, rather than finding its location.
At the end of The Vault, we see the beginnings of a heist being planned out in London during the 2012 Olympics but we never see what happens beyond that, leaving the perfect set-up for a sequel.
After Walter gave his longtime friend and rival, Margaret (Famke Janssen), the slip at the end of the first film, she could be out for revenge, potentially pitting a second heist crew against Walter’s in the efforts to recover the treasure.
Having two competing crews would be mirrored nicely by having the greatest sporting competition in the world also taking place at the same time in the Olympics.
Of course, a sequel could also potentially see a time jump, moving past the London Olympics but there are plenty of huge sporting events after 2012 that could work as the perfect cover for another daring heist.
The Vault is available to stream now on Netflix in the US after arriving on the streaming service on July 31st, 2021.
