TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET as Willy Wonka tipping his hat in Wonka
Warner Bros. Pictures

Wonka UK and USA release date

Wonka premieres in the UK exclusively in cinemas on Friday, December 8th 2023 and later in the USA on Friday, December 15th 2023.

The prequel film is directed by Paul King (Paddington) and stars Timothée Chalamet as the titular Willy Wonka. As a young man, he works in a small shop selling sweets and has big dreams about crafting the greatest chocolate the world has ever seen.

We chronicle his small beginnings, amazing inventions, and of course, how he first crosses paths with an Oompa-Loompa named Lofty, played by Hugh Grant.

Along with a supporting cast of Matt Lucas, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key, and more, Wonka is a mouthwatering cinematic feast that you’ll want to unwrap again and again, so why not start on the big screen?

“To work on something that will have an uncynical young audience, that was just a big joy,” Timothée began telling Vogue in an interview. “That’s why I was drawn to it. In a time and climate of intense political rhetoric, when there’s so much bad news all the time, this is hopefully going to be a piece of chocolate.”

Does Wonka have a post-credit scene?

Once the Wonka credits begin to roll, a montage comes courtesy of Lofty the Oompa-Loompa performing another musical number that hearkens back to the original classic.

Although the credits sequence doesn’t serve to directly set up a sequel like Marvel movies do, the little bit of extra time in this bright and colorful world fills in the blanks and tells the audience what happens to the characters after the events of the movie.

With that in mind, you definitely won’t want to miss it, instead staying seated to find out what happens to Wonka and the other valued members of the chocolate-maker’s team. Once the montage ends and the regular credits begin to roll, there’s no extra scene right at the very end, so you’re safe to head for the door and sing the film’s praises.

The movie has been critically acclaimed, earning it a particularly high Rotten Tomatoes score. However, a sequel hasn’t been officially greenlit yet

Wonka age rating and runtime

Wonka has been given a PG age rating in both the USA and UK, rated for some violence, mild language and thematic elements.

It’s fun for the whole family, and in the age of three-hour blockbusters, Wonka has a more palatable runtime of 116 minutes, equating to 1 hour and 56 minutes.

With a budget of $125 million, an all-star cast, and a deeply adored source material behind it, Wonka is the must-see movie of December—an early Christmas gift.

Wonka opens in UK cinemas on Friday, December 8th 2023 and US theaters on Friday, December 15th 2023.
